Cannot See XP Machine In Windows 7 - Firewalls Turned Off
Jun 25, 2009
No matter what I try I can see my Windows 7 machine in XP but can not even SEE my xp machine in Windows 7. I have the network Computer names the same on both computers "Workgroup". I have All firewalls completely turned off. I have all network sharing settings in the sharing center set correctly. The windows 7 machine just is not finding the computer. I am using a wireless network. I have a shared folder on the XP machine. I have ran the Network setup wizard on the XP machine that did absolutely nothing for it. I am able to see my XP machine from other XP machines with no problems and access the shared folder. I have figured out that it WILL get access to my shared folder in Windows 7 IF I manually type the IP number of the XP machine in the network explorer. It's just like Windows 7 is not able to read the name of my XP machine.
well I had bad experiences with firewalls, I use to have zonealarm free version , but got tiered of it because of all the configuration that needs to be done, and I heard how many of the firewall solutions caused problems to applications even if you add the required exceptions, so I just stick with my anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and try to becarefull who I connect to. I usually have windows firewall disabled too.
So far I have no problems, why do I want to run a firewall? I assume because to protect your computer from being hacked right? or someone trying to ping you to death ( Denial of service attack ) , as a normal user at home I don't feel at risk, or should I?
i recently got an update from microsoft on win 7, and immediately after it had finished updating i had no sound in any application (aim, skype, chrome, firefox, Internet, etc.). this has happened before, and i ran microsoft's sound problems wizard and it always said that an option had been clicked off and that it had restored it.this time when i ran the wizard it says it detects no problems. i am sure it is the software, as it happens a lot with ms updates. will downloadi can't go back to a previous configuration, i don't have one to go to
i have Lan, all computers are windows 7 proffisional and one machine is windows 2003 , workgroup . i made shared folder in windows2003 , some computers can access the shared folder and others can not.when i open network , i see the 2003 computer, when i try to access it , it asked for user name and password. the user is administrator for all , when i enter the user and password from many computers in the lan it is work correctly but in one machine with the same settings its says , you have no permession to access this computer.
I have de-commissioned an older machine that I had installed W7 on, I wish to install the W7 from this machine to another, is this possible -if so how?I think I have read somewhere, that once W7 is installed on a machine - it can NEVER be used on any other machine, is this correct?
I replaced an XP machine with a Win7 machine. When I VPN into our 10 network I can't get to any 192.168 addresses. The XP machine works fine only the Win7 doesn't. I looked at a lot of settings but I can't find anything out of sorts.
ive got 2 computers hooked up to a router by Ethernet sharing an internet connection, the internet connection works fine for both computers. i would like to share documents also between the computers
-one is a windows xp 32 -one is a windows 7 64
ive set up many networks in the past with a bunch of xp machines without any trouble but now i am having trouble my first step was on the windows 7 machine, i went to control panel -> network and sharing center -> setup a connection or network -> set up a new network this is where i believe i am making a mistake of some kind, it seems that the windows 7 machine is assuming that i want to set up the network wirelessly, when it is connected to the router via Ethernet. it simply brings me to a screen that says choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure, and hangs there with a greyed out next button everything seems to be going fine on the xp machine, i created a new network called "share bear", told it that the computer connects through a residential gateway, enabled file and printer sharing, rebooted the machine, and confirmed that there was a new folder in the network places for shared documents..i went back to the windows 7 machine where it was still hanging, rebooted it, looked for the new network in network and sharing center and it wasn't there, i tried again to "set up a new network" on the windows 7 machine with the same hanging screen
I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine. Permissions on the XP that is hosting the database is set to allow everyone. And all the XP machines can access it at the same time.
I have Windows Seven 7600 and i'm trying to share files with a XP SP2 machine!
Problems:
-XP machine can see Seven machine but can't access shared folders!
-Seven machine can see XP machine but when i'm trying to see shared folders it gives me an error(see on screenshot)
-Network map doesn't work(see screenshot)
-Both machines have same workgroup MSHOME but when i go to homegroup it says there is no people in the homegroup!(see on screenshots)
Other info:
Before i couldn't turn network discovery on,every time i was set it to on he was going to off so I searched on this forum(great forum) and finally i was able to turn it on,maybe others have this problem so there what i did:i go to start=>run=>services.msc and i turned on(also i switched them to automatic startup) these services DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services.
well i'm try to copy files from my xp machine to my win 7 machine i can see the xp machine but i get a message that says "make sure that the xp machine allow incoming connections for file sharing" and i have done just that i think but its a no go i've just about everything.
Installing W7 using an old HDD on an old machine to install W7 on a new SSD to be used on a new machine.I'm currently using this old machine from '09 and its performance levels have died down a lot. I bought all the components to build a new machine except I didn't want to spend extra money on another HDD to install the OS on my new 180GB Intel SSD. So basically, I want to use the HDD from my old computer, install W7 onto the SSD, then transfer the drive to my new computer, and use it on the machine and just reinstall all my other files.

I have a small three PC home network. Two PC are running Windows 7 and one running Vista.
