Actual Place Of Registry Values?

Jul 5, 2011

I recently installed 2 new disks, put windows (7) on it and kept the old hdd as a back up, and to just be able to get to my old files should it be necessary. However the question is this: Id love to just move all my games from my old disk to my new one, but I'd need the old registry values. Are they anywhere physically on the old disk? Obviously I can't acces them by regedit, so is there a way to import (parts) of it Or do I have to disconnect the new drives, boot on the old disk and copy what I need?

Edit The Registry By Adding New Multi-string Values?

Oct 1, 2012

I am trying to fix an issue i am having, involving midi control through usb on win 7 64 bit, i think ive finally found a fix, but i am to inexperienced with using the registry editor to do it. Here it is (I edited the registry in the entries for 4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318. There I added a new Multi-String Value "UpperFilters" with data "ksthunk". it pertains to the sound and video game controllers that you can access through the control panel, but i need to be able to find that registry entry(4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318) and then add a new multi-string value(upperfilters) with data ksthunk.

Where To Locate A Script Running That Re-writes Registry Values

Dec 28, 2011

I am running on Windows 7 home premium 64-bit. There is a legalnoticecaption and legalnoticetext enabled in the registry, and when I delete these values and restart, they re-appear! I've even tried deleting them altogether. I'm guessing there is some sort of script enabled that re-writes the registry values upon deletion, and I need some help identifying and getting rid of said script.

USB (The Actual Port) Not Detecting

Dec 16, 2011

I'm trying to plug a USB camera into the back of my computer, but the computer won't acknowledge that I plugged it in. I don't get an error message or anything, it simply doesn't seem to notice anything. (I've tried it with a flash drive, too—same deal.)

I'm not missing drivers for the device itself, as I've plugged them both into other ports and they work fine. It seems that the port itself is the problem. I just reinstalled Windows yesterday after getting infected with a System Fix virus, so that may have something to do with it.

EDIT: It may have something to do with my BIOS, as I changed my boot order for the reinstall. I'm not aware of anything else being changed, but it's possible.

Registry After Windows Update And Registry Optimization Tool

Jun 16, 2012

While windows was uploading some updates yesterday, I cleaned my registry using Iolo's system mechanic tool and that's where the problems started. (I already read and understood your message: don't use those tools and stay out of your registry. A lesson I learned too late, unfortunately.)My computer rebooted and after a couple of minutes I noticed the message: " failure configuring windows features reverting changes ". I managed to bypass this loop by running in safe mode and recover my computer to a restore point in the past. This only worked partially: I get windows to run in normal mode but I get this message: "system failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. Restore point damaged or was deleted during restore". So it didn't restore but I can get into my windows now.So I don't get the 'reverting change loop' anymore, so I can access my computer but what's the mess? Well my computer is slow as hell.Like mentioned above, I already looked around on this forum and wrote down what I already tried. [code] My computer is terrible slow because of a registry defrag/optimization of a registry tool (in combination with windows update) --> I need to find a way to get back my old registry files but system recovery ain't working.

Difference Between File Repository And Actual Driver Folder?

May 31, 2012

I was trying to uninstall a print driver for a network printer for one of my users (Windows 7), and I ran into that issue where it tells you that it can't remove the drivers because they are still in use (this after stopped and restarting the spooler, rebooting, etc.). So I was looking at the "File Repository" for this print driver (C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepositoryhpcu115u.inf_amd64_neutral_4a9d334b04ff58b2), and it has the same files as another folder that is pointed to under the "Driver" tab in the Print Server Properties dialogue (C:Windowssystem32spoolDRIVERSx643). My questions are the following:

1. What is the purpose of the File Repository folder as compared to the driver folder as listed above?

2. If I am unable to remove the print drivers through Print Management (using admin rights), should I manually delete the corresponding File Repository folder, should I delete the files in the corresponding folder as listed above (C:Windowssystem32spoolDRIVERSx643), neither, or both?

3. Why in the world does it give that message, even after having deleted that printer? Is it a matter of other users on that machine being mapped to that same network printer, or what?

I did check to make sure there are no other services started that use the printer driver.

No matter what I do it will only copy the actual contents i.e. the result of the previous calculation. What I have tried:-

1. Deleting all contents and formats from the range of cells and starting over;
2. Using the drop-down menu of the paste button to select the "paste-special / formula" option (which keeps jumping back to the first default option at the top of the list);
3. Running the Office diagnostics built-in software off the microsoft top-left button to detect faults and anomalies - Nothing works and I am at a loss.......most peculiar...........

