CPU OC Wall, Manually Adjusting The Timings To 5-5-5-18?

Aug 6, 2008

It seems I have hit a wall on my particular CPU. I can easily get it dead stable at 3.2 GHz, with the RAM running at 1066 (rated specs) and manually adjusting the timings to 5-5-5-18, also spec. But if i start going any higher the system starts getting quirky - particularly when I resume from standby - it goes south with a BSOD. Gunter, I know you wanted pics, but let's keep it all consolidated in here and start keep it to a relative few people.

New Security Flaw Found In IE, Best Fire Up FireFox

Jan 3, 2009

If you’re using Internet Explorer to read this it might be an idea to shut it down now and open up trusty old FireFox instead. Microsoft has today issued an alert to notify users of a critical security flaw in IE.7.0 that could allow hackers to take control of your computer and steal passwords. The company is apparently preparing an emergency patch to fix it but in the meantime simply requests that users remain ‘vigilant’ against the threat.Microsoft advisors actually ask that you don’t switch because they are trying to get it resolved as soon as possible.

Of course it couldn’t be seen to recommend else’s software, but this doesn’t show much consideration for people’s security concerns. Trend Micro security advisor Rick Ferguson is free from such restraint: “In this case, hackers found the hole before Microsoft did, this is never a good thing. What we’ve seen from the exploit so far is it stealing game passwords, but it’s inevitable that it will be adapted by criminals; it’s just a question of modifying the payload the trojan installs. If users can find an alternative browser, then that’s good mitigation against the threat.” Alternative browsers FireFox, Opera, Chrome and Safari are not vulnerable to the flaw, so if you know what’s good for you best jump on one of these to be safe (most are better than IE anyway). - Paul Lester [BBC] security Internet Explorer Microsoft

I bought a laptop last Christmas and it had various pre-installed stuff that I did not want and uninstalled them. A few weeks later and I have been trying use the windows media center remote to watch tv on my Toshiba Qosimio G40.

So far I have'nt found it and I think I may of unintentionally uninstalled it. I have been to Microsoft web page and have been looking to try and download the package or drivers for Windows Media Center. Unfortunately I have not found it on their web site. I could just reinstalled the recovery disc that I came with the laptop but that would be inconvienient as I have a load of sofware and files I would have to reinstall ect after the recovery. Does any one know how I can get Windows Media Center back on my laptop without having to use the recovery cd? Is there somewhere where I can download the package again?

Apple Programs Not Uninstalled

Apr 27, 2008

Recently against my better judgement I installed iTunes on my computer so I could update my daughters iPod. Since that I have discovered programs like Bonjour and Safari which have been installed by the Apple Updater program. Some of these are in my startup group and as I use a lot of resources photo and video editing I decided to uninstall all of them. However in each case a message pops up saying "the computer administrator has set policies to prevent this installation" I have seen a lot of people complaining about
similar issues but most most of the solutions involve running programs which are not available in my version of Windows Vista, Home Premium 32-bit.

Uninstalled Usb Controllers And Rebooted

Feb 21, 2009

I recently experienced problems with the software for my Dell AIO 966 printer. On advice from the Dell NG's, I uninstalled all of my USB controllers, and rebooted in the expectation that Windows would detect and reinstall them. To a point, this was successful, but now whenever I boot my system, I get the windows "New hardware found"dialogue. Any, and I do mean ANY, mouse clicks in the dialog area at this point result in my mouse and keyboard being totally frozen.

Device Manager reports all the usual stuff, along with 2 "Unknown Device" entries. The only way I can boot my system now is to wait for the Hardware found diaalog, R-Click the taskbar, and kill the dialog from Task Manager. I usually have to kill it 3 times, at which point all is well. I've replaced the Dell printer that started this nonsense with an Epson Workforce 500, and have no printer problems. I'm obviously way over my head here folks.

Username/password After McAfee Uninstalled

Oct 24, 2009

Windows Mail worked correctly for 1 year. I did not have the "password won't

save" problem at all.

McAfee Security Center was uninstalled and debris removal was performed

because I dislike McAfee (which came installed on the the computer.)

Avast Pro was installed because I like it.

Now, I have the Windows Mail "password won't save" problem. When I look at

the Account Properties, there's nothing in the password box. When I enter

the password and click Remember Password, check email, I get the popup

requesting username password. If I enter the info there, mail is received

and can be sent. Next time, it asks for username/pw again.

I have deleted the account, closed Windows Mail, recreated the account -

same problem.

