Black Screen And Two Windows 7 To Choose To Start-up?
Jul 19, 2010
When I start up my computer I have a black screen show up.... I then have to choose between two windows 7 which are highlighted....
I can enter down and go to safe mode or other options. I do not know why this is happening on each start-up.
I think perhaps there are still two copies of the windows 7 Operating system on the computer. I had to do a reinstall and I assume one was not removed.
My wife did something on her PC (she doesn't know exactly for sure what & can't explain it completely me), and now she can't boot up her PC. She says it had something to do with changing the security settings for a program she uses a lot so it wouldn't keep asking her if she wanted to launch it, and that's when it told her to restart the PC, then it wouldn't boot up anymore. When you reboot, the screen eventually goes to a black screen saying "Windows failed to start. A software or hardware error may be the cause" or something to that effect. It offers me the option to "Launch Startup Repair" or "Start Windows Normally".If I Launch Startup Repair, nothing much happens --- it says it's adding files, then it looks like Windows is about to boot up, then it goes to a black screen for a long time & nothing happens.
If I choose Start Windows Normally, it simply reboots & eventually brings me back to the same screen again.I've tried using rebooting and selecting ESC to get to the boot menu, then installing the Win 7 installation disc & selecting the DVD drive, then I select thelanguage, then I click Repair, but it sits there forever with nothing happening.I also tried an outside boot disc I found on the web & it doesn't launch.
I have an Acer aspire 5732Z. I turn my laptop on and it shows the starting windows screen then just goes to a black screen with a cursor. I tried to do systems restore but it said that I did not have a system restore point. I cannot start in any safe mode. I have all my pictures, uni work etc., and I am terrified I've lost it all. I've only had the laptop a year.
my hp notebook has a black screen with a white curser. i have tried a recovery disc, running a system diagnostic which tells me it all passed, i have tried a hard reset, and my safe mode wont come up.
I was about to use my friends new ASUS laptop this morning, and soon the Windows update started. But after a while, the battery was out because the plug was not connected. So that I restarted. But this time normal windows 7 looked like started with comment updating something. But it took very long time and next time when I looked at it, it was just black screen. After that I shut it down and restarted. But nothing happened on the screen. I tried to press Alt+F10 at the same time, but didn't work.
My Dell laptop won't load past the windows start up screen.. then goes black sometimes with cursor, sometimes without. F8 does not work, safe mode with networking will not come up.
My friend was having problems with her computer. So I ran a few programs to check it out and clean it up.. (AVG, CCleaner, AntiMalware...) But then after running the last one and rebooting, the screen goes black once Windows starts to load. Then the mouse appears but still nothing. I tried safe mode and still nothing... Not sure what to do, but just gaining access to copy files to an external hard drive is important. I was planning to reformat anyways..
I relocated my 500gb hdd to insite. Before i had it as exernal hdd. But i get black screen when i start my pc. I get even if i remove it.in black screen here is also flashing "_". When i installed Windows 7 i didnt have it coneted witht pc. Sorry if here is some miss spells using mobile to write.
my system crashed yesterday due to gpu overheating. now it boots till windows animated logo but at the point right when welcome screen usually comes there is nothing now but a moveable mouse cursor on a completelly black background.now i have following stuff to get back to normal: two very old restore points and a recently created macrium reflect system image but no repair disc. i will be very happy, if there is a way to use the image since i know that some of you prefer macrium reflect insted of microsofts system image solution. unfurtuntelly my restauration points are way to old (april 2011).
My promblem is, I shut down my computer earlier in the afternoon yesterday. I come back and turn it on and after running a minute or two, the fans are going like crazy and screen goes black, monitor goes to sleep. I manually hold down the power button, restart and choose the option to repair. Once again, after a minute or so fans start running hard, blacked out screen, monitor goes to sleep. My husband has tried F8 and we've tried going back to a restore point. It will start and sound normal, but when the fans start to run hard we know the screen will go black.Opinions from various people I know and from websites are stating it's my ATI Radeon graphics card. We've even tested the RAM, yet within those two minutes after start up, monitor goes black and states no signal or it's sleeping. We've also tried numerous monitors, just for sake of process of elimination.
