Associating Cardfile Data Files With Cardfile.exe Executable
Jan 4, 2010
Copied 32-bit version of cardfile.exe to my W7 PC and voila, it runs like a champ. Problem is I can't associate my Cardfile data files with the executable using the "Open With" function.
1. Copied 32-bit executable into a directory named "Cardfile" within "Program Files (x86)".
2. Copied my Cardfile data files to My Documents and renamed *.crd to *.car due to avoid Windows CardSpace association.
3. Right clicked on one of my *.car files and selected Open With.
4. Navigated to my cardfile.exe executable, clicked Open, but Windows won't accept association and keeps trying to open with Acrobat, first "registered" app on the apps list.
I think this is happening because cardfile.exe was not actually installed and therefore not registered. This was never a problem in XP, but MS always seems to they have to increasingly protect us from ourselves and now it's an issue.Anyone know how I can register cardfile.exe with the OS so I can associate my Cardfile files with the executable and open them directly?
I have what I thought should be a relatively straightforward question: What do I type in the command prompt in Windows 7 to extract all the files from inside an .exe? I remember doing it once a long while back, but I forgot how and Google is being especially unhelpful. One result instructed me to navigate to the file's location and type:
filename.exe /A /P C:destinationfolder
but that didn't work. I assumed it was for an older Windows version. Google got its hit from a comment saying it didn't work on Windows 7...
It did this with Vista -- I now have Win7 Ultimate x64 -- as well, if I have the external drive plugged into the system, and start deleting files, somehow the recycle bin associates itself to the external drive. To get it back to the C: drive, I have to right click and open properties and then choose C: and click apply then okay, but not that long after it's back to the external drive again. So, my question is this:how do I stop it from associating itself with the external drive forevermore?
So, I've got Windows 7 Starter, and I need to associate an extension with a program. I know how to do this, but when I click on the program to add the select program box, it never shows up when I hit Ok. So I can't change open with. The Program is Pivot Stick Figure animator, and the extension is .piv. It's worked before on a previous computer.
In Default Programs, When I select 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program'. When I select an extension and click the Change Program button, the program I want is not on the list, So I select [Browse] and select the program I want then nothing happens. How do I add a program to the list ?
No matter what compiler I elect to use (I have tried codeblocks, bloodshed dev C++, visual studio c++ express 2005, visual studio 2008 & 2010 and eclipe [java]) when i attempt to rebuild a project after executing it once, it will link and compile, but and error will appear stating that the compiler could not open the executable to re-write it. I have already attempted the following:
** I have no Antivirus running (windows has a warning stating it). ** I have no firewall running (windows also has a warning about it). ** I have checked process explorer and no Antivirus or firewall is running. ** I have checked process explorer and no other process is attempting to use that executable. (the program terminates from process explorer at the same time it stops running in command prompt) ** I have followed all necessary instruction to make sure cygwin was removed from my computer.
My program will compile & run without any errors (it does this to any code i try to compile, even hello world [so it isn't a coding error]. Its may be a compiler error because it happens with c++ and java [same problem from command line too) or its an ide problem as this happens with multiple ide.
I am going to take a guess and say I either a have a rogue av or firewall (Windows Defender) issue that I can not seem to track down and shut down or windows keeps accessing the project directory (process explorer did show a process name "system" was accessing that project directory). I am the admin for the computer, and the only account on it. I really don't want to dual boot linux just to develop programs.
I can't locate the executable for paint. I typed paint in search while in C: (system drive) with no success. Instead, it could find hundreds of files matching odd criteria, like if "paint" appeared in the name of the containing folder or in the file description, which is too advanced for a basic search.
And guess what -- the file with the actual name wasn't found. I checked in Organize > Folder and search options > Search > When searching non-indexed locations > Include system directories but in vain. It happened with files created by me as well. So, 2 questions arise, as simple as they can be:
1. How can I check the options to search for a file regular/hidden/system in regular/hidden/system directories? 2. Options for input words location: name/content (not interested in others), regardless of indexations (I don't want to change location indexations for these options to work).
I have a special case where a user needs to run an installed executable as an admin. This exe was written for XP and will only work properly when ran as admin. I do not want the user to have an admin account or the admin pass, but he needs to be able to start and stop this program at will. I have tried checking the box to always run as admin, creating a desktop shortcut to run as admin and I even tried creating a shortcut that uses the command line runas /savecred but all attempts failed. Windows 7 always asks for the admin pass. I understand this is how it is supposed to be, but are there any options available to me? If I turn off UAC will that do the trick? But will turning off UAC override the GPO I have setup for non-admins?
I have a dual monitor set up in my office with a 23" Asus connected via DVI and a 19" Sony connected via VGA and adapter to my custom build. In my living room I have a TV connected Via Receiver Via adapter(composite/s-video) Via s-video to my same custom build. At the moment I have to go in to "screen resolution" and select the sony from the "Display" menu and then "disconnect this display" from the "Multiple displays" menu. So far I have only disconnected the sony monitor, I still need to extend desktop on to the TV.this gets to be a legthy process when I do it 8 times a day every day. Is there a why to have 1 or 2 executable script that will allow me to switch between the desired displays?
I have several old email data files (PST) that I no longer use and therefore have not included them in my Outlook 2010 profile. I was wondering is there anyway I can see what is in them without importing them into Outlook as I am after 1 specific email with a video attachment on it.