Uninstalled But Still Shows In Uninstall/install Program.

May 15, 2010

i uninstalled "Fable Lost Chapters" because it was using up space on my drive. So i uninstalled the game, half way through the uninstallation the PC lagged so i used task manager to close the uninstaller. My first mistake was right there, after when i tried to uninstall it, it said i had finished but everything was clearly still there.

So i read around the forums, and i used a force uninstaller which worked fine, except the "fable lost chapters" icon was still in the "uninstall or change program" windows, with no stats, (ie how big it is, last altered ect). Game was gone but the value was still there. So i fished around the regeditor hoping to find it, but no luck there. I have also tried using "C CLeaner" to delete the entry but it gives me this error message "Cannot delete MSI installer" no idea what that means.

Uninstalled Also Installed Tunup Utilities Reboot

Feb 16, 2009

Im using a HP Pavilion dv9700 notebook with vista 32bit OS installed. Note that when i did the following i was not connected to the internet: The problem only recently occured after i attempted ot remove Norton security centre from my computer. That uninstalled fine. I also installed tunup utilities 2009 and did a reboot. On reboot the Windows loading bar froze. This kept happening every time a did a restart. So i decided to do a system restore to resolve that problem. That resolved the freezing issue and i figured that i would have to remove internet security again and so tried to unistall it again only for it to say "The system cannot find the path specified." So Norton is now corrupt and i cant run it or uninstall it. But i decided to run registry scans and cleaned up the computer with Tuneup.

After i took the laptop back to where i can use the internet. I plugged in the Lan cable and tried to run firefox but it didnt connect. The only connection i can get is local only access. I live in University halls and i should be on the internet when i plug in the LAN cable. I have since tried a system restore to restore back to a couple of days ago but its no use. I still have the same problem. No internet and no chance of uninstalling Internet security for good. As my LAN network driver is Nvidia netwroking controller I can only assume that its the nvidia controller that is the problem. Even though windows claims there is nothing wrong with it. I have tried uninstalling the driver, but when i confirm it just closes the dialoge box and doesnt uninstall it at all. I cant rollback the driver as its not an option and although i downloaded an older version of the driver and installed it (it said that it installed?), it has no overrun the more up to date driver. I have been trying to fix this for around 6 hours now & its vital that i get back online with the computer as i have assignments due in for tuesday. (im using some one elses computer at the moment)

Desktop Icon Didn't Work Uninstalled

Apr 15, 2009

here’s one for the books!!! Shawn, I hope you’re there, I downloaded a GAOTD icon program called Desktop Icon Toy, but it didn’t work well for me, so I uninstalled it (using Programs + Features). Afterward, I did a search to see if there were any additional files left over, and there was one, (the system tray icon) which I also deleted. The icons on my Desktop reverted back to the way I originally had them, and I thought all was fine, until. . . later this evening I turned my laptop off and rebooted. Everything seemed fine except for the Desktop icons. This was something I’ve never seen before – each of the original icons had a generic icon laid over the top of it – like two layers of icons, and you could see the original icon a little bit around the edges of the generic one.

I tried right-clicking on Properties to change the icons back to what they were, but no dice. Couldn’t change them at all. Then I went to your Tutorial on deleting the icon cache, but it didn’t work. In fact, I did it twice and each time, the icon cache got larger! ( It went from 3,648kb, to 4,043kb, to 4,046kb.) I rebooted after each attempt and deleted the icon cache.db file from the Recycle Bin after each reboot. The last thing I tried was changing the Display color setting from 32 to 16 and back again. I saw the icons move slightly as the changes were occurring, but the problem didn’t get fixed. Now I’m really concerned. Have you ever heard of this happening Shawn? I have Vista 64 bit on an HP Pavillion dv5t.

Windows Update Kills Windows Mail On Windows 7

May 12, 2010

If you have installed Windows Mail on a Windows 7 computer, yesterday's update contains a KB978542 patch which changes msoe.dll so it won't run on Windows 7. I had warned about these types of issues when Win7 was first released. Microsoft claims it was done for security=20 reasons, see To get it working again, replace the new non-working copy of msoe.dll in Windows 7 with a copy of the new patched version of msoe.dll from a Vista machine.=20

Note: I ran into permissions issues when trying to delete the = non-working msoe.dll, so rather than fighting that, I renamed the Win7 Windows Mail directory to "Windows Mail-X", then I copied and pasted the Windows Mail directory from the Vista machine. I suspect that Windows Mail will = become less and less compatible with Win7 as time goes along.=20