I have a samsung R700 laptop, which decided this morning to die. I had downloaded some films last night (which I have done many times with no problems previously), switched off the laptop (which rarely do - prefering instead to hibernate.) When I switched it back on this morning, windows was carrying out about a million updates. After around 10 minutes, the screen came on, and everything looked normal. I tried to open a document, but the laptop screen froze, and although the curser was there and moving, I was unable to close or open any other pages/applications. After restarting a few times and having the same thing happen, I started in safemode, restored it back to last month, and tried again. In safemode I can scan (have used 3 virus scanners which have been reccomended) but all results are clear. I can access the internet and all of my documents. Restarted the machine after an hour switched off, and when booting up in normal mode, the home screen is just black. There is a white cursor which moves, but no taskbar or icons etc. Safe mode is still functional.
I have just put 64bit 7 on my pc after having 32bit 7 on it and I have noticed after the starting windows orb goes the screen turns blank for 10 secs then tarts allot slower than it use to on 32bit and 32bit never had that problem is there a way to stop this from happening?
im having this problem on my acer 4741g laptop recently. Upon start up im having this black screen with cursor for about 10-15minutes until in boots up to normal start up display, i also observed that after the black screen in boots up very slow. This only happens when i shut down or restart my system otherwise this problem dont show up.I already did some troubleshooting including start up repair, adjusting my resolution and system recovery but still cant fix the problem.
Recently i updated my M17x R2 laptop, windows 7, ati 4870x2 graphics, 2 x 320GB hard drives, and all of a sudden little blue screen came up, all i had time to read was something about video drivers update, then computer shut down, now when i start up all i get is black screen, nothing else not even logo screen,i am certain this is not hardware problem as everything has been running perfectly, its something to do with the updates, unfotunately cd/dvd drive is broken so my only option is to do something through USB,only problem with that is i cant get into bios F2 or boot menu F12 to change boot order because screen black,so i need something on USB that will overide the bios/boot,also tried pressing F8 and nothing, but when i do start up everything sounds fine, fans, cpu, its just screen
Im having an issue with my computer. I was playing on my computer yesturday and everything was fine until this morning when i turned it on. At first, it would log into windows but everything was slow, windows security center services was off (coulnd turn it back on), i coulnd open firefox. I then started it up in safe mode and ran Avast full scan (nothing found), ccleaner, and malwarebytes (nothing found)I then tried to restart it in normal mode and now i got a black screen with a movable cursor after welcome screen.
Black Screen with cursor? When I switch my laptop on it comes up with a black screen with just the cursor in the top left, this happens before I get to any login screens etc, It's like its wanting to boot a CD but there;s no CD/DVD in the rom! Even when I have put one in, it still hasn't worked..I've looked on lots of forums but none have helped. The only thing that works is F2 that takes me to InsydeH20 Setup Utility & F12 Boot menu. But they dont help! I've tried the usual F8 for safe mode but no such luck, nothing happens, still the same black screen with cursor!
At first it started with me downloading Cataclyst Control Center to update my graphics card wich is a X-fire ATI 5000 series. There apeared a black border around my screen of around 1 inch, but wherever I chekked the resolution showed it was my native 1920x1080, while still showing the black border.I tried de-installing CCC at that point but it didn't work, I also tried a system restore, but that didn't work either. I formatted my pc to factory defaults at that point. After a month I started using the pc again, and when playing Battlefield 3 I got an error that my graphocs card was failing or something. So this time I went to the device manager and tired updating it there, but it automaticly installed CCC again and my resolution got screwed again.I found a solution from: [Solved] 4870 not displaying 1920x1080 on Acer H233H - ATI - Graphic-Displays."I just went through this myself with an Acer P235H. The problem has nothing to do with Acer, and everything to do with ATI. You see, ATI assumes that you'll use your HDMI cable to hook up to a TV. Since most TVs are configured with overscan (i.e. the edges of the broadcasted image don't appear), ATI aggressively defaults to shrinking the image by 15% when using HDMI to ensure that the entire desktop will be visible.
