View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a crashed Lacie network storage device, something in it's networking board is fried. It's comprised of 2 separate HDD's, both 500gig. I was afraid they were going to be stripped but it appears they hold their own complete files. I was able to look at the files through a file recovery program on Hiren's bootdisk. Said program was unable to keep file structure however. It seems theres no way to activate it to be read as a disk in windows. Computer management reads both of the disks as having 5 small partitions and a large (476gig) partition on it. No real way to look into that partition though?A couple other programs analyzed the disk and tell me it's 'linux native'. how to pull the files as well as folder structure out of it?

Ever since then I have only used XP, but every time the computer starts up it goes into Grub and I have to choose to enter XP. Basically what I am looking to do is remove all traces of Mint and Grub and I suppose XP for that matter and upgrade to Windows 7. What is the best way to do that considering I have a netbook which does not have a CD/DVD drive?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to install a ubuntu distribution to my primary hard drive (along side Windows 7) and at 99% of copying files the setup reported there was not sufficient memory to install backtrack. I cannot boot back into windows 7 as the computer resets before getting past the boot screen (shows 'starting windows' as normal then the screen blacks and takes me back to BIOS). this process loops unless I select windows repair option, which does not fix the problem. The Backtrack live CD won't let me delete the new, half-installed partition, so therefore I cannot change the windows partition back to it's usual (small) size of 55GB.

I want to rid of Linux and install Windows 7 Ultimate, however the only device I have to date is a 2GB SD card as I've either lost or broken my USB's or external HDD's.. Is there a way to create a bootable SD card with a small downloadable copy of Windows and install it to the HDD? Then download a 'full' copy of Windows to install that and activate it with a key?
Otherwise I'm going to have to go out and get a USB stick. Or is there an easier way with mounting etc?
I installed windows 7 on my computer and all of my files are gone. I have been reading online that you can install an undelete program, but I'm still not sure, the other option was to take the hard drive out and connect it as a slave drive to another computer and use a undelete program on the computer. Please help me, I dont want to mess this up anymore that it is. What should I do, and can I recover the files?

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo the other day I decided that I wanted to try dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl Entertainment Notebook that already had Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed. I shrank the main (biggest) partition by 100Gigs and then installed Ubuntu 10.04 on that 100Gigs of unallocated space. All worked fine, except when I tried to boot Windows 7 from the grub menu, it would come up to the beginning Windows 7 animation and then it would crash. So, I downloaded a Windows 7 Recovery CD and tried a few of the tools there. I did not create a system recover image prior to my troubles, so I could not recover the easy way.
After that, I tried the Startup Repair tool, which did not work. I read somewhere to try that Startup Repair tool 2 or 3 times, which I did. The third time, it seemed to freeze; it was "working" for about 6 hours, at which point I decided that it was enough and shut down the PC. That was a mistake... From that point forward, I still could not boot into Windows, but also every time I tried to boot into Ubuntu, I had to perform a disk check, which always failed! After trying that a few times, I had had enough yet again and decided to just reinstall Ubuntu. The install seemed to work fine, but once I rebooted I could not boot into Ubuntu (or Windows 7). No matter what option I select from the grub menu (or if I push F11 to go into recovery partition), it gives me an error that says "Error: No such partition" and dumps me into a grub rescue prompt...
After releasing multiple bouts of turrets, I tried booting from my Ubuntu LiveUSB again (same one I installed Ubuntu with twice) and ran Gparted to look at my partitions. It only showed me the one 100Gig partition and said the remaining ~350Gigs were unallocated! So now I'm stuck with no bootable operating system (on my HD), and to top it off, HP just sent me their "official" recovery disks that are trying to reformat my HD and erase all my data...
I know there has to be a way to restore my partitions and replace the grub bootloader with the Windows 7 bootloader. At this point I don't care about Ubuntu at all. All of my data was on the Windows 7 partition (which I cannot access from Ubuntu to grab it).
I can provide any information that you need, but remember that I can only do so via either BIOS or by booting Ubuntu from the LiveUSB. I cannot access Windows 7. I also do not have a Windows 7 install disk as this was a refurbished HP laptop that I bought from Costco...
I downloaded and installed Ubuntu and sectioned off a part of my hard drive for it. I intended to have it set up to run both windows 7 and linux together and let me choose which boot disk I wanted to use at start up. Ubuntu took over and so I read through some forums online. I can now get to the Windows 7 loading screen but it freezes there. I have my install disc and was hoping someone could assist me with getting windows 7 back. I do not care if I loose Ubuntu. I am currently sitting with the Administrator: X:windowssystem32cmd.exe from the System Recovery Options Menu with my Windows 7 Disc in the tray.

