Can't Get Past "Preparing Windows 7 For First Time Use"?

Nov 14, 2010

I was trying to do a clean install on a Dell Inspiron 545MT (with a samsung hd642jj drive) and initially formatted the system partition (NOT the recovery partition) and then tried to do a fresh install. Now, everything goes smoothly, all files are copied properly and everything. After all the setup goes correctly, you should technically see image 17 (please ref to link): Windows 7 Install Guide Page 4The inspiron does all the installation steps perfectly fine up until image 16, and after it says "Starting Windows" the screen goes blank and the computer just ..ort of ... stays idle and nothing goes beyond that!I've done a hardware diagnostics test and the hard drive passed all the tests, and I've tried installation with 2 different installation discs, but to no avail.

The only solution I thought of was to purchase another hard drive (and sorry, is that Samsung a SATA II or a SATA I? I don't know!) and then try installing it there.I know the Windows files are installed properly (checked with Ubuntu), but for some reason, Windows 7 will just not boot

Hangs At Screen For Preparing For First Use / Time

Dec 12, 2009

I had this pc working decently with Vista Ultimate x64, but wanted to bump it up to Windows 7 since the audio was poor and Media Center did not work well. I tried the upgrade through Windows route and this is when the issue began. The install went normally, but when i got to the screen for preparing for first use, it hung.

I have tried everything I know of, including using Active@ KillDisk to wipe the hard drive entirely. Whether I try a 32 bit or 64 bit copy of 7 Ultimate, it hangs at the same spot. I striped this machine down and have only a single DDR3 2GB memory stick in the mobo slot...

I can install Vista Ultimate x64 without issue..

Preparing To Configure Windows - Do Not Turn Off Computer

Jun 26, 2011

On my wife's new lap-top I installed a windows update. One of two. One failed, one installed. I clicked restart now and the computer started to shut down. The screen then showed "preparing to configure windows. Do not turn off your computer". After two hours I assumed there was something wrong so I tried to turn off but it wouldn't, even if I unplugged it,so I removed the battery. Now when I switch on and try to boot-up I see the same message and cannot get any further.

Windows Explorer And WAV Files - Preparing To Recycle / Discovering Items

Dec 19, 2010

A strange problem with specific .wav files. Several audio files brought into Adobe Audition 1.0. Edited and saved in two different folders. Several but not all exhibit the problem but not all. Start WE; select folder with wav files in question. The directory list field on top immediately starts with a green bar slowly expanding towards right. Next to the cursor arrow there is the "busy" rotating circle. Cannot get any properties on the wav file; however, the two docx files in same folder can be copied, properties shown and basically seem ok for use.

Noticed that the data definitions above the listing for the two error folders are:
Name...#....artist.....albums
Whereas for all other folders it is:
name......date modified.....type....size.

All other wav files in other folders appear as they should and can be processed like any other file. So it is only several of the 10 Audition 1.0 edited audio files that have created the problem. I cannot delete these files. While the green bar is expanding to the right and when it completes its extension still have the "wave" running along the bar. When I try to delete an offending file I get another window "Preparing to recycle" window with "Discovering items". "More Details" show: Name: is blank; From: is blank; Time remaining: calculating; Items remaining: calculating; Speed: calculating. I let this run for 11 minutes and it just kept "calculating".

Another "interesting" thing is after the first time I encounter this problem, close WE and then bring up WE again the left panel shows only Favorites and Library (no computer list). When the cursor is in this panel I get the rotating circle. In any other panel, only the cursor. I can "place the Library in another window" and now with two windows I get the normal favorites, library and computer in one of them. If I restart the PC I can again start WE ok and run ok if I do not select a "bad" folder. Same problem exists if I start the PC in "safe mode". How to delete the wav files causing the problem?

Shutting Down At Welcome While Preparing Desktop?

Nov 22, 2009

When doing a clean install on the Gateway machines, Windows 7 goes through the whole setup and installation process. I name my user account and computer name, pick passwords and choose how I want Windows to update. When it goes to prepare my desktop, it is about to load and is saying Welcome, then welcome changes from Welcome to shutting down, and the computer restarts. After the restart the Gateway recovery manager comes up and makes me restore my vista installation.I am not using Upgrade media, however because the installation is doing the exact same thing on only the Gateway machines, and the HP installation went fine, it leads me to believe it is a issue with the manufacturer?

Question On Preparing 2 Hard Drives For Dual Boot

Oct 20, 2009

I just have a question regarding installation of Windows 7 to dual boot with XP.

Am planning on doing a clean install on two new SATA hard drives. Will first attach one drive and partition and format it when I install XP.

Should I then go ahead and attach the second drive and partition and format it using XP before I start my installation of Windows 7?

Or, would it be better to attach the second drive and then partition and format it when I install Windows 7? Am thinking that the second approach would be better. By the way, this forum is a great resource.

