I cannot back up my computer on either of two external hard drives. In both cases I get an error code 0x81000031. I use windows 7, 32-bit and do not think I have Bitlocker on my machine.
View 2 RepliesA couple of weeks ago I did something stupid and lost all my data from my hard drive on my old XP computer. Having now bought a new machine and restored as many files as I can, I have purchased a Seagate Expansion 1TB external drive on which to backup my files (Once bitten, twice shy,)I'm now using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with a 500GB hard drive (not much on it at the moment) but when I tried to do my first backup today using the Windows 7 utility the backup aborted at less than half complete giving me the error message: 0x81000033 "Windows Backup skipped backing up system image because one of the critical volumes is not having enough free space. Free up some space by deleting unnecessary files and try again."I've searched on the Net and found that this is by no means an isolated problem and probably involves a partition (whatever that means) that is too small. MS want to charge a fee for assistance as my Windows 7 was purchased with the computer. All the other so called 'fixes' are so way over my head that I a) don't understand what they are talking about and b) simply don't have the confidence to try them without an idiot's step-by-step guide in front of me.I know it's a bit long winded but my question is, does anyone know of a SIMPLE way to back up my files or have I just wasted my money on an external drive that I cannot use?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an HP tx2627cl table notebook (swivel screen), Win 7 Home prem OS, 4GB ram and a Seagate ext HD (75GB free of 279GB) which will not allow me to backup. I get error message 0x8007045D because of "an i/o device error". I can copy files to that external HD (I, but can't use Windows Backup. I did a check disk of I:/ and got no errors. When I click on Backup to I:/, it starts, says it is creating a shadow copy, runs for a couple of minutes (about 5-6%) then I get the above error message. I have switched USP ports, and tried doing a backup from a "clean boot state" with the recommended settings--all to no avail.

The funny thing is, I have more than enough space. I have 120 gigs free, with an 81 gig backup.
I get a message that says " Windows skipped backing up system image because one of the critical volumes is not having enough free space. Free up some space by deleting unnecessary files and try again."I am trying to back up to a external HD with 163 GB free out of 232 GB. I have been to windows answers and they have nothing but suggestions that are way over my head. Each moderator has a different solution, it appears that MS is aware of this problem but does not have a cure. How is one supposed to create a backup and restore.

The description of the error is misleading and makes you think that you have insufficient room on your backup drive. I subsequently replaced the drive with a larger one but the problem persisted. I then researched (including here) the error code and found "solutions" that were all over the map including some frankly worthless responses. The most frequently described cause is attributed to lack of space in a 100 MB "system reserved" partition on the boot drive. When I checked my drive this partition was not present. I had an OS partition, a Recovery partition, and a 16 MB unlabeled partition. I thought that perhaps the 16 MB partition was supposed to be the 100 MB partition and, because it was too small, was causing the backup problem. I then took my computer to Data Doctors.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOk, I've been researching solutions for issues with windows 7 backup for weeks now and have had no luck. My VSS service is running fine, and everything was backing up fine til a short while ago, and has been failing since. I have been backing up to a network share on my file server.
My roommate has been having the same issue for some time now, however he was attempting to do this with an external hard drive. Same error of 0x8100019. I've tried everything I can think of and I've had no leads thus far. Any pointers on this would be helpful.
3 PC's all running Windows 7 Ultimate
1 Desktop connection via wire to router
2 Laptops connected via Wireless (Linksys wrg54g)
All 3 PC's are visible on all 3 PC's via the Homegroup in Windows Explorer. I can browse/copy/write files on all 3. All sweet. All 3 can print to the 2 Printers connected to the Desktop.
Laptop A is configured to Backup using the Windows 7 Backup to the Desktop. This works fine.
Laptop B however when trying to backup to the desktop I get an error message after I have selected the Drive in the setup screen and I've entered my username/password credentials
The error code is 0x80070043
I've tried everything and I'm quite experienced.
Both laptops for all intents and purposes are identical.
7 Ultimate on a Lenovo computer, 8 mb RAM, Q8200 CPU. Recently I started getting notifications that my backup failed because the system cannot find the file specified, and the above error code. I'm not specifying any files, and I've reset backup to its default settings, all to no avail. I'm backing up to an external USB hard drive. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to do a backup with system image since Jan 15th on an Iomega 1TB external HD. Tried about 7 times and each time the backup fails at 57%. The message I receive with each failure is as follows- "Windows backup encountered an error when accessing the remote shared file. The semaphore timeout period has expired. Details: Error code 0x81000039" I chatted with a tech from my external HD manufacturer and he finally told me that the problem was with my OS and settings. I tried doing a backup on a different external HD and still failed at 57%. I have no idea which remote shared file the program is looking for. I have a home network and one other computer. That laptop was turned on so if it was looking for a file there it was available. The tech suggested that I turn off my antivirus and firewall and if I was concerned about intrusion to disconnect from the internet. Did that and the backup still failed. I have the same setup on desktop and laptop Windows 7 SP!, Vipre antivirus and firewall, and I was able to do a backup on my laptop. Another slight problem is when I have the Iomega HD running my computer will freeze randomly. For this reason I don't keep it on all the time but just turn on for a monthly backup. I was able to do one initial backup on that HD with no problem. I was told to look at the windows backup log files but they all have a .etl extension and I do not know how to open them to see if the logs give me any idea what file it is hanging up on.

