My HD on the Win7 laptop would not read (later diagnosed as CRC errors, etc, etc), so, I attached it to my MacBook and managed to get all the photos off it. They came across as .jpg OK, but when I put them to a Win 7 OS they will not open.
After a hard drive crash and rebuild, I restored my picture files from a backup image (WIN 7 backup/restore). But now the system saying that the .jpg files are invalid, no matter what program I have them open with.
This problem also started today on my system with 64 bit windows. The problem occurs when adding tags or other editing jpg file types in all the graphic programs i have on my machine. The problem only started today and has not been a problem in the last 3 years i have been using windows 7 including betas.
The files attributes are being changed by the operating system during system saves to being a hidden file type when it appears native windows 7 system calls are made, it isn't happening during inital file saves from my camera or scanner. Yes the files are viewable in win exploerer when the show hidden files is check in file and search options and files can be changed back to being standard files by manually changing the attributes but this shouldn't be happening at all. JPG files are not a reserved system file type that are typically hidden my windows to prevent them from being deleted by ignorant system users.
I have downloaded photos from my cellphone that are listed as being JPEG files and I am not able to open them with any windows software I have. Windows Photo Viewer gives an error message saying the pic files cannot be opened because the software "can't support the file or needs updated". Photo Gallery says the pic files "may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted" and Paint says, file is "not a valid bitmap file" or the format is not currently supported. And then lastly, my 2007 Office Picture Manager gives no error message and displays only a simple red "X" in the middle of the screen.
I did a photo recover. Some of my photos were recovered, but the ones I wanted came out corrupt. Some of them come out really weird, but most of them say "Cannot Open This Filetype" all of the photos are .jpg even the ones the are working. How do I fix this so that I can see all/most of them perfect or near perfectly.
I can't see my JPEG files in comptuer / C Drive, but I know they are there. I can open them in photoshop through file / recent. It's as if Windows is not indexing the JPEG files..
All of a sudden Snipping Tool is losing anything I try to save in jpeg format. It says it saves in the folder where I asked it to but nothing is there. When I redo the snip it tells me that file already exist. When I do a search the file shows up as being in as a Recent file used but nowhere else.
My wife has Windows 7 home premium x64 on her laptop and is using Word 2007. The problem she is having is she will open a word file, change it up, save it, then re-open it later and its the old file not the new one. Where as I can open the edited file on my desktop running the same OS but with Word 2010 and the file that opens for me is the newest version.
Im having a problem with opening files I use to open with two programs. One is mkv, vob and divx files with homecinema. And snes roms with an emulator. Basically win 7 would let me select the program and it would show up on the list of programs to use. I would select always use and I'm done. But I moved the folders containing the files to a different folder and now my two programs I use will not show up in the open with list. I now have to go to the program itself and search for the files. Its a pain because I could click on the files and get right to them.
Is it possible with Win7 to change any picture (Jpeg, png, bmp etc) into an icon file to use for a folder image?I just realised that its not an actual folder... its a shortcut which has a folder as an icon, Its actually a shortcut to a folder on another drive, but I'd still like to change it to an image I choose.
My friend has sent me all my pics from a recent trip to Thailand but when I try and open the files on windows 7 it says the files are either corrupt or not supported, my friend has a mac and I am wondering if this is the problem, I have tried extracting the files etc., with no success.
So I'm trying to fix up my brothers laptop, but this thing is a real doozy of a mess. Not sure how this happened, but somehow, the OS is no longer able to open any kind of executable other than firefox, and internet explorer. Anything else, including chrome, is on a no fly list. I can't even open the command prompt.
I tried adjusting the extension properties, and even reinstalled the extension (codec?), but nothing allows the computer to access its' exe's.
I'm pretty much convinced that since I can't access the registry (which is, I think, where the problem lies) and since the system restore is useless (it's been screwed up so long there aren't any restore points prior to the problem), I'm out of options, and simply have to wipe the HDD and do a clean reinstall, but I wanted to know if anyone out there has a different idea.
More curiosity than anything, since I have never seen a computer as screwed as this. Has anyone heard of a virus that causes this?
my pdf files do not have the adobe icon but the ie icon (e). they use to open using adobe x reader now when it asks OPEN with it does not open but returns a fastal error dde server.

Okay so I am not computer savoy at all! The other day I turned on my computer and all my files have switched to windows media player with the logo on file. Ex. Click on Internet Explorer and Windows Media player comes up. This is in all my files> Is this a bug or virus?
I have 3 machines all running Windows 7. Machine C & D are running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 and Machine A is running Win 7 Business Premium 64. To start I setup a Homegroup and joined everyone to it. I can open files on B & C via Machine A and I can open files on B via C and C via B, but when I try to open files on A via B or C, I can see the file, but when I try to access it the system freezes and does not open it.
Machine B is an older install of Windows 7. Machine B is a fairly new install. Both have very little "extra" programs on them except for anti-virus. Machine A has a new install replacing the the old install from the ground up as of yesterday of Win 7, has anti-virus that is the same variety as the others.
I have tried disabling the firewall on Machine A, did not work. I have tired disabling the anti-virus, did not work. I have even tried sharing a new folder outside the Homegroup and once again the other computer can see everything in it, they just freeze when I try to open anything. All the computers are on the same Workgroup. Machine A is running a gigabit adapter and the others are sitting at only 100/10 and are hardwired to the system.