The solution is to install the ATI Catalyst Control Center, available from their website. There's a section called something like "desktops & displays." On the bottom of that tab will be an area with a small icon of a monitor. Right click on that and select "Configure..." One of the tabs that shows up has a slider for display scaling. Move the slider to 0%, and voila! It was for my wife's computer. I had already promised to reduce the cable clutter by having a single thin cable for both audio and video, so not getting HDMI working would have entailed a serious loss of face."So I tried looking in the CCC, but found no such option, and then went to the website to update CCC. I got the latest version, and again found no such option. I chose to do a system restore and never again try to update my drivers for the sake of having a normal screen. When the restore was finished it automaticly restarted my pc, and I got to the password screen (with normal resolution now) and typed in my password, after that I got a blackish screen with only my mouse on it, wich I could still move.I restared my pc again then and this time I didnt even get to the password screen, it just straight out went to the blackish screen with my mouse on it after the welcome screen.
I recently somehow got a nasty virus into my lappy. It was extremely weird since I just bought a new anti-virus (Norton, to be exact) and my PC became super slow. I recognized signs of viruses and I decided to wipe the PC clean. My friend gave two Windows 7 DVDs. However, even after making DVD the first boot order at BIOS it just doesn't work. My DVD rom makes really nasty sounds and it waits on a black screen for a bit and then it shows me to choose safe mode or start normally.
Basically, my PC has always read DVDs (logo on it confirms it). Also, Rom itself isn't broken, other discs like the Norton one work fine. Since the DVDs my friend gave me were DVD R- and DVD RW. Later, I got yet another disc which was DVD R+ but it STILL didn't work. My PC doesn't recognize the DVDs even normally, through My Computer. Did the viruses ruin my drivers or something? My rom always read DVDs but why make weird noises now?
Is there a way to make windows automatically choose "start windows normally" in the case of hard resets? I have a USB monitor hooked to the system and it does not turn on until Windows loads. but if I hard reset by accident or some other reason I can't see the screen that asks what you want to do, this only can be seen when vga/dvi is connected. I know there is a timer for the start normally, but wanted to know if there was a way to make windows not even have to ask and just know to start normally?
Sometimes when I turn on my computer, the screen will turn on as usual, and there is like a cursor that blinks in the top left corner of the screen, again, as usual. However, it will sometimes stop, and stay on this screen for upwards of a minute or more. The laptop sounds like it's still working, as the fan is going pretty fast and everything sounds like it's spinning, however it doesn't show anything on the screen. After around the minute duration, the screen will go black and the normal boot up process is proceeded with. From what I've read of other people, they can't even get past this screen, which is why I think my problem is slightly different, or the same, just not as severe. Does my problem also sound like it's the MBR, as indicated by other people's questions on the Internet?
If so, is there any easy way to repair it without having to use a windows 7 disc, as I have a laptop and didn't get a disc with it...
Today I tried to boot up my laptop but I am stuck at a blinking cursor on a black screen. To make matters work my keyboard doesn't work either so I can't use F2 or F12 before it boots to the black screen.
Like the title says, my computer is stuck on a black screen.I downloaded an update and was instructed to restart the computer. After restarting the computer it went to a black screen. It won't do anything past that. I've tried starting it in safe mode but always with the same result. I have no idea what to do with this short of taking it to Best Buy to have the geek squad take a look at it and frankly I don't feel like doing that.
My Toshiba laptop recently began to display a black screen upon start up. The starting windows screen appears, and then simply displays a black screen with cursor instead of login, and if I let it sit, it then restarts my whole system. However, I can force restart, and it allows me to run the computer in safe mode, and safe mode with networking support. My Mcafee Total Protection displays that my computer is at risk, but when I run a full system scan through safe mode, it produces no results. I then ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and it to yielded no results. Im thinking the best fix might be a nice baseball bat.
