Is there anyway to reformat a Linux partition on Windows 7? I know XP/Vista didnt recognize Linux Partitions as being a partition but 7 did as I was asked to select a partition to install on. Is there an easy way to reformat it without having to reinstall linux to uninstall back into NTFS?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a crashed Lacie network storage device, something in it's networking board is fried. It's comprised of 2 separate HDD's, both 500gig. I was afraid they were going to be stripped but it appears they hold their own complete files. I was able to look at the files through a file recovery program on Hiren's bootdisk. Said program was unable to keep file structure however. It seems theres no way to activate it to be read as a disk in windows. Computer management reads both of the disks as having 5 small partitions and a large (476gig) partition on it. No real way to look into that partition though?A couple other programs analyzed the disk and tell me it's 'linux native'. how to pull the files as well as folder structure out of it?

The problem I seem to be facing is on the "Add a new Entry Step". His secondary OS partition has a drive letter assigned to it and I do not. I've gone into computer management and have tried to assign a drive letter to either of my secondary OS's hard drive partitions and it will not let me.
All I need is the boot loader to link to my second hard drive when the second option (OS) is chosen.

/dev/sda1 ntfs (Windows 7 system reserved) 100 MB
/dev/sda2 ntfs (Windows7 C: drive) 99 GB (includes 4 GB of preloaded page file space)
/dev/sda3 ntfs (Shared drive - Windows7 E: Drive / Ubuntu sda3) 801 GB
/dev/sda4 extended partition 32 GB
/dev/sda5 ext4 (Linux Root) 30 GB
/dev/sda6 linux-swap 2 GB
I set it up so that I could access my E: drive from either the windows or ubuntu operating system. It has worked perfectly so far (about 6 months). But, here is the problem:For some reason as the share drive (my E: drive / sda3) grows Windows thinks that the windows system drive (sda2/c:drive) is also growing. So that now I have a low storage warning stating that there is only 8.76 GB of free space left on my 99 GB C: drive. When, in reality, there should be about 77 GB of free space. I've made hidden files/folders viewable and downloaded treesizefree so I know what should be on the drive. The Treesizefree output shows the expected 22 GB of space but also shows only 9 GB of free space. So, the missing space is nearly exactly the size of my shared drive (sda3/E:drive). So somehow, I think the windows OS is double counting my shared E: drive against my C: drive.
i was trying to install linux on a usb drive so i could easly have a portible computer in my pocket but when i ran the linux for the first time meaning the portible usb worked it reformatted my windows 7 ultimate and ALL the data i had on it i do need this data but i can deal without it all i need is to format my computer back to windows 7 ultimate.

I have a Gateway netbook pre-installed with Windows 7 Starter. In just 7 months it has got viruses and is full of error messages, not able to uninstall the programs causing this mess, and my web browser keeps redirecting me to alternate websites which I never typed on the address bar. I am sick and think about completely deleting the whole C disk from the Windows 7 (backup my files first) and try to replace Windows 7 with some type of free Linux OS. My netbook has no CD drive nor floppy disk drive, only USB drives. My questions are:
1. Can I really get rid of all the Windows 7 files already pre-installed?
2. Can I install and run Linux OS efficiently in my netbook?
3. How can I install Linux OS on my netbook from a USB flash drive?
i have had a startup registry file corrupt after restoring to factory defaults. this has forced me to re-install the os. my DATA partition is no longer mountable through linux but shows on the set up when i try to install to the DATA drive it states a file is corrupt on the disk that i burnt. my files are saved in a backup folder buts its 100GB ( i have no means of transferring or storing it). windows cannot repair the os: this is why im forced into a reinstall. how do i remount the partition from linux? how do i reinstall windows while keeping my files bearing in mind it does not function (assuming the above fails).