I've never experienced this message before. I have not had a virus or malware be detected in a year. This came up when I tried to close KVIRC, an IRC client program and turn off my laptop via the power button. Was this a glitch or something? I'm really hoping it isn't a virus. I haven't experienced any performance issues so..I should add the laptop appeared to freeze. I powered down, rebooted, and everything seemed to run normally.UPDATE: Microsoft security essentials picked something up with a full system scan. Not sure if the 3 viruses were related.

Getting Stuck On "setup Is Preparing Computer For First Use"?

Apr 29, 2011

I'm trying to put a brand new copy of Windows 7 on my custom built PC which was running fine on Vista and XP.Completely fresh formatted hard drive. It gets as far as the "setup is preparing your computer for first use" screen and then just sits there indefinitely.I've tried repairing it after booting from Windows disc, it said no problem was found.I've unplugged and disabled everything possible, including going down to 1 stick of RAM.I've reset the mobo to default settings.I've tried starting in low resolution from the F8 menu.Nothing works, it just does the same thing every time.

Specs:

Core 2 Duo
DDR2-800 RAM
nVidia Chipset
GeForce 8800GT with 2 DVI outputs
SATA Hard drive and DVD Drive

Tried installing it on an old laptop to see if it was the disc and it installed perfectly on that first time.

Not Booting Windows Past GUI?

May 30, 2011

Tried to start up the new build after it had been working for a few days and when I am loading Windows 7 64-bit, it will stop working at the GUI screen. Here's what I've tried to do ..

1. Use startup repair (won't get past that Windows screen).

2. Tried to startup with SSD as the main drive for a working computer, got a BSOD and quick restart following GUI boot.

3. Booting from CD drive, HDD, SSD separately. Disconnected each device to see how the computer would react and nothing was working.

4. I formatted the SSD on a different computer and then tried to install windows on the SSD with no other hard disk connected. Stalls at the GUI boot screen.

Can't Get Past Through Windows Startup

Apr 18, 2012

It's a newly built computer with a fresh copy of Windows 7 64-bit. I'm running a:

-Radeon HD 7970
-i5 2500k
-2tb hdd
-asrock extreme4 gen3 p67 mobo
-16gb ddr3 ram dual channel
-1200watt psu
-nzxt phan-002 green case with all working fans

The problem I'm having is that whenever I boot up my computer, I can't make it past either the Welcome screen on the Windows login or past the actual Windows startup itself. I'll either get a black screen directly after the Welcome screen or my desktop will load, but I will find that if I click on anything, everything freezes up and I'm forced to restart. It has been intermittent at times, and I have actually had "good boots" where I could use my computer as if nothing was wrong... But that seems to be very random. This problem has been plaguing me for about 5 days now. And after much persistence, forum-browsing, and troubleshooting, I'm coming here to seek advice.

It all started when I uninstalled my ATI 12.2 video card Drivers and the ATI Catalyst Control Center. I intended to reboot my computer and install the new 12.3 drivers. The login/startup problems all started from there. I tried a multitude of things:

-restarting my computer.

-unplugging everything and plugging it back in (all the cables had worked flawlessly for over a month for moderate-heavy use per day)

-reseating my video card

-trying another video card in my computer

-in fact, an nvidia card, and had gotten the nvidia drivers (which are now totally uninstalled and swept clean with Driver Sweeper) to work, and had a couple good runs... But even then, it wasn't a for sure deal as the startups were sketchy then. and upon reinstalling the hd 7970 and new drivers, also a few good startups, but the problem persists.

-checked the bios to see if all my hardware was being detected properly

-checked for drivers for my motherboard

-checked ati's web site to make sure i got the right drivers

-used safe mode to do a LOT of troubleshooting, such as:

-scanned my computer with a complete scan with both avast and malwarebytes, and now also superantispyware. (found a few tracking cookies that were removed, but the bad startups still persist)

-ran system file checker tool and found no problems

-ran a chkdsk and came up with no errors

-uninstalled everything i installed that same day (two games)

-scanned the games setup files that i installed, thinking they were infected, came up clean.

-tried to uninstall the ATI drivers and attempt different fixes, but in safe mode, can't uninstall OR install ATI drivers, even with edits to the registry or via command prompts

-uninstalled the ATI drivers from the device manager and this seemed to help a little, but windows was still inconsistent

-used system restore to restore to a point BEFORE i uninstalled the drivers, but the problem persisted... That really threw me for a loop.

