Dec 13, 2010Is there an easy way to make Notepad my default editor? Some how Wordpad is default. I read where I could go into the registry and change it there but I am not comfortable with tapering with the registry. With XP, I could change it very easily.As a side note, presently in Windows 7, when I save text in Wordpad, I normally chose a simple, plain text 'save as' only but it saves my work in the fanciest rich text format with full headers? Have saved tries in the other Wordpad choices but I always get the fanciest text format. I bring up simple Notepad and save my work. However, when I call it up again, it is in the fancy rich text Wordpad format? I would just as soon save my simple notes in Notepad.

Aug 22, 2011How can I fix the Notepad function on Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit so that you get an automatic carriage return when you reach the right hand end of the page? This new version doesn't seem to have any, and just carries on writing right off towards the right into infinity. This makes copy harder to read as you have to keep scrolling along to the right as you're reading and if you have to edit what you've written you just end up with a mess. If you make the carriage return yourself it still doesn't work out right and you end up with twice as much editing. The old XP version of Notepad automatically made a carriage return at the right end of the page and was simple and straightforward to use.

Nov 25, 2012I've been having a few issues recently with some programs with reside within the system32 folder, as said in the title paint, notepad and calculator. Explorer is having a different issue so I'll discuss it later. The 3 programs listed are constantly crashing. Notepad and calculator are having significantly bigger issues than paint right now, however they all have the same issue. Whenever I open one of these programs, it'll either be a few letter (numbers for calculator) and it'll crash, with the generic error message "xxxx has stopped working, Windows is searching for a solution". This problem happens consistently. Explorer on the other hand, is behaving oddly. Every couple days (sometimes multiple times in a day) my toolbar will not pop itself back up (I have it set to autohide). While the trace of the hidden toolbar is visible, no moving of the mouse (even when on the desktop to avoid 'always on top' programs taking priority) on the toolbar will bring it back up. This usually results in just killing explorer.exe and re-running it.

Feb 3, 2012I'm using Windows 7 64bit Professional. It's configured for English and the System Local for non-Unicode is English (RP Philippines).I've been able to copy and past Chinese characters from Word --> Notepad -->Chrome/Firefox/IE for work (I was localizing a website) with no problems until last night. Today, when I tried to copy-paste a few chinese characters from Word, I was suddenly only seeing square boxes. I know this means that the font or app can't recognize or render the characters. My questions is WHY? and how to Fix it? It frustrates me since it was fine yesterday. I haven't installed anything new or changed any setting that I know of. Other applications still render the characters just fine. In fact, if I copy-paste a Chinese character from word to notepad (making a square), then copy the square from Notepad to Chrome, I get the Chinese character back rendered perfectly.
The only change would be a windows update KB915597 that automatically installed last night. To add insult to injury, whenever I go to Windows Update to look at my optional updates and try to search for the Chinese (simplified) LIP, it's not displayed! Even when I click "restore hidden updates". I've even tried the Windows Update Reset regkey, which deleted my Windows Update history, but the LIP's are still not there.

Nov 22, 2011why I wouldn't be able to save a .txt or an 'all files' document in Notepad? I don't get any errors or anything, just no response when I hit the 'save' button. I'm running a Dell Inspiron laptop, about seven months old and have all the latest service packs and such.

Copying Symbols From Charmap To Notepad
Jun 6, 2012I am trying to copy some symbols from "Wingdings" font using chamap. When I paste the symbols in notepad (I changed font to Wingdings for notepad) I see unknown rectangular characters. I selected this font from charmap and when I pasted this in note pad I got this:I don't know where I am doing mistake. As suggested, I made all fonts visible in C:windowsfonts folder.