Some time after it starts doing a data transfer, I get a "the backup failed" red bar. I've read online things about having to delete hidden system partitions, but it's all fuzzy and I'm not about to start deleting things without knowing what I'm doing.
This move is necessary for me, since my existing laptop HD is beginning to fail and I need to move its contents asap. I did run a system check on my laptop and it found no errors.
I am getting a beeping sound noise from the top right corner of my vaio laptop. The problem seems to be one my hardware drivers, to make matters worse i cant even back up i just get the error code in the title! I have checked my "system reserved space" which is at 100mb so i have enough memory to back it up. I also had drivers problems with my laptop when trying to establish wifi connection after moving house, "missing driver" i now use a cable.

I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.

This in part as I lost my last Computer during an electrical storm about thirty miles away. I just want to back up about once a week.I also bought Norton Ghost. Norton Ghost seeming to be working ok. Question: why do I need it? Apparently with Windows 7 I can just transfer Data to the external disc. I have to ask this question as the instructions coming with Norton Ghost don't seem to have been written by a human being. I should like to uninstall Norton Ghost , reformat the external and start again. Is this OK?

What I am used to doing, is just dragging the folder to an ext HD for bu.Is there a way to do Incremental backups here? So if I bu on Mon to the ext HD, and make some additions on Tues and Wed, come Wed eve I don't want to have to figure out what is new. Can an incremental backup be utilized here?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Asus N55SF laptop, with Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. Also, I have 2 external hard drives. One with USB 3.0, and one USB 2.0. Following problems, I am going to describe below, happen to the both of them. Just to mention, external drives are tested on desktop computer and following problems do not happen.Let me now describe what happens when I try certain actions:
- When I try to copy large files (10 or more GB) I get an error that destination is no longer visible. External drives disappear from My Computer and I can't do safe remove. But when I copy files using programs FastCopy or TeraCopy everything copies well and drives do not disappear.
- When I try to do Windows Backup and encrypt them using BitLocker drives also disappear, and are not visible within OS.
- There is a difference between external hard with USB 3.0 port and the one with 2.0 port:
1-when one with 3.0 disappears after described actions I can't see it from Device Manager, I can see it only after windows reboot. USB 3.0 disk connects to one USB 3.0 port on laptop.
2-when one with 2.0 port disappears I can see it from Device Manager, and I only have to unplug it, and plug it in again to see it. USB 2.0 disk connects to 2 USB 2.0 ports on laptop.
Common to both disks is that when then disappear from My computer the diode on the external disk cases are still flashing, what probably means that they have some power. Both disk are formated to NTFS, and Allocation unit size is set to: Default. Their removal policy is set to: Better performance (default). On laptop I only have Windows, Office and Asus drivers. Antivirus is: MSE.

I've tried Windows 7 Backup tool but it creates an icon and I would like the folder to be able to be navigatable (for the reason that I need to know what has been backed up and what hasn't, also I don't want to restore an entire folder at times, sometimes I just want to restore a couple of files).
How can I make this happen? Using either Windows 7 backup or another tool
