View 9 Replies View RelatedThe institution has an arrangement with MS to download one copy of Windows Professional to each student. The school IT folks tell me I have to go into the boot menu (f2) and boot from the DVD containing the school's licensed Windows Professional copy. There is no "product key" that I can find, unless it is somewhere on the DVD embedded in another file.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy mother has a relatively new Dell notebook, but she did some rather stupid things with it. Nothing that I can't fix with enough time and effort, but I figure that reinstalling from scratch would yield a better result and probably take less time too. Besides, it's never a bad thing to reinstall Windows every few years anyway in my experience. However, here's the problem: my parents never bothered to order/make recovery disks. I do have a Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disk laying around though (upgrade disks contain the full OS, right?). However, the laptop itself came with Home Premium and as such, the activation key on it is also for HP.So, can I just pop in the Ultimate disk, yet enter the HP code and end up with a regular HP edition? I vaguely remember that entering an Ulltimate code while installing from a Home Premium disk results in a full fat Ultimate, but does it work the other way round?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am currently planning on upgrading one of my PC's that has a genuine retail version of 64-bit Win7 Home Premium installed.
I am planning on replacing my ageing (E5200/P35/DDR2/HDD) hardware with fresh stuff (Core i3 530/H55/DDR3/SSD).
The way I understand it is that if I were to just replace my MOBO and CPU I could just plug my old hard drive into the new mobo and use the windows disc to repair any problems it may have. However, I am planning on upgrading to an SSD as well.
My question is this, if I make a bare metal backup of Win7 off my current hard drive onto the SSD using something like Clonezilla, and then boot off the SSD once my new system is built, will there be any issues that the Win7 disc won't solve? I don't want to get all this new kit just to find I need a new OS as well.
Anyway, I hope that makes sense.
EDIT: I should add that I currently have 3 hard drives but I only have my OS on my primary hard drive so backing up my music etc isn't an issue. The SSD I'm getting is 64GB so should be fine for Win7 Install.
I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit on my Laptop. I heard about installing Win 2008 Server(Not Windows Server 2008 R2 bcoz its 64bit and my Windows 7 is 32bit)on vhd in Windows 7.My first question is, can I install Win server 2008 on vhd in Windows 7 HP 32bit. or I need other versions of Windows 7 like professional or Ultimate. I tried installing Win Svr 2008 on vhd in Windows 7 Hp 32bit but did not work, this is what i did.Created a new fixed size/extnedable vhd in win 7, initialized and attached the vhd. Then put win server 2008 dvd and ran setup inside Windows 7, it asked me where to istall. I selected the newly created and formatted vhd drive(F). But it says load vhd HBA driver, i tired to find the driver online, in Windows 7 and win svr 2008 cd but no joy. I dont know wether, win svr 2008 can be installed on a vhd in Windows 7 Hp. I read online how to isntall win svr 2008 r2 on Windows 7 ulitimate, by pressing SHIFT+F10 at install time and then doing something in diskpart and then doing dual boot with Windows 7.i need to updgrae my win 7 to professional or ultimate to accomplish this job or there is way to do with Windows 7 HP. as vhd is just virtual, can any windows version be istalled on vhd.My main thing i need is having Windows 7 as main OS and dual boot with win svr 2008 which is on vhd.

while installing 7 H.P. it gets to completing installation then freezes up after computer reboots a warning message appears stating windows 7 has failed to install and resume after reboot, and then the same warning message appears.
I tried the roll back installation option and a message flashes on and off to quickly to read.

