Can't Change A Document While Previewing In Windows Explorer
Aug 29, 2010
Whenever a PDF document is selected in Windows Explorer, the document is being Previewed, I am unable to make specific changes to that document when I open it in either Acrobat Pro or Foxit.
The specific changes include: note annotations, adding lines, objects, text boxes, call out boxes, images.
For some reason, highlighting doesn't produce the same error (weird?) Preview seems to be stealing the permissions to save a file because i guess it is accessing the file too.
The error is: Quote: The document could not be saved. The file may be read-only, or opened by another user, save the document with a different name or in a
different folder The solution is to de-select the document from Explorer and then save the file. However, this is extremely irritating. I select the document in Explorer before I open it, so of course the file is still selected! In order to get around this, I have to manually de-select any file that I want to save, OR turn off Preview.
Any workaround for this so that Preview doesn't take over when I want to make changes to a file?
I recently have moved some of my users documents to a newer server from our old server. This caused no real issues and was quite easy to manage. After the move on one particular system, I updated the document library to make sure it was pointing to the new location on the new server, made the files available offline, and let it synchronize. After the synchronization was complete, there were no issues. However, when they try to attach a file to either an email or to a web form through Internet Explorer, the document library from the 'Attach a file' window is still pointing to the old location. When I try to point that library to the new location, it says the folder isn't indexed, although I can have the library open in a windows explorer window and show that it is indexed and in the library. Is there any way I can have the library updated in both Windows and Internet Explorer?
The system is currently running Windows 7 Professional 32Bit.It was running Internet Explorer 8 when the error first appeared, but I updated to Internet Explorer 9 and it is still not working correctly. This is the only system where it is acting like this, I have checked other identical systems that have had this file switch done as well.
How do you change what icon appears for a microsoft word document, while using windows 7. In windows XP you could go to "file type" tab in the folder option and choose what icon you wanted to appear for any file type. How do you do that in Windows 7.
If I have more than one page open in IE I can hover the mouse over the IE icon on the taskbar and see what pages are open. This no longer works. I didn't install any programs and did not change any settings. The only change I recently did was change a setting in BIOS from 32bit to 64bit (I'm using Windows 7 64bit).
I'm just wondering if there's any way I can reduce the clutter of windows on my desktop when running applications. In the good old days of RISC-OS (Remember Acorn?) I could close a directory window automatically at the same time as double-clicking on a file icon to open a document. Quite often, when I've opened a document, there's no need to go back to the directory window it came from, so there's no point still having the window open in the background. (I can use the Start Menu>Recent list to reopen the file at a later date if need be, although I'm often working with downloaded files on a once-only basis, so there's no need.)I'm familiar with the Ctrl-DoubleClick technique in Windows Explorer to keep one directory open whilst opening a sub-directory, but is there a way of achieving my aim of closing the Explorer window automatically when opening a document?
Every time I try to attach a photo or doc to an email using either Yahoo, Comcast or whatever browser, the system freezes and crashes. I called Microsoft and spent over an hour with one of their techs, and he got it to work for about a week, now it's doing it again
I saved a "dashboard" from a system that I bought. As the "save as type", I left it as "all files". When opening this later, it was not as expected. After trial and error, I discovered it should have been saved as "Web Page, complete" to get the desired page required.how to change the document already saved to "Web Page, complete". I have left it as a default setting but need to change the incorrect saving.
From a fresh start up of the computer, I can get my thumbnails to generate any where on my computer, the NAS, or the USB attached to the NAS. However, after a short period (not specific, can be 5 mins or 30 mins), the USB drive attached to the NAS will no longer generate thumbnails, however, everywhere else still does (ie local files or even NAS files).
I have multiple machines, and it happens on this machine only (brand new only 2 weeks old, fresh windows 7 installed only 2 weeks ago).
I am using Windows 7 64bit Ultimate, but so are the other 2 windows 7 machines, and they do not forget to show thumbnail previews after a little while.
- "Always show icons, never thumbnails" from folder options is UNTICKED. - tried all options from here Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Forums (with everything set to enable thumbnails)
What seems to happen is that it suddenly forgets that thumbnails are enabled, but only for that specific drive. Using the link above, it should always be the first example "EXAMPLE: Thumbnails Enabled in Windows Explorer" but when it decides to stop working it becomes "EXAMPLE: Thumbnails Disabled in Windows Explorer", however, it only effects that one specific USB device attached to my NAS.