I have a Gateway netbook pre-installed with Windows 7 Starter. In just 7 months it has got viruses and is full of error messages, not able to uninstall the programs causing this mess, and my web browser keeps redirecting me to alternate websites which I never typed on the address bar. I am sick and think about completely deleting the whole C disk from the Windows 7 (backup my files first) and try to replace Windows 7 with some type of free Linux OS. My netbook has no CD drive nor floppy disk drive, only USB drives. My questions are:
1. Can I really get rid of all the Windows 7 files already pre-installed?
2. Can I install and run Linux OS efficiently in my netbook?

Does Windows 7 have anything like the Linux chroot?I have an application where some of the parameters lock up the system requiring a cold boot.I appear to be one of the very rare users with this problem.I'd like to run through more parameters to give the developers more specific information about what might be causing the problems. As you can understand, hitting a param and crashing can get tedious really quickly.I'm hoping there is a process that let's me isolate the app so when it crashes I can close it gracefully rather then cold booting.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi have a small web server running Fedora 15 and Apache, and I have a "pictures" folder on a windows machine that I have mounted from my /etc/fstab file, with "rw" access, however when I try to use a freeware PHP script in this particular folder, it doesn't display properly (won't show subfolders).I created a new folder directly on the linux machine, and the script works fine there.
Here's the setup:D:SharedPics - windows ntfs folder, shared as \winserverpics, and this share is mounted as /var/www/html/pics with RW access (although the username/pw I supply in .smbcreds file has "full" access.) PHP script does not work here.All linux permissions show rwxr-xr-x for files and folders, and owner is "root:root"I copied all of the files/subfolders from the "pics" folder into another folder, directly located at /var/www/html/pics1. file/folder permissions are exactly the same as the pics folder. PHP script works fine here.File and share permissions on the windows machine are set for read/write/modify for "Everyone", but it seems that the samba "service" is receiving different permissions. I've checked the smb.conf file and not been able to find anything that would cause "read only" permissions.
I posted here a little less than a week ago asking how to reclaim the free space from the linux partition I deleted. Today I restarted my computer for the first time and it won't recognize win7 on my computer. Was I supposed to do something after I deleted linux? I tried using my win7 cd to see if I could boot like that, but it just wants to reinstall windows, which I would rather not do.

When I load the 7 the system does not recognize the cd drive. It works fine under Linux. I have reformatted, loaded Windows 7 only etc but, it still does not work.
I assumt that the Linux made firmware changes to my cd drive that need to be reset.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis may sound like a strange question, but basically what I want to do is make a DVD that's an "essential Windows reinstall kit".
I do freelance computer repair and most of the computers I have worked on have had some nasty viruses that screw up Windows to the point where it's easier to just reinstall it. Problem is, simply deleting the partition isn't enough most of the time since viruses can infect the MBR and boot sector.
My essential tools are DBAN to wipe the hard drive, GParted to make a partition that fills the drive (to avoid that stupid System Reserved nonsense) and then the Windows installation disc.
DBAN is only about 2MB and GParted is like 120, both of those should fit on a single layer DVD along with the Windows install files.
I am familiar with tools like XBoot and other Linux multiboots that use syslinux or GRUB, but the problem is that Windows 7 is a tricky bugger and will crash if you try to load it using one of those.
Anybody know if there's a way to take a Windows 7 ISO and successfully launch it from a multiboot so I can combine it with DBAN and GParted?
I would like to learn some linux and for that i need a secondary OS, I want to keep my Internal as my Windows 7 drive and that has boot priority but i want the linux to run from partition 2 (or 1) on an external HDD

And for linux at least 10 GB should be kept as unallocated space . But when i tried to shrink my C: drive then the available space for shrinking is shown to be just 39 MB which is highly insufficient. how to increase this size and install linux on my PC .