When Save Files From Programs Onto Desktop / Cannot See Them Directly From Actual Desktop

Oct 26, 2011

When I save files from programs (aka Word, Photoshop, anything)onto my Desktop, I cannot see them directly from the actual desktop. I can only see them when I open up Explorer, and click on the Desktop tab. Then all my files are visible. I thought they were hidden...but they apparently aren't.It possibly seems like a refresh error.I did find a way around this..I go to Control Panel >> Appearance and Personalization >> Under Folder Options >> Show Hidden Files and Folders. I click on Reset folders, Apply, and then OK, and my missing files pop up on my actual desktop. But from then on, any new files I save are only visible in Explorer again. I don't want to go to Control Panel everytime I have to save something to the desktop? I've run Norton and Microsoft Essentials and I have no viruses. What can I do?I just found out I can also see my files after pressing f5 (refresh)so I guess the problem is HOW do I get my computer to refresh the desktop automatically?

Guide To In-place Upgrade

Dec 6, 2009

A simple guide to a successful in-place upgrade

You have most likely heard that a clean (custom) install is the preferred install method when migrating to Windows 7. That is most certainly true. However, there are situations when in-place upgrade is more practical method to use. Tens, maybe hundreds of gigs software installed, no install media found for the software and so on.

You might have heard horror stories about non-working Seven and how it’s all in-place upgrade’s fault, or how an in-place leaves so much unwanted and not used pieces and bits it seriously puts your system in danger, at least making it slow. Most of these horror stories come from two types of users, those who have never done a Vista to Seven in-place upgrade but have heard third hand information and rumours, and those who have not prepared installation as it should be prepared.

I have done a lot of in-place upgrades, both from XP to Vista and lately from Vista to Seven. I have even successfully tried a one-session XP to Seven via Vista in-place upgrade (in-place XP to Vista, installing service packs and drivers and then directly in-place further to Seven), to show some colleagues how to do a safe and working upgrade. I have never encountered any upgrade related problems; I do have had my share of installation problems and issues but I’ve always found out that after failing to do an in-place upgrade, the same issue has occurred also after a clean install. Most often the reason is non-compatible hardware. You cannot blame in-place if your hardware refuses to work with Seven.

First, let’s take a look at the chart about in-place options:

As you can see it is not possible to "downgrade when upgrading" i.e. you cannot in-place upgrade from for example Vista Ultimate to Seven Home Premium. You need to have the same or better edition (notice that you can in-place upgrade to Seven Professional only from Vista Business). Your current Vista needs at least service pack 1 to be able to upgrade to Seven.

Notice please: You can only in-place upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista. Older Windows versions (XP, 2000 etc.) can not be in-place upgraded to Seven You cannot in-place upgrade a 32-bit Vista to a 64-bit Seven or 64-bit Vista to a 32-bit Seven The language versions have to match, you can in-place upgrade an English Vista only with an English Seven.

So, let’s start. This guide will show you how to prepare and do an in-place upgrade from Vista to Seven. Following these steps you are most likely to get it right first time.

1. Check the compatibility issues

Download and run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Follow any instructions given Uninstall all incompatible software, update drivers and software if Advisor tells so

2. Prepare your system

Update (flash) your system BIOS to most current version After flashing BIOS, restore it to factory defaults 3. Prepare your software setup.

Uninstall all applications and software you never use or which is expired (test and trial versions, software you know you are never going to use like the game you tested but didn’t like etc.) Update AV and Firewall software to the most current versions, including virus definitions Turn off AV, Firewall and all malware software. Remember to turn them on again after installation is finished Check and run Windows Update until it tells you Vista is up to date Clean up your system deleting all unnecessary files like temp folders etc. Backup your system 4. Prepare your hardware setup.

Check Device Manager to assure all devices are working Disconnect all external devices, leave only the main display, mouse and keyboard If upgrading a laptop, be sure it is connected to an AC power source. That’s it. Insert the install media and start doing an in-place upgrade. Please notice this is the most boring part of the process; an in-place upgrade can take hours.

An in-place upgrade can easily take longer than doing a clean install and re-installing all the software. If you don't have too much personal files to transfer, only have a limited amount of applications to re-install and if you have all install media, I recommend doing a clean install. Remember though there's nothing wrong doing an in-place upgrade. It works well and fine when done right.