All three machines have the same homegroup settings. The ability to view machines on the network is very patchy. One machine can see the others, while another machine can only see one other machine. Sometimes machines cannot see any others on the network.
All machines are connected wirelessly with strong signals through a BT 2700HGV Business Hub router. All of the machines can access the Internet without problems.
All machines run Eset Smart Security with the Windows firewall is turned off.
Any advice to create a stable network would be appreciated.
I have windows 7 32 bit. I turned it off forcefully and now it wont start. And I don't have any backup cds or dvds. Is there a way to fix it? Or can I just download windows xp and use that? I am in safe mode btw.
I have a Dell laptop Vostro 3350. It has been working fine for 2 yearsIn the middle of a windows update, the laptop was turned off. When started again, it had errors on update and stopped. Rebooted a few times but it always failed at the same point.Tried rebooting and using the system restore and repair options. It did get past the initial error point, but failed again further on.Now it doesn't boot at all, I get the error of needing to plug in a bootable device.
I connect to a remote machine C from Machine B which is connected from Machine A, How can I send ctrl+alt+end to remote machine C ? I cannot access m/c C from m/c A, I need to go through B to access C.
m/c A --> Remote destktop to m/c B --> remote desktop con m/c C.
Is there a way in Windows 7 to track when a computer is turned on and off? A log for the week would be great but I want to see each weekday when the computer is turned on and when it is turned off?
I was in the middle of playing skyrim when the screen went black, and came up with a message "not support" which only happens when the computer goes to sleep. I rebooted and the screen turned green and fuzzy, when trying to start windows normally, right after the windows boot logo (which can't be recognized but the text can) the screen goes black and doesn't go any further. My b/f thought it *might* be just the new graphics card he had installed 3 days ago, so I removed it. No change.
I tried to start up in safe mode (loaded completely to the desktop), and that worked but everything is still green and fuzzy. After about 2 minutes in safe mode, the screen will cut to black for a few seconds, come back to the desktop, back and forth. My next thought was heat, everything is running perfect and nothing is hot. This computer was upgraded last week; Windows 7 Ultimate, the ram, motherboard, and graphics card are brand new. Processor is a year old, and the power supply is roughly 2 years.
All hardware specifications that I know are on my profile. All parts were bought from newegg. There is no POST coding (beeps) so there doesn't seem to be loading problems. Maybe CPU problems? But I would figure it wouldn't start at all on safe mode, if the processor was out, or can it slowly go out? I've never came across a problem like this, there have been times the green fuzzy screen would happen at the very beginning of starting up, but would clear up within 2 seconds. I've already been looking at new processors if that's the problem.
I am running Win 7 on a Dell Inspiron 1525, and have noticed recently that the Security Center Service is not running, when I click the button to turn it on, I get a 'Cannot be started' message.
I may be the only one on earth that does not like windows search [in 7] as it fires off at the first keystroke, wasting time/energy afaik. Is there a way to turn it off so that I can get my proper search string entered, then hit the key??
I had a Mac laptop that MB crashed. I had a 3rd party turn the HD into an external drive for me so that I could access the data from it. However, when trying to hook it up to my Windows 7 pc, it is not showing in Win Explorer. After reading a few posts, a lot of people are recommending reformatting or other options that I'm afraid will destroy the data. The drive is shown in my Disk Management window as "Basic", "Healthy" and "Online", just no Drive letter?
I just restarted my PC and i kept getting erros regarding hardware, at first it would just hold at updating dmi pool , after i reset the bios to fail safe defaults it would then give me the I/O error. I noticed my external drive was turned off and I turned it on and windows booted fine. Is there a connection here i can disable?
Windows is installed on my SSD drive not my external.
When I turn off my laptop there is a message that tells "a programme is still running, do you want to have a forced shut down?" But there aren't any programmes running in start task manager.
I am on Windows 7 x64. Today I turned my computer on and it stopped at the "Windows Error Recovery". From the 2 options given I chose "Start Windows Normally". After pressing Enter it will not go beyond the black screen where it says "Starting Windows" and immediately reboots to the "Windows Error Recovery" again. I then chose the other option which is "Launch Startup Repair", entered the Disk, wait for it to load system files but it reboots to the Disk loading the files again like an eternal loop. Tried the F8 Advance booting options, chose "boot in safe mode with command prompt", it starts loading but then it reboots itself again!!
My system specs are these: >XFX Nforce 750i SLI >Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2666 MHz >3x2gb Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5 DIMM DDR2 PC2-6400U DDR2-800 (5-5-5-18 3-22-6-3) >ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series >WD Caviar Blue 500gb
I'm having problems with windows starting upon my PC, however, it only occurs intermittently, but seems more frequent now. When booting, the windows spiral begins then stops, and it reboots to the screen to choose startup repair or start windows normally. If I do startup repair, it doesn't find anything to repair, and reboot usually works fine. If I choose Start Windows Normally, 75% of the time if works fine. When the computer runs, it's fine and everything seems to run normally, I don't get blue screens or other issues. I'm not sure where to find any recorded errors to get more specifics.