All the files and the data on my usb thumb drive, but it is still their, I can even copy it to a new file. All the data says it is there, but it is still invisible. I have run Norton 360, and Mal-ware bytes, no effect. I am running sys 7 pro 64 bit on a Toshiba satellite
I regularly activate Windows Mail on Win-7 for myself and my customers who are used to Outlook Express 6 and like it. I know how to migrate the address book from OE6 to Windows Mail but I can't seem to find the actual EMail folders in Win-7, Windows Mail. In OE6 they are *.dbx files and are easy to find, copy and migrate to the new PC. Now I have a friend who is running Vista with Windows Mail but he hates Vista and wants me to install Windows 7 for him. I have no problem activating Windows Mail in Win-7, but he'll want his old email folders and I don't know how and where to find them?
I have an ultra book with 128GB.I also have a 1TB NAS drive on my network. I want to go through and archive old personal data files and move the archives to the NAS drive. I don't want to totally get rid of it.I know I can just move over want I don't want to keep on my computer. But I'm hoping I can find some method of managing the archives now and in the future.
Old PC currently running on Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and new PC on Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
So far I've did a full backup via Acronis True Image 2012 (read online about it) and I'm lost on what should I do next? Do bear in mind that I'm a "noobie" in tech stuff
I've had this laptop for a few months now and I got another hard drive called Data which is empty, my other hard drive called OS is where everything goes and I wondered if I can move games and other files to my Data hard drive without corrupting them. And if possible can I move a file called Program Files to my Data hard drive without causing any problems. My pc takes a long time to restart which I guess my OS decides. My OS got is 80gb of 238GB and my Data is 332gb big, with no files in it.
Im trying to convert the hex data of some files and folders into notepad format but i dont know how to do it in the program i have Winhex. I have also learnt that this is called parsing... I have two images here of what i am trying to achieve.
Pretty much all my music files (even ones in separate folders) with images associated with it (like files to show album covers which are hidden), folders inside that weren't viewable before, volume information, temporary files, etc. Which are normally hidden have suddenly become viewable and are also regarded as system files (they are all slightly greyed out along with the hidden box in properties).
For the third time in a week, Windows 7 has replaced some of my personal data files with earlier versions, without my consent, following a restart. I'm talking about my outlook Data file (outlook.pst), my Quicken data files and a few others. Files are located in different places, but mostly in my Documents folder.
There are no errors, no crashes and no warning whatsoever. I just restart the PC and suddenly my data files are overwritten with sometimes days old versions. The first time it happened I assumed that maybe I hadn't properly saved my document(s), but then I noticed it actually WAS replacing current files with earlier versions. I would enter a few days worth of transactions into Quicken, save and even backup the files, only to have it revert back to a file that was saved two days ago after restarting the PC, causing me to have to re-enter all those transactions. Same thing with Outlook - I could add/change/remove appointments in my calendar, only to discover that it went back to an earlier time after the next restart, all changes made would be lost. Just a simple reboot is all it takes - the last time I had to reboot to update a driver. This is completely unexpected & unacceptable behavior. What would cause Windows 7 to do this?
I have searched trying to match my need to many different setups of user.I have a new laptop. shared by wife and myself. the account is set to administrator. set up user for myself so that I could have certain programs for my use only. when I try to install say Quicken it also appears in our joint account.how do I get a user account with only my programs and data files on my desktop and not on the main one we both use.
When i start downloading large data files with multiple connections (it does not matter which download manager i use - flash get, jdownloader, IDM) it starts to consume a lot of MB until it consumes all of it, but when i close the download manager only about 200 MB becomes free (before downloading started i had used only 900/2048 MB and after closing download manager, it is used ~1800 MB / 2048 MB and there is no program in task manager which would consume such a lot of memory and i can free the ram only by restarting computer. This happens to me on celan RC version and even on clean RTM version.
I have quite a fast conenction 50/50 Mbps so the RAM runs out quite fast (in 15 minutes i have no free ram).
This happens only in Windows 7 (in Vista, XP it downloads without any memory leak using the same download managers)
Does anyone have the same problem or know how to solve it?
I had some problems with my laptop and had to re-install my OS. I made a image backup of my HD with Acers's backup manager only to find it doesn't restore my data at all. (According to Acer this has become a common problem with the backup manager). I also made a copy of my HD luckily.
After spending some time on Google I discovered that the contacts, send emails and received emails were stored as an .eml file. I thought all was well and started searching through the copied data and found nothing. On top of that I discovered that the directory sections where the supposed files are stored, is not the same on the newly installed OS as it is on the copied data. For example:The copied data I searched in was under Users>username)>AppData>Local>Windows Live (or first) Microsoft>Windows Live but the new OS directory doesn't look the same. The windows Live 2011 I used before backing up was part of an update in the beginning of 2011 from MS and the one installed now I found on another site and then windows updated the rest. My OS must be the same as it's from a hidden partition on my Acer .
I have seen some XML files and don't know if this is a similar data file for WML.
So currently I have Windows Xp and Windows 7 /32bit installed. Windows XP on C Drive and Windows 7 on D.I would like to install Windows 7 /64 bit over windows XP so I can use more than 4G Ram. So I would have both 32 and 64 bit windows on the same PC. I have few questions: Can I somehow upgrade from XP to 7 without losing data and files? Will I still be able to go on the Windows 7 /32Bit?
what the executable file is (specifcally in Win 7-64bit) that brings up the "network and Sharing" section in Control Panel or, more specially, the Local Area Connection.
So I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.
