Sharing Between Windows 7 And XP Via Crossover Cable?
Jul 19, 2011
I've searched through the forums and other places, and tried many "solutions" but they don't seem to work. So the situation is I have two computers, Windows 7 and XP. They are connected via a crossover cable. Currently, I can access my shared folders on the XP computer from the 7 computer, but I can't access folders on the 7 from the XP. I can map the network drive, but it says that is not accessible and access is denied.
I configured the network settings and disabled the firewalls so that both computers can ping each other. On the Windows 7 computer, I have made the network identification into "Work". I believe I made the correct options for the "Advanced Sharing Settings" tab. They are both in the same work group. For the shared folder on the 7 computer, I went to "Advanced Sharing", checked the box, and allowed "Full Control" for "Everyone" in the "Permissions" tab.

I need to connect a printer via crossover cable to a Windows 7/64 laptop. The printer has a USB port, but it is defective. I created a xover cable. How do I set up this printer (HP Deskjet 6940) using the xover cable connected to the ethernet port on the laptop?I found this thread, but as the last post indicates, it lacks the details needed to do the job. Installing printer via Ethernet Cable I connected the printer to the laptop with the xover cable, ran through the printer wizard to install the HP6940 drivers as per the Windows 7 printer installation routine, but nothing will print. I tried the MS FixIt routine and still no printing. All I see is an error - printing for this printer when I open up active printers.

So I bought a crossover cable just to connect two laptops. Like, a network. Mine is running on windows 7 and the other laptop is running on Vista. So I configured both laptops to be in the same workgroup (left the homegroup in Windows 7) and configured both NIC's to have an IP in the same class - one of them is 10.1.1.1 and the other one is 10.1.1.2 and subnet masks are the same 255.255.255.0. Now, I should be able to ping each of the laptops. But it pings only from Vista (10.1.1.2) to Windows 7 (10.1.1.1) and not the other way.
Network window in Windows 7 shows some computers in the different network, but in the same building, but does not show the laptop connected with the crossover cable. Network window in win vista does not show any computers. Both computers have some shared folders (for users Guest and Everyone).
I would really like to know what am I doing wrong, and how do I connect these two computers so I could easily transfer some files?

I have a laptop and desktop both running win7, both connected via wifi to the same router which is two floors down. I would like to access the laptop from desktop via remote desktop. It works fine but is a bit slow. My question is: Can I connect the laptop and desktop via a crossover cable to speed up the remote desktop connection between the two computers?I suspect plugging one or both computers directly into the router may help but I would really like to keep the two computers in the same room. The purpose of connecting remote desktop between the two computers is NOT for sharing the internet connection or even for file sharing; it is simply because the laptop computer has some applications on it that the desktop computer does not.

I have Windows 7 Pro (RTM) installed on a DELL Precision M65 laptop.
My LAN interface reports "Cable unplugged" although the cable is inserted and working.
I have no network connection through this interface.
the onboard NIC is a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit adapter and the driver reports it is working correctly.
If i try to install the latest driver from Broadcom, Windows says I already have the latest driver installed!
Any Suggestions?

I have a new gaming computer with a high end video card and plenty of RAM and a high speed cable Internet connection. I also have a HDHomeRun TV cable unit which is listed to work with MS Media Center. When I set up my Media Center/TV connection it recognizes my HDHomeRun TV connection and all three TV channels via my MCard I got from Comcast cable. But next to the last dialog window, during setting up my TV connection, I got the following message, "Your computer is not digital cable ready. You will not be able to set it up for use with a cable card."

I have some trouble to connect to my camera IP (E50 Ranger-SICK IVP). I was on windows XP before, and everything was going well. Now that I have a Windows 7, I can't set up the configuration of my pc to connect to my camera. What I have seen is that after setting my configuration in Windows 7 as in the XP's OS, I have got a No network access. I can't either ping my camera and my computer itself using is its IP.My camera IP is 192.168.0.5.On XP, I have set up only an IP adress and mask (192.168.0.2 & 255.255.255.0) and it was working correctly.

