View 1 Replies View RelatedBasically my ethernet capability flew out the window ranomly the other day. Wireless works perfectly however.. before ...the other day.... it has been working solidly for almost a year Im plugged into a router which is running off my cable modem, both sitting less than a foot away from me. Also hooked up to the router is another computer, and my xbox the xbox works but the other computer cant seem to get a local connection either.
at first i assumed they were having an ip conflict of some sort, but why now after all this time?
I have tried:
- ipconfig /release - /renew
- abolishing bonjour
- taking the other pc completely off the router/network
- updating drivers.....rolling back the updates
- different cables different ports
-plugging directly into the modem
- and asking nicely
im on my laptop, Dell studio also the first time i noticed this happen was directly after having powered down the modem and router.
below is the ipconfig

I have searched google for ours trying to find a fix for this but to no avail.CD drive and virtual drives dont appear in my computer and whenever i put in a dvd nothing comes up.it appears in device manager and disc management however so i know there is nothing physically wrong with the optical drive. Under disc manager i can see the details about the dvd such as dvd name, size etc.i tried changing drive letter and path but unfortunately that doesnt fix it. the letter "applies" for a second then disappears again.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop and now find that I can no longer sync (I'm using Syncback SE) over a patch cable between ethernet ports. I had previously been doing this quite effectively on Windows XP and my procedure was.
1. Both computers were in the same workgroup and accessed the same wireless network (secure).
2. Ethernet patch cable - usually showed up in the lower right corner as having 'limited or no access'.
3. Shared my user folder on the laptop (after disabling wireless for security - but this worked whether wireless was disabled or not)
4. Ran Syncback SE ver 4.1.3.0. and synced my files between the laptop and desktop.
Then I bought Win7U for the desktop, and the same procedure as above worked fine between Win7U-desktop and WinXP-laptop.
Then I bought Win7U for the laptop, and what happened next was odd :
1. It worked like a dream - really fast transfers etc, scanning very fast. I think that at this time I had somehow managed to put both in the homegroup but they were communicating over the ethernet.
2. As the sync was taking place I launched ITunes and synced my iPhone. It may be coincidence, but the ethernet cable connection was lost at that point.
3. Now I cannot re-establish the ethernet connection.
What is the correct procedure for achieving what I'm trying to do above ? Why does HomeGroup insist on using my wireless connection instead of using the ethernet cable direct connection ?
<whine on> In my close to 20 years of using Microsoft Windows, why haven't they managed to make two Windows PCs recognise each other and share files quickly and simply, like you can with that other OS.....<whine off>
Computer 1: Windows 2000 Pro. Drivers are all updated. Connection to router is normal (as in web pages load, for example).
Computer 2: Just updated to Windows 7 RC x86. Drivers are all updated. connection to router is normal (as in web pages load, for example).
Router is Linksys and DSL is pretty generic SBC/AT&T with filter on phone line.
Running an MMO (World of Warcraft) on both computers. This has never been an issue before. Since the update, computer 2 when attempting to log in is getting most of the way then failing and disconnecting. Trying to debug that on the MMO end, but the odd part is that it is killing the connection computer 1 has at the same time. This never happened when Computer 2 had Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP installed - only since upgrading to Windows 7 this morning.
I'm about to try giving Computer 2 a static IP - something it has never had - but is there anything else specific to Windows 7 that I might want to check?
Recently the power went out in my house. Ever since the power has come back on, I haven't been able to use my wired internet connection. When I look at my devices, my Intel 82566 Gigabit Network Connection has the status "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device." I've tried re-installing and updating the driver, but I can't tell whether I've done this successfully. In any event, it still doesn't work.

