Vista won't let me associate file type jpg with a program other than their defaults. I click on browse and select the program (PaintShop Pro), but when I return it only lets me pick one of the original defaults, not the one I browsed to. If I don't pick one of the defaults, the "OK" won't activate and I have to cancel.
All the cool icons I find on the internet seem to be in the .png form and supposedly work with/on MS systems. But whenever I try to associate one of these .png icons with a program or file the system refuses to let me. Is there some setting in Vista that I need to set in order to use these icons?
I could not open the attached pdf files in Window Mail directly from the paper clip icon drop down menu. However I can open it after saving the attachement to other folders like desktop. The error msg (simplified version): The file does not associate with a prog, set it at control panel. But the control panel setting show pdf was associated to Adobe reader 9.1.
I was installing a .msi file. I double clicked it, and my cat jumped on my keyboard. This unchecked the "always ask before opening this type of file" box, and I clicked continue, not realising until I clicked it. how do I make it ask me again? This option was from running it, off of my desktop. This is to do with Windows Installer
I have Virtual CD installed on my computer and it was handling .iso files and a very useful feature it had, it caused some options to appear in the context menu of the file (i.e. right clicking on the file) to be able to directly insert the .iso file into a virtual drive. But then I installed WinRAR and regretfully (!!!) I chose WinRAR to associate with .iso files ... and I lost those useful options in the context menu.
I can't save any type of file. I click save or save as and nothing at all happens. If I close a spreadsheet and it ask if I want to save, I can click on yes and still nothing happens. Right clicking on a picture to save as, nothing happens.
I am using Vista Home Premium 32 Bit. How do I change the file type so that it will open in the correct application? For some reason the little icon changed from the Photoshop (PSD) to the Quick Time Icon.
I have some ICO Images? the only program that opens this image is ACDSee 10? I have Adobe lightroom, photoshop, illustrator, flash and photoshop elements. Is ACDSee 10, the only program that can only open these types of images? I tried all my Adobe, but it says file type not supported?
I just accidently lost a JSP file (it's a type of file, eg., somefile.jsp) and went to Backup and Restore to recover the file. Much to my shock and horror, it looks like no JSP files were backed up, even though I have all checkboxes checked in the Backup configuration and have regularly run backup. How do I get the Backup and Restore program to backup all files types? If Backup and Restore can't do it, is there something I can load (eg., maybe the old XP Pro backup) from Microsoft?
Almost trivial but annoying! [Vista HP, Office 2002]. I have a folder containing Excel .XLS files and CSV files associated with Excel. Unfortunately, when I "Group by Type" CSV files appear under "Microsoft Excel Comma Separated Values Files", whereas XLS files are under "XLS Files". (Excel Templates are also "Microsoft Excel Template in Windows Explorer, charts are "Microsoft Excel Chart", etc. etc. i.e. XLS seems to be an exception).-I'd rather like all the Excel types to be adjacent. Looked in the registry (The reg key is at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTExcel.CSV) and under the Excel.CSV key is the "(default)" string "Microsoft Excel Comma Separated Values Files", but surprisingly there is no Excel.XLS key that I could find to modify to give Windows Explorer a common Type-string beginning. How might I assert some control over this? What and where could I change in the registry? Of course there is the vanilla .xls key, which has as (default) "Excel.Sheet.8" - if I put a new (default) under Excel.Sheet.8 with the string "Microsoft Excel XLS Files" would that work?
I don't know how this happened, but I didn't do it myself. For some reason,my Program Files directory has been changed to the Photos directory type, so it changed from the details like file type, size, etc., to rating, photo size, etc.I cannot figure out how to change the directory back to a General file folder type. The toolbar shows things like Slide Show, etc.The sub-directories are all fine and appear as a General type. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, without SP1.How do I change the folder type back to General?I can't figure out how with this single folder.
I have a large number of digital photos in HIGHMAT (.hmt) file format. I can't get them to open, now that I've moved to Vista. (WMP message is "can't open this type of file") I tried downloading the XP Highmat update, but it wouldn't install. I've looked on the net, but haven't yet found a solution. I have to find one, as these photos are business-related. Secondly, if and when I ever get them open, I'd like to change them to .jpeg. How could Ido that.
How do you associate files with the same extension to be opened by multiple programs in Vista? For example, I want .jpg files to be viewed using one program and edited in another. This was straightforward in XP but the option seems to have disappeared in Vista.
I installed a program that I didn't like. I uninstalled it, but it didn't remove it's own association with JPG and other image files. I want to reassociate them with Explorer's Preview (which is still available on the rightclick context shell menu, but unavailable on any "open with" or "default programs" dialog).
Is there any way to do this? Maybe a explorer.exe command line parameter?
im totally new to the vista forum only got it a few days ago and being a tweaker by nature i tweaked a few things everything seemed to be ok then i updated my graphics drivers all still ok but when i tried to play any game windows or otherwise i got an error message saying that the file had no program associated with it and to change it in the file association control panel (which i couldnt find) so i used system restore to rectify problem so my question is was it my tinkering that caused the problem or could it have been the drivers (which i somewhat doubt and hope it wasnt the cause as i have to update at some stage)
Using Windows Mail under Vista, I am having trouble with some file types. .pdf and .jpg files both give me an error message saying that "This file does not have a program associated ...". And yet when I go to Control Panel->File Associations, .pdf is associated with Adobe Reader and .jpg is associated with Paint. When I click on one of these file types in any other context, the association works fine.