For the past half a year I have had my PC, I've always had some problems with my internet connection and Windows 7. I've always thought that it's a case of bad hardware and such but it's starting to look like it's Win7 that's giving me the finger.I've mainly been using a WLAN USB-interface and from the very beginning problems have been occurring. At first, the connection would be really unstable. It might stay up for 2 minutes or for a week. Rather annoying. I tracked down the problem and thought I had found a solution. Apple's Time Capsule has also a WLAN feature and it was Time Capsule's network I was using. I found out that Windows 7 and Time Capsule weren't all that compatible so I had to find another solution. Luckily enough, there's another WLAN in our household. It's much farther away than the other so I was afraid I might have some connection issues. And I did. The signal was weak at times and I just couldn't establish a connection. So, I moved my PC to another room and it started working properly. The distance from the router was cut down from maybe 8 meters to 2 meters or so.However, I couldn't keep my PC in that room forever and it seemed odd that when I moved the PC a few meters away from the router, the signal disappeared. So, that in mind, I went and took the USB-interface to the place I bought it from. I figured it was the interface because all the other of my devices connected to the Internet worked fine. The room is no Faraday cage. They still have the interface and I didn't get a replacement for the time being so I had to connect the PC to the Internet with a cable. At first, the MOBO wouldn't recognize the network. Then I rebooted and replugged all the cables and the ethernet LEDs started blinking. I was happy - I even checked that the lights indicated that there was data activity and that there was a 100 Mbps connection. But still - I oouldn't connect to the Internet. Windows 7 would only say that there're no connections available. I started realizing that it might be Win7. So I booted the PC up with Ubuntu since I have it on dual-boot and surprise, surprise - the Internet connection works perfectly. And here I am writing this post. The cable connection has worked with this PC before and it works now with other PCs, too.

After that, randomly, but especially when browsing the internet, the computer freezes and I must restart it.I have to mention the fact that if I connect my pc to internet using directly the cable from my ISP ( a pppoe dial-up connection) everything works fine.

I have an HP Laserjet 1100 printer I am trying to connect to my new Windows 7 Enterprise Edition 32 bit OS computer. Drivers are installed and I have had this printer on other Windows 7 32 bit computers with parallel ports. The new computer does not have a parallel port visible, so I thought I'd try a parallel to USB cable and attack it from that angle. I plugged the USB end into the computer first and then connected my USB -> parallel cable to the printer's parallel cable. Windows 7 Devices and Printers now shows a IEEE-1284 Controller that wasn't there before. How do I make this device my primary printer?

My computer runs on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. I downloaded the latest installation software for my Lexmark X7675 Professional inkjet printer and installed it. I chose the USB cable option and when I plug in the USB cable driver installation proceeds without problems until it says that the drivers has been installed correctly and the printer is ready for use. The printer is also available on the Printers and Drivers manager of Windows. But, to test the printer, I tried to print a page from MS-Word by clicking Ctrl + P> OK. The document is sent to the spooler where it just sits with the status "Printing". Furthermore, when I try to adjust the printer properties from Word by clicking: Ctrl + P> Properties, the window just freezes and there is no response.
Also when I click: Ctrl + P> Find Printers, in MS-Word, a fault message immediately pops up that says: "The Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable". I sometimes also get a Lexmark error message that says that there are communication problems.
I already spent a day installing and uninstalling the Lexmark software and drivers, as well as various other tricks offered by the Lexmark fault wizard. I found that sometimes when I reboot the computer that the document hanging in the spooler gets printed out while rebooting. However, the printer can't seem to print normally when I click print or when I try to print a test page from the printer's options box. The printer is coupled by means of Wi-Fi to the home Wi-Fi network and another computer prints faultlessly to the Lexmark with the same software and drivers but just using the Wi-Fi option. How to get this computer to print via USB cable.

Has anyone figured out a patch or work around for encrypted basic cable ( that I pay for plus other stb's ) that works with a HDTV tuner card. I have a Hauppaug 1800 digital/analog PVR through WMC that has become useless since Comcast went all digital. LOL I live in an area between D.C. and Richmond Va. Get the irony in this, I am less than a mile ( as the crow flies ) from Comcasts antennas/dishes and a quarter mile from our state police communications tower. So it is imposable to get a single over the air channel with a great antenna and amp.

I am running the latest version of windows home edition and can't seem to get it to connect to my SMB shares on my mac, or even see or acknowledge my mac's existence. I'm more of a mac guy so I'm positive my MBS shares aren't the problem. I can even put my mac's IP address into the windows side browser and get the "It works!" message. Under the windows network however I can't get it to access the mac. I've tried being in the same homegroup, no home group, creating identical users on each machine, shutting off the firewalls, adding registry hacks for LmCompatability level and still nothing. Most online help guides I have found point to things that don't even exist on this operating system, such as Local Security Policy or secpol.msc?