Now, I cant boot into linux, so my question is: Is it possible to add ubuntu to the windows mbr manually, and if so, how?
I have windows 7 RC, windows vista, and linux mint running in a triple boot config. I don't really want to keep linux and was planning on installing the Retail version of Windows 7 once i buy it. However, while im booted in windows, i cannot see linux at all. I can only see the Windows 7 partition (C: ) and vista partition (D: ) under Computer.
But i can see it in Disk Management
The last two partitions are for linux.
So my question is, when i decide to install windows 7, will the windows 7 install disc see those linux partitions so i can delete them while installing Windows 7? You know the utility in the Windows 7 install disc that allows u to delete, format etc. partitions.
I was messing around re-arranging hardware. Since I rarely if ever TOUCH my Linux server I decided to connect 2 printers to it rather than a Windows box - I've been messing around with all sorts of hardware and software mods lately on Windows 7 to get the optimum mix.
So Printers are now on Linux server. Samba works 100% OK etc.
Now XP SP3 / XP 64 bit edition prints just fine from the Linux box.
Print of course works just fine on Native Linux server.
Windows 7 RTM x-64 just won't print -- gives all the correct indications - can even see print preview but nothing ever gets sent to the Linux queue. For BOTH printers.
I reverted back to RC version (only takes 10 - 15 mins to restore with decent imaging package like Acronis / Ghost etc).
Worked a treat.
Windows 7 RTM x-86 works as well but X-64 just vanishes in cyberspace accross the network somewhere.
Incidentally printers work natively on Windows 7 RTM x-64 so not a driver problem per se.
Any idea of where to look -- not sure if this is a SAMBA (3.05) or Windows problem. I'm running SUSE 11.1 64 bit version. - normally has no probs with networking whatsoever.
XP works (even a VM XP running on a Windows 7 X-64 host) - but it's a bit stupid to fire up a VM whenever I need to print.
(We have other computers users in the house sharing printers - but they still are on XP for the moment. I need to get this issue fixed before upgrading their machines).

View 2 Replies View RelatedBecause Hyper-V has gained a lot of publicity lately and because I truly love the server virtualization products...i picked up a book on Hyper-V and have been reading through it and testing Hyper-V on a box under my desk.
Very first thing that caused massive grief: Trying to remotely administer Hyper V from a workstation on a Windows domain while the Hyper V server is on a workgroup is a real challenge. It took nearly an entire day to get this working and that was after using the HVRemote shortcut tool on the MSDN blogs. Now that I know how to do this, it only takes a few minutes but it sure is complicated for somebody doing it for the first time.
Next, my company does quite a lot with Linux virtual machines. From what I have seen, the only supported HyperV Linux guest OS's are SuSE and RHEL (only using emulated drivers). Of course, the emulated drivers don't provide the performance of their synthetic counterparts.
In addition, it seems that Linux guests are relegated to no smp support. So, it's 1 CPU only for any linux guest no integration services are supported, such as remote system shutdown and Time Synchronization or Heartbeat So, in closing, it's really hard to take this Hyper-V product seriously in the enterprise market with such limited support for any OS that isn't Windows. Looks like we will be sticking with VMWare ESX and ESXi for the forseeable future.

I want to make it dual bootable with Ubuntu-Linux-12.04-1. However during installation one of step i.e. "This Computer currently has Windows 7 on it. What would u like to do" the options are two 1 Erase and use the entire disk or 2. Specify partition mannualy. If I opt option 1 it will earse entire disk which I don't want to do so. I have recently installed in Acer make PC the optionwas differnt. If I go through option No. 2 I don't know about option No. 2 it requires root file system to be defined.

i have a small web server running Fedora 15 and Apache, and I have a "pictures" folder on a windows machine that I have mounted from my /etc/fstab file, with "rw" access, however when I try to use a freeware PHP script in this particular folder, it doesn't display properly (won't show subfolders).I created a new folder directly on the linux machine, and the script works fine there.
Here's the setup:D:SharedPics - windows ntfs folder, shared as \winserverpics, and this share is mounted as /var/www/html/pics with RW access (although the username/pw I supply in .smbcreds file has "full" access.) PHP script does not work here.All linux permissions show rwxr-xr-x for files and folders, and owner is "root:root"I copied all of the files/subfolders from the "pics" folder into another folder, directly located at /var/www/html/pics1. file/folder permissions are exactly the same as the pics folder. PHP script works fine here.File and share permissions on the windows machine are set for read/write/modify for "Everyone", but it seems that the samba "service" is receiving different permissions. I've checked the smb.conf file and not been able to find anything that would cause "read only" permissions.
I posted here a little less than a week ago asking how to reclaim the free space from the linux partition I deleted. Today I restarted my computer for the first time and it won't recognize win7 on my computer. Was I supposed to do something after I deleted linux? I tried using my win7 cd to see if I could boot like that, but it just wants to reinstall windows, which I would rather not do.

Before I installed mac os x on my pc, I made a backup of everything on my hard drive via Linux but I had one error of copying a file. When I successfully installed mac os x, I installed Windows 7 on my other partition also successful. But then I deleted everything on that partition and just pasted my backup there => now windows won't boot. Has anybody got a solution so I won't lose all my settings and programs?

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB 15-FA. Everything works fine on Linux but, I need to run Windows 7 for some new required work. When I load the 7 the system does not recognize the cd drive. It works fine under Linux. I have reformatted, loaded Windows 7 only etc but, it still does not work.
I assumt that the Linux made firmware changes to my cd drive that need to be reset.