I have already tried via another cable, connecting it from the other way and stuff like that. It works on my Brother's Laptop. I also know for certain that is it not a hardware issue as I have tested it on a live boot from Ubuntu 11.10 that I had lying around and the internet worked perfectly fine. So I know that the problem is with windows.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe wireless is one I share with my roommates and is fast. The wired NIC connects to a router which has slower internet. The reason I connect to the wired router is so my PC can talk to a linux machine, which I use for some data downloading/analysis.I want to disable internet from the wired connection but keep the ability to talk to other machines on the wired network. I just changed the IPv4 settings and deleted the DNS server information. Is this the best way to do so? I want the wireless to provide internet.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn our office we have our PC's connected to our inter-office network server via the Ethernet ports (Local Area Connection) with a hard wire to a hub, that in turn runs to our server. We also each have a wireless internet connection on our PC's via a USB wireless adapter. When we were using XP this was not a problem to have access to the server AND the internet at the same time.
When my PC died last year I bought a Dell Inspiron 560 slim tower with Windows 7 to replace my XP machine. The first problem I ran into was that I could no longer use the wireless internet connection AND the hard wired connection to our server operating at the same time. If I stayed connected to our server, I will not have a wireless connection. If I go into the "Local Area Connection" properties and "disable" the connection, I almost instantly get my wireless connection back. The big issue when doing this is if I leave our database program (ACT!) open while the server connection is disabled, I have to shut down ACT!, then restart it before I can connect it to the server. If I try to without closing and reopening it I get all kinds of errors.
So, in the mean time, I have just put a shortcut on my desktop that allows me to enable and disable the Local Area Connection when I need internet access.
A couple days ago, my boss's PC grabbed a virus that slipped past McAfee (that program is now gone!!) and really hosed up his PC. He bought the Windows 7 upgrade software and wiped the hard drive and installed Windows 7. He is now having the same issue as I am.
For what it's worth, he is using a Belkin Wireless-G USB wireless adapter, and mine is a Netgear Wireless-N USB adapter.
Is there any way we can have the two connections operate at the same time like they did in XP? It really becomes a pain sometimes when we are on the phone with a client and we need to jump back and forth between info that is online, and info that is on our server that we access through ACT!.

View 3 Replies View RelatedFor the past half a year I have had my PC, I've always had some problems with my internet connection and Windows 7. I've always thought that it's a case of bad hardware and such but it's starting to look like it's Win7 that's giving me the finger.I've mainly been using a WLAN USB-interface and from the very beginning problems have been occurring. At first, the connection would be really unstable. It might stay up for 2 minutes or for a week. Rather annoying. I tracked down the problem and thought I had found a solution. Apple's Time Capsule has also a WLAN feature and it was Time Capsule's network I was using. I found out that Windows 7 and Time Capsule weren't all that compatible so I had to find another solution. Luckily enough, there's another WLAN in our household. It's much farther away than the other so I was afraid I might have some connection issues. And I did. The signal was weak at times and I just couldn't establish a connection. So, I moved my PC to another room and it started working properly. The distance from the router was cut down from maybe 8 meters to 2 meters or so.However, I couldn't keep my PC in that room forever and it seemed odd that when I moved the PC a few meters away from the router, the signal disappeared. So, that in mind, I went and took the USB-interface to the place I bought it from. I figured it was the interface because all the other of my devices connected to the Internet worked fine. The room is no Faraday cage. They still have the interface and I didn't get a replacement for the time being so I had to connect the PC to the Internet with a cable. At first, the MOBO wouldn't recognize the network. Then I rebooted and replugged all the cables and the ethernet LEDs started blinking. I was happy - I even checked that the lights indicated that there was data activity and that there was a 100 Mbps connection. But still - I oouldn't connect to the Internet. Windows 7 would only say that there're no connections available. I started realizing that it might be Win7. So I booted the PC up with Ubuntu since I have it on dual-boot and surprise, surprise - the Internet connection works perfectly. And here I am writing this post. The cable connection has worked with this PC before and it works now with other PCs, too.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had my computer for 3 years and it has worked great, i got a new router bout 4 months ago and it works great. about 2 weeks ago my desktop's connection which is wired, basically stopped working. It lets me get online, but the connection either keeps dropping or just doesnt work. Ive watched my connection and it will disconnect alot and instantly reconnect. I can get online but my page takes half a minute to load, and sometimes it just wont load and say it cannot connect to the web page. I have tried google chrome and media firefox and they dont work either. I have reset modem and router many times and that didnt help even a bit. I have switched routers and that didnt help either. In networking safe mode, my connection is completely stable and it runs fast and loads everything. I have ran norton and malawarebytes many times and my connection is still unstable. I have stwitched ethernet cords too and that didnt help either. I have two labtops and a ps3 and their connection works completely fine so it would just be my computer. Since it runs great in networking mode, it might be hardware but i dont know what. It might not be hardware though because i am nowhere near a computer knowledgable.