I need a good file recovery program that will run both under Vista and Win 7. It needs to be able to salvage files both deleted and those lost because of disc errors. It also needs to be able to work with both internal and external hard discs, and all flavors of CD and DVD. Any recommendations? Most of the ones that allow you to download a trial have crippled to trial so much that it's really hard to judge them. Incidentally, I ran the free Recuva on a DVD-RW; I started it at 12:30 PM and at 5:30 AM (17 hours later) it showed 89% complete, and at 8:00 it had stopped with the message "allocation error".
I have a problem viewing e-mails from time to time. Keep getting following message. "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel." I don't know where to go to fix this problem.
About a week or so ago, I decided to upgrade my PC to Windows Vista. I gave it awhile, mostly didn't want to deal with an upgrade and all that. System has been fine on XP for years...why mess with it. But having gotten a new video card, I just wanted to be current on my OS again. As it turns out, I like Vista alot and have had little to no trouble with it. If you look at my system config, nothing is more than a year old at most, so my computer, at least for my needs is still "current." Having tried and like Vista 32bit (Home Premium) I have decided to take the next step into 64bit and that's why I am here. My system is 64 bit compatible, so I figure it's time to take full advantage of it. I have important apps I use for school for 3D that have 64bit versions I've been wanting to try, and I have 2 Gigs of RAM coming today which will make my total 4 and 64bit is the only way I can utilize it all!
I'll probably be doing the format install sometime tonight, which finally brings me to why I posted. In my research of Vista 64, I have read some blurbs about it giving youo 2 program files, Program Files and Program Files x86 (Or something.) I've also read that in some cases it can be important to make sure you install a certain program to the right one. My system has 3 physical Hard drive, that I partitioned in several total for storage, windows, programs, games, and so on. My current Program Files is a 80GB Partition all by itself. It's a different physical drive than Windows is on. Will installing applications to this drive like I have always did cause me any trouble in this new Vista 64 bit I'm about to dive into? My system will definately have a mix of 32bit and 64bit apps, with more by far probably being 32bit. Also while I think to ask, will the Vista 64 install procedure allow me to just wipe the partition my OS is currently on? Or will going to 64 bit require me to wipe the entire physical HDD? The other partitions that share the Windows INstall Partition are just storage so I don't want to format them unless I need to.
I tried to delete a template in "My Templates) in "Word". It would not go the the recyle bin as a file was opened in another program. I discovered that when I went Word I get Document 1. I then click the Office Button. Click on close and get a faded screen. Click the Office Button again and the only options are:
Open Open from Office Live Save to Office Live
Is this the open file? If it is how do I delete it?
I went to open a software disc that I just put in my drive and I moved to fast or something and clicked on the wrong option on the context menu and messed up the association to my cd/dvd rom drive. Now I cant get the drive to auto start and show the icon next to the cd drive letter. It also wont run if I double click on the drive.
I get an error that says: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. Now I have tried everything from exefix_vista.reg, inffix_vista.reg, exefix_cu.reg. I'm not new to computers, but this has me all messed up. I need to use that disc for school. I even tried putting a disc in for my router software and still get the same error. I don't know where to go from here. I've uninstalled my drive and drivers, I've checked with Vista repair, nothing works. I don't want to have to reload my OS if I can help it.
Any email that I receive that has a link in it will not go to the link. I get an error mesage that says the file does not have a program associated with it for performing the action. It says I need to "create an association in the Set Association control panel." Other times I get a pop up that says "application not found". I can't provide any more info than that. I don't know where to find the "association control panel" and when I call Windstream, my email provider, they tell me it's my computer that's screwed up and transfer me to India where I get to converse with a nice gentleman for thirty minutes and who still can't understand what I'm saying. I losing patience.
We have a access data program that we use for fiscal year like 07/01/07 - 06/30/08. I have copied the information into a new access file but the date is set for last year. Where do we go to change the date? We did not write this program. We are using windows 2000.
I had an extreme hacker attack which every virus program epicly install into my pc while I was away for 30m...after a week of failure trying to fix, I restart the computer into ordinary factory setting, everything work well till now, after the virus attack, all my program appear to said"has stopped working" now it's begining to happpen again, but this time, mostly download file, more than likely, my download file will stop suddently and said"has stopped working", I try to download java, divx, and other install file but it's all said the same thing. Running processes:
When I doubleclick a file it opens the associated program but does not load the file and will crash the program when I close it. Other file types work fine (*.xls, *.doc) when I doubleclick them. Any ideas what to look for here?
Computer Club member's Windows Vista Home Premium. The message above says it all. No .exe file will run. I have drilled down to winword.exe, and double clicked. I have clicked icons on the desktop. I have clicked programs on the start menu. In safe mode, I have downloaded a new version of Windows Installer, when Run is clicked the subject message appears.
When using Window Explorer, no .exe file has an icon associated with it! When I open Programs & Features in the Control Panel. Programs cannot be removed as the subject message appears.
When I go to open an attachment, it tells me "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." I have no idea what that means or how to find that control panel.
