Asking For Username/password While Installing Windows 7 Home Premium?
Jan 2, 2012
I've got some driver problems so I decided to reinstall the same windows [Win 7]. While installing, The system restarted and showed up the Win 7 wallpaper asking for username and password. From what ? Also i didn't configured username/password before this. Tried the old username/pass but it says "This domain cannot be connected, blah blah blah...".

Performed system restore to factory point when I first recieved the computer. When windows starts, it states that it is rpeparing the system for first time use, however it will get to the welcome screen and prompt for a user name and passwordSystem restore never asked for a user name and password. I tried using the account information from when I setup the computer originally but it does not recognize the username. Also tried to type in administrator for the user name and it says the account has been disabledI have tried to setup user through the command prompt and through the registry using the windows recovery disk. When all this failed I contacted Dell and they said I disabled the admin account during restore (I would like to know how) and I would need the windows installation disk which were not included.

I have a reset disk. I have Windows 7 Home Premium. I lost my administrator password, only one administrator account. I cannot find any button anywhere on the Welcome screen that I can click to 'reset password'. I cannot do it from the (limited) other user on the computer. I downloaded an Appliction called resetwindowspassword-set from 'download.cnet.com' and I cannot open the download because I do not have the administrator password.

I lost my laptop in 2010 and found it a few days ago. I tried logging in but I can't remember the password. It only has one account and I don't have the password reset disk. The hint is not facilitating as I cannot remember at all. It's Windows 7 Home Premium. Is there anyway I can get into my laptop?

The institution has an arrangement with MS to download one copy of Windows Professional to each student. The school IT folks tell me I have to go into the boot menu (f2) and boot from the DVD containing the school's licensed Windows Professional copy. There is no "product key" that I can find, unless it is somewhere on the DVD embedded in another file.

My mother has a relatively new Dell notebook, but she did some rather stupid things with it. Nothing that I can't fix with enough time and effort, but I figure that reinstalling from scratch would yield a better result and probably take less time too. Besides, it's never a bad thing to reinstall Windows every few years anyway in my experience. However, here's the problem: my parents never bothered to order/make recovery disks. I do have a Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disk laying around though (upgrade disks contain the full OS, right?). However, the laptop itself came with Home Premium and as such, the activation key on it is also for HP.So, can I just pop in the Ultimate disk, yet enter the HP code and end up with a regular HP edition? I vaguely remember that entering an Ulltimate code while installing from a Home Premium disk results in a full fat Ultimate, but does it work the other way round?

I am currently planning on upgrading one of my PC's that has a genuine retail version of 64-bit Win7 Home Premium installed.
I am planning on replacing my ageing (E5200/P35/DDR2/HDD) hardware with fresh stuff (Core i3 530/H55/DDR3/SSD).
The way I understand it is that if I were to just replace my MOBO and CPU I could just plug my old hard drive into the new mobo and use the windows disc to repair any problems it may have. However, I am planning on upgrading to an SSD as well.
My question is this, if I make a bare metal backup of Win7 off my current hard drive onto the SSD using something like Clonezilla, and then boot off the SSD once my new system is built, will there be any issues that the Win7 disc won't solve? I don't want to get all this new kit just to find I need a new OS as well.
Anyway, I hope that makes sense.
EDIT: I should add that I currently have 3 hard drives but I only have my OS on my primary hard drive so backing up my music etc isn't an issue. The SSD I'm getting is 64GB so should be fine for Win7 Install.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit on my Laptop. I heard about installing Win 2008 Server(Not Windows Server 2008 R2 bcoz its 64bit and my Windows 7 is 32bit)on vhd in Windows 7.My first question is, can I install Win server 2008 on vhd in Windows 7 HP 32bit. or I need other versions of Windows 7 like professional or Ultimate. I tried installing Win Svr 2008 on vhd in Windows 7 Hp 32bit but did not work, this is what i did.Created a new fixed size/extnedable vhd in win 7, initialized and attached the vhd. Then put win server 2008 dvd and ran setup inside Windows 7, it asked me where to istall. I selected the newly created and formatted vhd drive(F). But it says load vhd HBA driver, i tired to find the driver online, in Windows 7 and win svr 2008 cd but no joy. I dont know wether, win svr 2008 can be installed on a vhd in Windows 7 Hp. I read online how to isntall win svr 2008 r2 on Windows 7 ulitimate, by pressing SHIFT+F10 at install time and then doing something in diskpart and then doing dual boot with Windows 7.i need to updgrae my win 7 to professional or ultimate to accomplish this job or there is way to do with Windows 7 HP. as vhd is just virtual, can any windows version be istalled on vhd.My main thing i need is having Windows 7 as main OS and dual boot with win svr 2008 which is on vhd.

