Screen Saver To Black Unresponsive Screen

May 2, 2009

I am having a very wierd issue with vista's screen saver. So basically when I leave the comp idle it goes into screen saver then turns off the monitor after 15 mins. Sometimes, more often than not, I come back and move the mouse and hit a few keys on the keyboard and nothing. The monitor wont come out of standby I try turning it off and back on, and nothing. I have the latest drivers for everything in my system and I checked the power management settings and they both are able to wake the computer up. I have a G15 keyboard and I keep the leds on and when this happens the leds are off and the lazer for the mouse is off too.

Machine Becomes Unresponsive

Oct 12, 2009

HP Pavillion DV7 Notebook PC

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9000 at 2GHz (64-bit)

6.00 GB RAM

64-bit Vista Home Premium SP1

I am a computer application programmer and have a lot of experience with XP, but mostly as a user. This is my first Vista machine and I have little experience with Vista, but I can find my way around it...eventually. (I'm used to finding configuration options in XP and have to search a little to find the equivalent option in Vista.) Quite frequently, when I am using my machine, it goes into an "unresponsive" or "thrashing" state. By this I mean the hard drive light goes on continuously, and some or all all runnin applications become unresponsive (they don't respond to clicks and keypresses, eventually showing "Not Responding" in the title bar). Usually Explorer and the task bar and start menu remain functional but sometimes I get the spinning ring of death. Control-Alt-Delete causes the screen to go black for a few minutes before the prompt comes up.Sometimes this happens with the Task Manager open. Sometimes Task Manager becomes unresponsive too, but when it doesn't it appears to show only 30% processor usage, and only about 2Gb of RAM are in use.The most frequent program I use when not programming is Windows Live Mail, and the problem seems to crop up when I'm reading and browsing e-mails, and Windows Live Mail seems to be the first to exhibit the problems, but that's probably coincidence. No error messages. Is there a system log that I should be looking at? Sometimes in Task Manager I've seen WERfault.exe running - does this mean a background process is crashing? How can I get more info on that?

The problem started soon after I got the machine. The first time it cropped up, I turned off SuperFetch and the problem seemed to disappear for a few days, but after a windows update, the problem returned just as bad as before.

The machine never totally hangs -- if I wait around for a few minutes, eventually it finishes whatever was tying it up and all applications become responsive again. But this occurs quite frequently, 5-10 times per hour, and thus it is very hard to get work done.

Sidebar Works, But Unresponsive

Dec 29, 2008

I'm running Home Premium x64. The build is only ~1month old and previously the sidebar was working fine. Apparently I've fouled something up. The sidebar loads fine, runs fine, looks fine. Here is the problem; Gadgets like Pro Weather, or Hermes, where the user has the option of opening up a larger screen to the left of the gadget.. those screens are unresponsive.

For example in the weather app, I click the little arrow to expand the gadget, it brings up the larger window with options to view the radar, or nightly forecasts, or moon phases etc, but my clicking ANYWHERE on that screen is unresponsive.. it just doesn't work. I thought maybe it was the weather app, but then noticed the same thing on Hermes. Hermes is a news ticker. When you hover over a story it brings up the full story in a pane to the left, with clickable links for the actual web story. Again, all mouse input in this pane seems to be restricted, and the links do not work.

I don't recall the exact moment when I lost control of this. Over the past few weeks I have installed / uninstalled Norton AV, and used a utility called 'Vista Manager'. Currently I am running no AV. The Vista Manager program is pretty neat actually. I didn't make any kind of drastic changes with it, but thats not to say it isn't someone related. Maybe it stopped a required service or something? Who Knows.

Blackscreen Unresponsive Mouse And Keyboard

Mar 8, 2009

I have been trouble shooting an issue since the purchase of my new pc. In a nutshell my pc locks up (defined as still on but a black screen and unresponsive to mouse or keyboard forcing a hard boot) quite often especially when doing the following: attempting to launch Windows Media Center. This action most consistently creates the lock up (virtually every time) switching users installing a program or really doing anything that would require admin permission shutting down launching some other programs It is not unusual to have to hard boot a dozen or more times a day. I have hit the boards, googled the issue etc and found numerours others that have experienced the same problem. I had a thread on this board in which I had been attributing it to my ATI 4870 begin video card drivers as the problems did not begin until the drivers were installed. That thread ended with indication that it likely was not those drivers.

I just finished reseating the memory (again), swapping the memory slots etc to no avail. I then removed one of the two OCZ Gold 2GB 1600 DDR3 sticks and booted with only one. Lo and behold - the issues disappear. Thinking it might be a bad memory stick (one that slipped past the dozen or so times I ran memtest86+) I swapped in the other to confirm. Well - turns out it ran fine with the other alone as well. Guess it is not a bad memory stick. Now thinking it is a bad slot on the mobo I tried swapping each into other slots but all continue work correctly.Bottom line, I am baffled. How is it that one 2GB memory stick will be fine in any slot but two will begin to create the issues?

