View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new desktop (Dell Intel core i5 2500 processor, 8gb ram, Windows 7 64bit Pro version). It is set up for automatic updates and I have not tweaked or added anything except Norton anti virus software. I am running IE9 (v9.02).
Yesterday I went to check up in IE9 Browsing History for a site I had visited earlier and found it was only displaying internal sites on my desktop visited. None of the various websites I had visited showed up. I looked back to earlier days and it was the same, nothing except internal searches.
I looked on the web for fixes, and found suggestions to check Internet options to check if it was set to Delete Browsing History when exiting search. It is not. Also to check if I am running In Private Browsing. I am not. And to try a reset of IE9 - I did and it made no difference.
I also have a Samsung Netbook running Windows 7 starter and the same version of IE9 (9.02) also running Norton anti virus and that is working just fine. So is it related to having Windows 7 64 bit version? Is there a fix?
Windows 7 has sure made this administrator account complicated. You create a default administrator account when installing Windows 7. Ok, that seems easy. Then for security and daily use you create a Standard account. Ok, only a little less obvious. But then it turns out that there is a hidden Administrator account that is disabled by default. What does that mean? Not so obvious.
Now, I had a reason to activate the hidden account. Definitely not easy until you search the forums and go through some procedures. Unfortunately, when Windows starts up, there are now three accounts showing, eg., JohnUser, JohnDefaultAdmin, Administrator.
Next step, to make the Administrator account not so obvious, is even more complicated. Figure out how to get NO accounts to show at logon. That is, revert to the old NT clt-alt-del panel where you have to enter both account name and password. (Also disable Show last logon name.) More complicated, but I got there, too.
I thought I was done. But nooooooo. Anyone who pratices safe computing by normally using a standard account knows this drill. You try to run almost any program, or download an update, etc., and you are asked for the password of an account with admin rights. What happens? You get a dialog screen that shows the name of every admin account. In this case, it would show JohnDefaultAdmin and Administrator.
I cannot find any way to enable the Administrator account and have it stay hidden in the circumstance described above.
Incidentally, the reason I needed the hidden Administrator account is that it appears to have some powers that the default administrator account does not. In my case, it was the ability to create a rescue disk without getting the widely-reported (0x80070057) error.
I have 3 accounts, plus an administrator login (in an educational environment).
Does anyone know how to hide the Administrator account on the login screen but keep it enabled?
I found this article, but it doesn't achieve what I was hoping for.
Displaying only 1 user at the login screen.
And why doesn't crtl-alt-del not work anymore at the login screen?
Is there a way to have start->run history kept while not keeping a history of the recently launched programs from the menu?
I know under the properties you have "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu", but this is what controls both.
I'm figuring theres probably some registry entry that will let me control them individually.
I want to hide my Windows 7 computer from showing up (to other computers) in he network (Start menu -> Network).I've tried "net config server /hidden:yes"Aswell as disabling both Link-Layer Topology Mapper and Responder.I even changed it to it's own Workgroup. But it still shows up to other computers in my home network.

For example, our desktops are on a different subnet than our servers, but we need to browse to them to access shared folders. When browsing the network, computers on a different subnet are not displayed. We do not have this problem with XP desktops. Are there settings on the Windows 7 computers to change that will allow the different subnet computers to be displayed?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have installed Windows 7 on a new PC and been playing around with it for a couple of days.
I have added it to my home workgroup and shared out some folders. I have turned off Windows firewall, however if I try to view the shared folders from other machines (XP) on the home network I get asked for a login and password.
Yet if I browse the other XP machines from the Windows 7 machine I can see all their folders. I can't find a setting anywhere that would seem to address this!
The hide/unhide arrows on my taskbar have disappeared and I can't figure out how to get them back. I went to properties and clicked on unhide inactive icons, but I still have the same 3 showing and none of my other ones.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a file and sharing network between my PC's, 2 Win 7's and 1 Vista, and I'm having a bit of trouble. I followed all the steps in the tutorials across the web including this link, How To Share Files and Printers Between Windows 7 and Vista - How-To Geek, and the closest I could get is the Vista accessing one of the 7's. All the PC's see each other, it's just when I try to access files over the network with the 7's I get a "You don't have permission to access...contact your network administrator" error. I'm the admin on both computers and I really can't get by this. It's so frustrating, I have been doing this for like 3 days already.Just a bit of info, I do have BitDefender 2011 on both the 7's and not the Vista. Although it might not make sense, I thought this might be the issue of why the Vista can access one of the 7's, I disabled the service through msconfig -> services and startup. Also disabled the firewall on all. It still didn't fix the problem.I actually figured it out. Although I enabled sharing with "everyone" and set permissions to full control, "everyone" was not showing up under group and users in the security tab. I just added that and voila.