-the ONLY thing that worked, even momentarily, was when i tried Last Known Good Configuration after having installed the nvidia video card. it worked for a moment, but things were still loading slowly and wasnt standard operations. bad startups persisted soon after.

i've done lots of stuff to try to alleviate and see what the problem was... if i remember anything else i did, i'll let you know, but that's everything i can recall at this moment. for the first few days, i thought my computer instability was because of the ATI driver malfunction, which could be true... But now I'm thinking it's more because of an error lurking within either explorer.exe or the login process itself. because i could get sticky keys to pop up amidst the black screen of death earlier, and with zero input lag. got the sticky keys to pop up again when my desktop appeared on one semi-successful startup... but upon opening any folder, or clicking anything at all really, everything goes to *** and lags out till i have to restart. i want to avoid having to reinstall windows at all costs. i am not one for giving up unless ALL options are exhausted, and i feel i have yet to do that. I have a lot of information on my computer, most of my 2 tb are full of things. entertainment for the most part, but took a while collecting from various sources and dont want to have to rip them again and whatnot, as the hard copies are scattered about with friends.

Windows 7 Won't Load Past Welcome Screen

Oct 9, 2011

My mother's Toshiba laptop is less than a year old, and has been acting up lately. She doesn't download anything on it apart from windows updates, but she does have it set up to use a proxy server (through a legitimate service) so that she can watch her beloved BBC here in the U.S., which is mainly all she does on the computer. It suddenly started freezing/sticking on the blue welcome screen with the spinning circle when she tries to boot.(Sometimes it acts like it's doing something, sometimes it freezes. I left it for upwards of half on hour to see if it would finally get to the desktop, but it didn't.) I've tried starting it in safe mode with and without networking, to no avail. At one point, through logging in/waiting/closing the laptop/opening it again and such, I was able to "change user" and login, which did get me to the desktop. However, I wasn't able to do anything before it froze completely.Ctrl/Alt/Delete didn't help.

Cannot Get Past Windows 7 Startup Repair

Jul 12, 2012

So earlier on, my laptop wouldn't respond so I shut it down. When I went to turn it off again it came to a screen saying "Windows failed to start up, a recent hardware or software change might be the cause". There is two options: Start Windows Normally, or Launch Start up repair, which is recommended. When I click on Start Windows Normally, it loads for about 20 minutes then restarts itself and lands back at the windows failed to start up page. When I click on Launch Startup Repair, it says "Loading windows files" and loads for a few minutes before showing the windows loading symbol, and then it goes to a black page with a cursor pointer on it. I can move the cursor about, but no matter how long I wait, it doesn't do anything. There is no F8 option ever when I start up my laptop, even when it was working. I am using windows 7.

Windows 7 Won't Boot Past Bios?

Aug 6, 2012

In the chaos of moving to a new house yesterday, a box my friend was moving ripped and a bottle of beer smashed onto my open and powered on laptop, scattering both liquid and glass everywhere. We immediately powered down and removed the battery, and placed the laptop upside down and mopped up the excess liquid from the outside as much as possible, and set it to dry upside down on a towel. My laptop is a Lenovo U330, I had my brother install Windows 7 on it for me last year, but he kept the disks so I don't have any of them.Several hours & some blowdrying later, we attempted to start up the laptop (I would have preferred to wait longer, but I needed to know if mine would work in case I needed to borrow my friend's for the week). The laptop will load the lenovo startup screen, and then flash the windows loadings screen (with the option to press f2 or f12) for a few seconds before recommending that I run startup repair. Which if I select it, will freeze after a few seconds. Usually my laptop's pretty noisy, but while the battery light flashes as if there is activity going on, there's no noise coming from it at all.

Windows 7 Won't Get Past Login Screen

Oct 9, 2012

Windows 7 machine working fine from 20 april 2011 - 5 October 2012 I found an old cd and stuck it in the machine to see what was on it. Turns out a few scanned hi-res images and a fujiimage viewer.exe file. I thought i'd open the image viewer and see what it was. Double clicked and away we went. I moved the mouse to navigate to the start of the image viewer and the computer froze (blue circle thinking icon) I waited 5 mins and then ctrl + alt + del to get to task manager. Pulled that up - image viewer not responding - so attempted to close the program from task manager. Poof windows lost all my desktop icons and went to the loading screen background not my desk top background. I waited another 5 mins and then hit th re-start button. So comp goes back to loadup - gets to the bit where windows is loading and the flag comes up all nice and shiny. Freezes. Reset. your computer falied to load. Options to check and repair or star windows normally. Start win normally, get to flag screen. freezes. back to your comp failed to load. go to repair. wait 1+ hours. windows cant repair. reboot. your comp failed to load (im getting sick of typing it let alone looking at the bloody thing). Start win safe mode. starts gets to log on. loads desktop. looks ok. restart. gets to logon. slowly ( i mean over 5 mins to get to desktop). gets to desktop. hit Ie falis to load. firefox fails to load. desktop greys out. try to shut down. takes 2 mins to get past logging off sign. then hangs on win shutting down sign. I reset again I knew bios battery was on it's way out so I changed that, also f8 at startup and chose load from last known good configuration. over 40 mins to get to desk top. after 2 mins of trying to click on the desktop icons greys out. cant pull up task manager.