I have an Acer aspire 5745DG with H2O Insyde bios (if that's correct).About 2 days ago I left it hibernating. Today I started it up and after the Acer boot screen (where you can press f2 to go to boot settings), I got a black screen with two letter "Y"-s and that flashing cursor/line/underscore. Then it restarts and after the same thing happens, it freezes and it doesn't do anything.
I have tried to get windows safe mode by pressing f8 but after the letter Y-s come up it just gives off a loud beep.
recently my laptop (Toshiba Portege R830) started to freeze on the login screen almost everytime I power it up. As soon as I enter the login screen (the screen where you choose which user you want to log in with), my laptop just plain freezes: nothing works except shutting it down and restarting and praying. But sometimes it works and doesn't freeze, strangely (like right now). When I open my laptop in safe mode, it always work. There isn't any problem at all.I did a chkdsk in the console command screen (the famous cmd.exe) and also checked for any ''integrity problems'' (sfc/scannow I think it was) but it came up with nothing.I know it's vague but this is all I know. Does anyone know what might cause freezes on the login screen when you have to choose user? Personally I'd say this isn't related to hardware since the computer is like 2 or 3 months old, which there isn't much stuff on it right now too. It's also not a virus, I didn't do anything shady (yet) with this laptop.
I also have another small problem with my user folder. It's the default folder located at C:Users/(my name). It has been acting strangely since I had this computer. Sometimes when I delete one of the annoying useless folders like ''Favorites'' or ''Searches'' they don't disappear right away. I have to refresh the page to make it disappear for real, and this is troubling me because I never saw anything like that before. Usually when you delete something, it just goes away instantly. Also, I backup'ed some of the folders in the user folder on an external hard drive and sometimes when I power up my external hard drive some duplicate folders are created, which is so unbelievably annoying since when they keep coming back and I have to refresh everything to confirm I really deleted them
I have a laptop with Windows 7. I was playing games on it today and suddenly browser closed. Then everything else closed and logged out and my laptop completely shut down. When I tried to turn it on again, a blank black screen with a flashing underscore "_" comes up and none of my keys work. The F8 key does nothing. I have turned it off and on many times.
I know there is a setting to choose or not to choose specific countries, but I don't know how.(Yes, Europe is not as free as you think and you need to change your identity to view what third world countries can view!)
Got software restore. Can't start from disc. Changed boot order, nothing. f8, f10, f12,got my no where. Won't start in safe mode. I don't have the options that the instructions with the discs say I should have. Here are my options:
1. Goes to eRecovery and just sticks there with a blue spinning wheel
2. Goes to f8 menu with no option for recovery or repair. When trying to start normally it goes to a blue screen with an error message that is gone to fast to read. Restarts
3. Goes to black screen with some unreadable stuff except for the word "failure". Restarts
My son has a Toshiba Satelite P205 that he just upgraded from Windows XP Home Premium to Windows 7 32-bit. After the upgrade completed the computer booted fine. The within 20 minutes he got the BSOD and the system rebooted. Now he can't get Windows to fully start. We've tried all of the options from F8 with no success. We have the Toshiba System Recovery Disk but it won't launch. (The Boot sequence has been changed to boot from CD/DVD and then the Hard Drive.)The Memory Diagnostic from the Windows 7 disk ran fine with no errors. I'm thinking I might need to re-format/wipe the drive to start fresh but don't know where to obtain a boot CD(no floppy drive on this laptop). Does anyone recommend a software that I can purchase to clear everything without destroying the CD/DVD accessibility so I can then use the System Recovery Disk to put it back to the original factory Settings?
I have recently bought a computer and I have found that when I turn it on it runs normally until after the "Resuming Windows" screen, where everything turns off and the screen goes black. It had been running well for the last few days, so this came out of nowhere.I have searched this problem and I come up with a bunch of different solutions but no one agrees. The most common reason (apparently) is my version of Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) and I need to install something or other. But I can't even get to the desktop, and no one really explains it simply.
