Ever since then I have only used XP, but every time the computer starts up it goes into Grub and I have to choose to enter XP. Basically what I am looking to do is remove all traces of Mint and Grub and I suppose XP for that matter and upgrade to Windows 7. What is the best way to do that considering I have a netbook which does not have a CD/DVD drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI originally had windows 7 professional 64 bit on my laptop. I had a 10 Gb partition, which I divided in SWAP and / mount to install Ubuntu Linux. My computer now loads into Grub loader. All is well, its just now I want to get rid of Linux. (I will install it on desktop and mess around with it there.) I wanted to know how to get rid of the Grub loader.
I googled it and found that you can restore the windows (didn't find anything for windows 7) bootloader using the installation disk and going into repair. The instructions however were all for windows xp and few for vista. I want to know if it will work for Windows 7. I don't have a windows 7 DVD. I have a Windows 7 professional upgrade disk 64 bit. My Vista came pre loaded on the laptop, and i have recovery disks for it. Will I be able to do it from the Windows 7 upgrade disk.

I have removed a program from my Win 7 HP SP1 64-bit system but its entry still appears in both Win Add/Remove and Revo Uninstaller. I have tried the technique suggested by just about every Google search return for the problem (regedit: HKLM...current version >> uninstall) but the program does not appear in that list.I have gone through the registry and removed every reference to the program I could find by expanding literally every branch in Current User, Local Machine and Users. The entry still remains.The problem it creates is that is is being used as a default program selection for opening more than a few file types and I would like to be rid of it.

The problem I seem to be facing is on the "Add a new Entry Step". His secondary OS partition has a drive letter assigned to it and I do not. I've gone into computer management and have tried to assign a drive letter to either of my secondary OS's hard drive partitions and it will not let me.

/dev/sda1 ntfs (Windows 7 system reserved) 100 MB
/dev/sda2 ntfs (Windows7 C: drive) 99 GB (includes 4 GB of preloaded page file space)
/dev/sda3 ntfs (Shared drive - Windows7 E: Drive / Ubuntu sda3) 801 GB
/dev/sda4 extended partition 32 GB
/dev/sda5 ext4 (Linux Root) 30 GB
/dev/sda6 linux-swap 2 GB
I set it up so that I could access my E: drive from either the windows or ubuntu operating system. It has worked perfectly so far (about 6 months). But, here is the problem:For some reason as the share drive (my E: drive / sda3) grows Windows thinks that the windows system drive (sda2/c:drive) is also growing. So that now I have a low storage warning stating that there is only 8.76 GB of free space left on my 99 GB C: drive. When, in reality, there should be about 77 GB of free space. I've made hidden files/folders viewable and downloaded treesizefree so I know what should be on the drive. The Treesizefree output shows the expected 22 GB of space but also shows only 9 GB of free space. So, the missing space is nearly exactly the size of my shared drive (sda3/E:drive). So somehow, I think the windows OS is double counting my shared E: drive against my C: drive.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed a new hard drive, and then installed windows to that new hard drive with the old one still connected and I now the two drives are somehow, linked so that if I remove the old drive, windows doesn't boot. When I reconnect the drive, windows boots up fine. I checked the boot priorities in the bios and its all as it should be.
I tried the windows repair disk, used the top option three times (as I've seen recommended on other forums), to no avail. I've tried the other options but the problem is, the windows installation is not detected, same with restore points, nothing works.
I think there's something to do with the Disk Management utility. I have the two disks, disk0 and disk1, disk1 is the disk I want to remove.
this is what the page looks like:
disk0 (boot, page file, crash dump, primary partition) disk1 (system, active, primary partition) + (8mb unallocated)
It seems the System-(thing?) is on disk1 so when i remove the drive, the computer doesnt boot. Makes sense. What doesnt make sense is that windows ISNT installed on that disk so why the hell is "system" on there and causing trouble??
Would making the partition on disk0 active solve my problem? I dont want to click on anything and break it so I ask here.
I have not been able to find a straight answer for. Is it legal to buy a pre-built computer store bought and remove the hard drive with windows 7 already on it and put it into a custom built computer? Does it even work? I was wondering because I don't want to pay 200+ dollars for just a hard drive and operating system. kinda ruins the whole idea of a "budget" build.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a crashed Lacie network storage device, something in it's networking board is fried. It's comprised of 2 separate HDD's, both 500gig. I was afraid they were going to be stripped but it appears they hold their own complete files. I was able to look at the files through a file recovery program on Hiren's bootdisk. Said program was unable to keep file structure however. It seems theres no way to activate it to be read as a disk in windows. Computer management reads both of the disks as having 5 small partitions and a large (476gig) partition on it. No real way to look into that partition though?A couple other programs analyzed the disk and tell me it's 'linux native'. how to pull the files as well as folder structure out of it?

When I installed the unit, one the first boot, I could see both drives.One the second boot, It had formed a RAID 0 to show it as one large drive. I now have 150gb boot section, a 100mb reserve and a 90gb unallocated space. what can I do to remove the partition and combine the space so I have access to the full drive? View 4 Replies View RelatedEquipment: Acer Aspire 5535 Laptop Originally running Vista Home Premium - no problem. I have updated to W7 and now on W7 Ultimate SP1 32 bit I can slot an DS card into the card reader and copy to/from with Explorer.
I then eject the device using Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon in the rhs of the Task Bar.
I remove the card and then any other card slotted in is not recognised - including the original one. It does not appear in the Explorer window and is not accessible.
If I look on Device Manager, under Universal Bus Controllers, the eigth one down is USB Mass Storage Device and is showing an ! in yellow triangle. Right click on this brings up properties which tells me:
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)
To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again." Well, if course I did remove the card but it don't see that
If I reboot the LT this is cleared. If I watch Device manager whilst ejecting the card, nothing happens till I actually, physically take out the card when it updates the window to show the fault triangle. I have checked for latest driver and am told it has the latest one. Other USB ports work OK.
Dual Core Windows 7 Pro 64 bit Toshiba laptop. My daughter was working on a Power Point project for school. She went to plug in her flash drive and it didn't seem to load the drive up. She unplugged it and then plugged it back in. We got a BSOD. We restarted it and it BSOD again. I tried some general troubleshooting, including restoring it to a previous version, and now cannot get into Windows at all. Not even in safe mode. Now I am getting multiple BSODs.
Currently I am seeing these BSODs:
I am getting one when just trying to start and run windows I am getting a BSOD about memory management. If I try to go into safe mode it loads the files and then I get a BSOD regarding the fbwf.sys.
Using the Windows 7 disc I have been able to get to the System Recovery Options. It finds my install and then blue screens with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL even before it gets to finding my install.
Other BSODs I know I have seen are regarding the Ntfs.Sys and PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.