View 9 Replies View RelatedBoth my laptop and desktop are running Windows 7 64 bit. They both have the same issue through wired ethernet, but not through wireless connections. The reason I do not use wireless is because I only have 2-zero bars in my room. I am at a college campus and they have said the problem is mine and not theirs. The problem is that whenever my computer turns on or awakens from sleep, the ethernet connection is gone and for about 15 minutes it says "Identifying... No Internet Access." The wired connection starts after about 15 minutes, but this is insanely difficult and frustrating to maneuver around since I often don't have 15 minutes to wait.
I have tried various things from forums to no avail. These things include disabling IP 6, updating my ethernet driver from the website, manually setting the IP, and disabing Avast. I do not have any firewall other than Windows Firewall and only have basic programs like Office, Itunes, Firefox.... I am convinced the issue is with the college network, but they have said their test computer was unable to duplicate my problem in my room.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to connect a printer via crossover cable to a Windows 7/64 laptop. The printer has a USB port, but it is defective. I created a xover cable. How do I set up this printer (HP Deskjet 6940) using the xover cable connected to the ethernet port on the laptop?I found this thread, but as the last post indicates, it lacks the details needed to do the job. Installing printer via Ethernet Cable I connected the printer to the laptop with the xover cable, ran through the printer wizard to install the HP6940 drivers as per the Windows 7 printer installation routine, but nothing will print. I tried the MS FixIt routine and still no printing. All I see is an error - printing for this printer when I open up active printers.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've searched through the forums and other places, and tried many "solutions" but they don't seem to work. So the situation is I have two computers, Windows 7 and XP. They are connected via a crossover cable. Currently, I can access my shared folders on the XP computer from the 7 computer, but I can't access folders on the 7 from the XP. I can map the network drive, but it says that is not accessible and access is denied.
I configured the network settings and disabled the firewalls so that both computers can ping each other. On the Windows 7 computer, I have made the network identification into "Work". I believe I made the correct options for the "Advanced Sharing Settings" tab. They are both in the same work group. For the shared folder on the 7 computer, I went to "Advanced Sharing", checked the box, and allowed "Full Control" for "Everyone" in the "Permissions" tab.
So I bought a crossover cable just to connect two laptops. Like, a network. Mine is running on windows 7 and the other laptop is running on Vista. So I configured both laptops to be in the same workgroup (left the homegroup in Windows 7) and configured both NIC's to have an IP in the same class - one of them is 10.1.1.1 and the other one is 10.1.1.2 and subnet masks are the same 255.255.255.0. Now, I should be able to ping each of the laptops. But it pings only from Vista (10.1.1.2) to Windows 7 (10.1.1.1) and not the other way.
Network window in Windows 7 shows some computers in the different network, but in the same building, but does not show the laptop connected with the crossover cable. Network window in win vista does not show any computers. Both computers have some shared folders (for users Guest and Everyone).
I would really like to know what am I doing wrong, and how do I connect these two computers so I could easily transfer some files?
I have a laptop and desktop both running win7, both connected via wifi to the same router which is two floors down. I would like to access the laptop from desktop via remote desktop. It works fine but is a bit slow. My question is: Can I connect the laptop and desktop via a crossover cable to speed up the remote desktop connection between the two computers?I suspect plugging one or both computers directly into the router may help but I would really like to keep the two computers in the same room. The purpose of connecting remote desktop between the two computers is NOT for sharing the internet connection or even for file sharing; it is simply because the laptop computer has some applications on it that the desktop computer does not.