I've got a folder shared to specific user on my Windows 7 laptop. When i try to access that folder over lan, from my Vista laptop, it doesn't ask me for user&pass, but just gives "Access denied" error message. If it's set as shared to everyone, then i can access it just fine. But i want it to be accessible only after password protection over lan. Both laptops are set to "WORKGROUP" and here are the network settings for the windows 7 one
Network Discovery: ON
File and printer sharing: ON
Public Folder Sharing: OFF
File sharing connections: Enable 40 and 56 bit encryption as well
Password protection sharing: ON
HomeGroup connections: Use user accounts and passwrods to connect to other computers

We moved our offices from one location to another over the weekend. New ISP but everything else is the same.Have a peer-to-peer network with one pc (Windows 7 Professional) acting as the file server. Everyone now has access to internet and we can all "see" each other. For some reason now when we want to connect to Public Folders on our "file server" it is asking for login credentials such as username and password. I have it set to not require a password since we have a mixed environment. It has always worked in the past and I am not sure why it would be requiring that now. I had read somewhere to try and setup an admin username and password that was the same for both computers. I tried that and it was still unsuccessful (Although I still have it set to not require a password).

The storage path for Outlook XP data files is :UsersUsernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlookOutlook.pst which does not appear to work with respect to useername and password storage.Just wondered if changing the path to:UsersUsernameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftOutlookOutlook.pst would create a situation where the outlook username and password were saved on the ISP's server.

I am trying to install Windows 7 enterprise. When it gets to the step to enter the computer name and usually at that same step you setup the username. This installation does not have that step and when I click next it finishes the install reboots and brings me to the login screen. I can log in because there is no username or password set.

I have a Win 7 laptop and xp desktop on my network. When I try to access the xp desktop from the win 7 laptop, I sometimes get a dialog box requesting username/password. Other times I get a message box that I do not have permission to access the desktop. Other times still, everything works fine. The xp can access the laptop no problem. The laptop can always see the desktop in the network, the problem is accessing it to share files or use a printer attached to the desktop.I have no passwords on either computer. I have disabled passwords in the advanced network settings for home & work. Registry has LmCompatibilityLevel set to 3 on the laptop

Using a dime a dozen, store bought preconfigured PC running Win 7, during the initial setup out of the box, when you are at the user name/ computer name screen, I initially typed in a user name, but then did a "cut", deleting that name and I just entered a password to see if it would let me do this.
To my surprise it did, advancing me to the next screen with just a password.
When I got to the actual login screen and just typed in the password, but it wouldn't let me login. I tried the original user name with the password, but that didn't work.
The solution from Comtrash was to do a restore process, effectively reloading their version of the O/S.

I successfully bought the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium N, downloaded and extracted it and now I want to install it.
When I choose UPDATE in the intallation dialog it tells me that I cannot upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium ???
Every website from Windows and other people tells me that it IS possible and even the Windows 7 Update Advisor told me that I should not encounter any problems upgrading.
Has anyone of you yet encountered upgrading problems of compatible Vista/7 versions?
Or any other idea what I can do to solve the problem?!
I know that I can make a clean intall of 7, but this would be a pain..