It has to be a Windows 7 issue on this machine only, as all my other Windows 7 and XP machines always show thumbnails. As far as I know, all the Windows 7 machines have exactly the same software loaded (I re-formatted them all about 2 weeks ago when the new machine was built).
If I restart the computer all thumbnails are working again until it no longer likes me.
I have had my Windows 7-64 since it came out. Something new just started in Win Explorer. That is, the column on the far right is expanded almost all the way across to the left, covering up the file names, size, etc. I can move it back to the right, but it is there each time I open WinExpl. There is something in that column, it says: Select a file to preview. Also, I have my view set to "Details".
Downloaded 15 mp3 audio files for learning English from British Council website. 13 files show beautiful artwork on the Windows Explore and Media Player as well same with the one on the webside. Howeer 2 files shows Windows defualt image of eighth note. I can not see any information about the icon in the property of the file
I would like to make a change in the view of Windows Explorer (not IE) in Windows 7 OS. I click on View and then Choose Detail and choose Date. That changes what I see in the Contents Pane. I can see the Date of the files. But, when I change to a different folder, I have to do it all over again. How can I make this change permanent?
With my Windows 7 Pro 32bit laptop(fully updated) I have issues with copy and paste. When I copy text from a file/document and then paste it into another file/document I have one of three things happen. One it will copy the text correctly, though if I press enter to go to a new line its as if the clipboard was emptied because I cannot paste again, two it will not paste anything as if I didn't copy before, or three it will paste a screenshot of what is currently on my screen into the document. If it does copy and paste correctly then when I open a new file or folder, the clipboard will empty so I can't paste the same thing into two different documents unless both documents were open when I fist copied the text. This issue also occurs whe trying to copy/cut files and move them to a new/different directory(if the paste location is not already open then the clipboard appears to empty).
I always wanted to revert Seven back to Beta visuals, i already have the Fish wallpaper, and know apps to change the logon screen, but i discovered something that i can't figure out how to change it. That's the Explorer's sidebar on the left side which was blue back then and not silver like in the RTM.
can you change the layout for icons in explorer? in windows7 the sorting is
a a b b c c c d d
in XP it was
a b c a c d b c d
when i read file names in Windows 7 it takes min 5x more time to read them.i dont know why sb from ms do this and when, but this is s**t.can you make windows7 to sort icons like XP?
I am experiencing issues with explorer.exe (I found many reports on the web on this), not showing drives or control panel icons, or stop responding (win 7 32 bit Ult.) I set to open a separate process to explore windows and I got the chance to look for a better file manager and got Directory Opus and set it as the default file manager. (I use a Dell Precision notebook with certified hardware).
The explorer is still used for some windows, mainly control panel and device and printers. If the process stands there for a while, at some time, it will start to create issues. With a new 2nd explorer.exe is quite sure it will work. Checking the task manager I see that the 2nd explorer.exe waits for about 45 s to exit after the last windows close. The overall impact is quite reduced as I do not use explorer to browse files, but I would know if there is a place where I could set a shorter delay to close explorer.exe after the latest window closes.
I'm totally new to these forums but I wanted my pinned windows explorer shortcut on my taskbar to open Computer instead of Libraries.
So I've figured it out and wrote a application for it.
It will open anything you select from the list. (Thanks Brink for the list)
Program is attached.
It'd be nice to see some replies regarding this.
P.S App is written in C# for those who wonder...
W7ExplorerShortcut is the console application that only allows you to set it to open My Computer. 7Tweaker is the GUI application that gives you a list of options.
Is there a way to change the directory that automatically opens when opening explorer? Instead of having libraries come up I want to have my home folder.
Anyone know how to change the underlined key in the Context Menu? Say for example you right click a Folder Favorite in the Nav Pane in Explorer. There's a command that says MyCommand. If the current underlined key is 'M' and 'y' is not taken, how to change it to 'y' then?In Windows Seven and Vista there are context menu commands to open the folder favorite in the Nav Pane in a new window. But for some reason they are different. I'd like to make them both the same. That way I wouldn't have to think about it. Just right click a Folder favorite and hit the key.
Got the Windows 7 upgrade for my Alienware. Its the 64 bit upgrade, I elected the 64 bit Internet Explorer. I even swiched to FireFox. Some of my military training is done on line, which uses Adobe Flash player. I know 7 does not support Flash player. How do I change the Internet Explorer back to 32 bit, and what are the pro's and con's..