any Ideas on what to Do?
I successfully bought the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium N, downloaded and extracted it and now I want to install it.
When I choose UPDATE in the intallation dialog it tells me that I cannot upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium ???
Every website from Windows and other people tells me that it IS possible and even the Windows 7 Update Advisor told me that I should not encounter any problems upgrading.
Has anyone of you yet encountered upgrading problems of compatible Vista/7 versions?
Or any other idea what I can do to solve the problem?!
I know that I can make a clean intall of 7, but this would be a pain..
Yesterday I was messing around on my brand-new laptop, and I was stupid enough to try a keygen to get Ultimate (I had HP). Surprising. It worked but the copy wasn't genuine obviously. So then I rebooted, pressed F8 at boot. An ran Toshibas recovery to try to get the computer to its out of box state. I got stuck at initializomg (either that or I was impaptient) so I turned off the laptop. Then when I truer to boot I got bootmgr is missing. I have an old vista Hp disk so I installed that for the time being. So my question is, how do I get it back to the original state? I do t have any important data or anything.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe original OS was Windows XP 32bit SP3. I upgraded this system to Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit SP2 with no issues.
I then went to upgrade the system to Windows 7 Premium. I chose the "Upgrade" install and not the "Clean" install. I've checked the updater to confirm that all my system information was adequate. I uninstalled the ATI Catalyst Controller, iTunes, etc. that it wanted me to. Oddly enough, the ATI Catalyst Controller was the most recent driver that supports Windows 7.
I checked online to see if the hardware was all supported by Windows 7. The Sapphire Vapor-X video card was not compatible or compatible... it simply wasn't on the list of either. The X-Fi Extreme Gamer said it was NOT compatible... yet, I had a driver for Windows 7 and the Windows 7 Application checker said that my sound card was ready for Windows 7... thus a discrepency.
I went on with the installation. I get to the last step where it resets the computer at 62% and I get a BSOD for about 1/3 of a second. It goes by too quickly for me to capture it. It then restarts the computer instantly with the result of "Upgrade was not completed successfully. Restoring prior OS yadda yadda". I've gone through this about 5 times now trying different things.. keeping the Catalyst controller installed, uninstalling the video card, removing the sound card, etc. Nothing seems to work.
It was recommended to me that I do a clean install... however, I have read that many others have done a clean install and theirs STILL doesn't get past the 62%.
Is it my hardware? Do I need to buy MORE hardware now that 7 is out that is on the compatible list?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAny prevailing issues with the latest round of windows updates? Two weeks ago our computer running Windows 7 Premium downloaded an update and received the dreaded black screen on startup. It will now no longer run windows, offer a boot menu or anything. Today our older unit running Vista Home Premium did an auto update and we now have the same issue. Sadly with the O/S and with Microsoft "stellar" customer service. I am running Norton with all the current updates and i am sure it is not a virus.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm learning about how to install Windows 7 to many computers. But after I read the tutorial, it has to use Windows AIK to do the process, which has a huge installer size (1,7 GB), not suitable for my slow Internet connection to download it.
Is there another way / alternative to install Windows to many computers (let's say 10-15 computers) at once, instead of using WAIK?
I have sort of a special case here. I purchased my HP laptop in Thailand, and much to my chagrin it came installed with Windows 7 Home Basic. In addition, the HP store which sold me the laptop installed 4gb of RAM neglecting to tell me that the 32bit version of 7 only supported up to 3. At any rate, I am hoping to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit edition. But while there is a glut of information online about how to upgrade from Starter, there is little to nothing about Home Basic. Do I have to buy a full copy of 7 Home Premium 64 Bit? Can I buy an Anytime Upgrade that is meant for Starter and apply it to my computer?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently did a complete reinstall of Windows 7 64-bit on my desktop computer and now I can't access shared drives on my wife's Windows 7 computer (home ethernet network). I was able to install and use the shared printer attached to her computer. I am able to add her shared drives to my Windows Explorer as mapped network drives, but if I click on one an error box pops up: "J: is not accessible. Access is denied."
Her computer and all of her drives show up in the Network section of Windows Explorer, but if I click on one, I get a Network Error popup saying "Windows cannot access \Wife-pcc. You do not have permission to access \Wife-pcc. Contact your network administrator to request access." I am able to control her desktop and transfer files using UltraVNC...that's actually the only way I can transfer files at the moment.
If, from her computer, I right-click her C: drive, select Properties -> Sharing, it shows the drive is shared. If I click the Advanced Sharing button, and then click the Permissions button, under "Group or user names" it shows "Everyone", and shows the permissions as Full Control, Change, and Read. What else do I need to do so that I can access her drives as Mapped Network Drives? I was able to do so prior to reinstalling Windows 7 on my computer, and nothing has changed on her computer.
Quote: Installing Windows 7 on some computers is not a simple task, especially if compatibility and support problems exist. According to Microsoft, Windows 7 fails to play nice with machines that have an AMD/ATI Radeon graphics processing unit (GPU) leveraging the embedded DisplayPort (eDP) technology. Customers that attempted to install Windows 7 on such computers found that they were unable to complete the deployment. When you install Windows 7 on the computer, a black screen is displayed during the installation process. However, the installation is still running. In this situation, you may be unable to complete the installation. If you have multiple displays, only the primary screen is black when you encounter this issue,Microsoft explained. Source - Windows 7 Black Screens of Death for Some AMD/ATI GPUs
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to install Windows 7 on multiple computers (over 20), overwriting the original install with a customized one with added software. I would use a boot time imaging software to simply load the image but I am concerned about the license key for each computer.Could I update the cloned license information with the license I copied from each computer beforehand? Either by getting it from the documentation that came with the computer or by using a software tool to extract the key from the Windows 7 install that was originally on the computer before I overwrite it with the clone image.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHad Windows 7 home premium for around 2 months on a brand new desktop. Never had a single problem with it untill today. Turned it on as normal, got to the log in screen where i click on the required user. As the pc is only used by me I only have 1 user availiable. I click on it like normal but this time i get a message saying 'The user profile service service failed the logon' 'user profile cannot be loaded'. It then refreshes the page and returns me back to the logon page and if i press enter the same thing just keeps repeating itself. Other option on this page are the shutdown/sleep/restart option and a little box in the bottom left corner called ease of access with various options, but none that seem relevant to the situation.

I had it in hibernate and as I flicked the lid up it shut itself down - I assumed for updates. Nothing happened.I turned it on, started windows normally as it hadn't shut down properly and waited for the log on screen. It hung on "Please wait" for about five minutes with the circle going round and round and round, then nothing, just the home page no user no password no log on.