I'm not able to logon to my machine using our Admin account. I just get the usual error that the account isn't valid. Is there something I need to change locally or in Active Directory?
I work at a company in the UK which is attempting to start rolling out Windows 7 to all computers (early adopters and all that, it's just a lot easier than the current mishmash of OSes we have!). One of the 4 users migrated so far is having an odd issue with her wired network (her network controller is a "Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet"). She's the only person not from the IT dept or the MD of the company to be moved across, so we set her up as a non-administrator to avoid problematic software etc etc.
Suddenly, 3 days ago, whenever she switched on her computer, the connection would claim "Limited or No Connectivity" (even though she appeared to be connected to the Domain), and there was no Internet access. Having played around with numerous things (driver updates, both from Broadcom and HP - the laptop manufacturer, being the main one), I found the only way to get it working again was to disable and re-enable the network controller. The problem with this is that it required a UAC authorization (even though I'd set UAC to never notify), and that requires a domain administrator password (which is a pain in the wotsit).
Anyway, I figured, reluctantly, that if I set her account up as a local administrator, that at least it shouldn't require a password to reset the device. Rebooted the PC, and suddenly the wired network started working from boot without the need to reset the controller.
My question is - has anyone else had any issues with non-administrators being forced to reset their network controllers to get internet connectivity, and is there a known fix?
The Sites you are trying to open are not allowed to view network administrator. What should I do?????????
View 2 Replies View RelatedA little background and info: I support a number of people who for one reason or another need to be able to do things a local admin can do like install programs and start services (or more accurately allow a program they're running to start a service). All users are in the local administrators group. The local admin account is enabled (and renamed) so that we as administrators have local access when the machine comes in for service. The machines are joined to a AD domain so that we can control a lot of the security via GPO. Everything worked fine in XP.
We are getting a few different "you do not have permission" errors. When the user tries to run OpenAFS (which starts a service) they get a "you do not have permission" error. There is no way around this error.
Also, when the users try to run Lotus Notes they get a "you do not have permission" error. When we go into compatibility mode and check the "run as administrator" (or just right click and "run as administrator) it works fine, but they have to click the elevated privileges. The program was installed while logged in as the user.
Again, all users are members of the local administrators group. When the local admin account logs in all these programs run fine. This behavior started in Vista and I chalked it up to "vista sucks". Windows 7 so far seems to be great, except that like in vista, members of the local administrators group are not really local administrators. How do I make them true local administrators?
I use an old XP app (JetToolbar - available at JetToolBar - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com) and do not want to change but I cant make it work on Windows 7. The application installs and starts up just fine but it is not possible to drag icons/programs/files to the toolbar - I just get the 'no entry' sign (Circle with line through)However, the application runs fine when logged on to the hidden Administrator account. If I set up the application in the hidden Admin account and then log on as a normal admin user and run it from that account, the icons I set up are just not visible. So what do I have to change in my normal user account (member of administrators) to make this drag and drop work?I have tried 'Run as administrator' but that made no difference. Ive read about dropping to 'Run as User' apps from 'Run as Admin' apps but that's not the problem (at least problem occurs when app is run as user or run as admin)

If it does save, it will save the initial page but nothing after that. Normally when opening a website, a bar will appear above the taskbar at the bottom of the screen that says 'Website found, Waiting for reply...' on the left hand side and 100% on the right, etc., that bar is no longer appearing. I've check the internet options part and the 'delete browsing history on exit' is unchecked. Disk space is set at 250 and days at 20. I'm running windows 7, IE 9.