Computer Turns Off At Loading Screen

Feb 22, 2009

For about 1-2 years my computer ran fine until recently. Now, whenever I start up my computer it boots all the way to the Vista loading screen, seems as if it loads all the way, then shuts down with no warning. This happens at the same point every time. I tried putting in the Vista DVD and starting that up in an attempt to reinstall or repair Vista, but I get the same results on the same loading screen. The computer is custom built by myself.

Specs:

ECS GeFORCE 6100SM-M mobo
BFG Nvidia 8800 GTX
OCZ PC6400 2GB 800MHZ (Dual Channel)

Computer Stuck At Update Screen

Mar 16, 2010

My computer is stuck at the windows update screen when I boot it up. A week or so ago I had some trouble installing a program. Looking for a solution, eventually I found that my windows hadn't been updating for several months. Trying to update manually didn't work and I got an error message. Googling that error message was what brought me to vistax64.com in the first place, and after reading around a bit I managed to determine that I was missing my Windows Update Module (unsure about the exact name). I followed a tutorial that led me into regedit to delete some keys. Now, to the matter at hand: after deleting these keys and restarting, my windows got stuck at the update screen. It says something like: "Configuring update 3 of 3 - 0% Do not turn off or bla bla bla" for a few minutes, without the percentage changing, then restarts. Problem is, when it restarts it displays the exact same message and does the same thing all over again. So it gets caught in a restart loop. I have tried booting from my Vista DVD and have tried the startup repair thing, but that isn't any help. I don't have any save points to restore from, nor a backup. So - the question is: Is there anything I can do about this without having to format and reinstall Windows?

Blue Screen Stop Messages, Halt Computer

Jun 11, 2008

I've been getting a lot of blue screen stop messages that halt mycomputer. About 2 weeks ago this was happening once a day. It became more frequent until yesterday it was happening every time I tried to boot up during the boot process. Last night, I finally copied off all of my files, formatted the hard drive, and installed a new copy of Vista Premium. Believe it or not, I still have the same problem - although now I can boot up and get some work done before a crash happens.

This is a Sony Vaio laptop with 1.25 gigs of ram and a 70 gig hard drive. The error messages are always different. I didn't write any of them down, but they are like "Subset not less than zero" and "Page fault in non-paging area" and "IQL server not found" (I'm sure these aren't right, but you get the idea). So, how could this be happening on a clean and formatted hard drive with a brand new operating system? Is the problem in the BIOS or the motherboard or somewhere else?

Iv also tried last known good configuration but that didnt work either. ctrl + alt + delete doesn't work either. iv tried doing a clean install and using the windows diagnostics and recovery toolset version 6. but they havnt worked either after the loading files bar the KSOD comes back again, it is like the computer cannot read the discs or it wont boot from them.

Star Computer Without An External Monitor, The Screen Just Blurrs Completely

Apr 6, 2010

I have a Dell XPS M1710 notebook and just yesterday it started throwing bad fits at me. First of all, if I start my computer without an external monitor, the screen just blurrs completely and I have to shut it down. With the monitor, nothing happens, but I dont think its a laptop any more if it does this thing. That partially fixed, I too have the SVCHOST problem. I used the svchost analyzer and Security Task Manager, but all they show me is that I have around 7 Svchost processes and they only use 10-15% of CPU. Its very peculiar because I NEVER had this before and I have my laptop for around 3 years. Checked all instances, every svchost is in the Windows System folder, so I ruled out a svchost virus. However, even when I shut down almost everything else, still 90-100% CPU. I just cant understand it.

After Computer Wakes, Mouse Stop Working And Screen Frozen

Aug 7, 2009

Everytime I return to work after putting computer to sleep, the computer wakes up without no problem. But once I move the mouse, a shadowed box appeared. With the moment of the mouse, the size of that box enlarges or shrinks. If I click on the mouse, that box disappeared but then a window [View/Sort by/Refresh/NVIDIA Control Panel/New/Personalize] opens. I close this window, only to find the pointer of mouse stop working and the screen is frozen. For now I solve the problem by two ways described below, but it is very annoying to have to do it everytime I return to work from Sleep.

1.I open Task Manager, do nothing, and close it.

2.I right click the mouse on desktop, change the size of Icons. Repeat this action one more time.

/W2000 Ethernet Connection, Directory Trees Did Not Change On Either Computer's Screen?

Mar 26, 2008

I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit on a new computer, and Windows 2000/pro on a much older (8 years?) computer. I have no difficulty transferring files from one to the other using flash memory units. Both systems are running fine. I was told, by a not always reliable person, that I can simply plug either a regular ethernet cable, or a crossover ethernet cable, into each computer and each will immediately recognize the other, and each will show up on the other's Window Explorer windows. Then, I'm told, I could drag and drop files from one computer to the other with a click of a mouse on either computer.

So, I tried it. Purchased a new crossover ethernet cable, plugged it in, and no visible response. No sparks, no smoke - nothing. Directory trees did not change on either computer's screen. The person who told me this would work doesn't "have time to check into it right now."

1. Is it likely that I caused any damage to either computer? Both continue to work as well as they ever did, so I don't think so.

2. Is it possible to connect the two computers together, via such an ethernet cable, and have them behave as I had been told?

3. If the answer to question 2 is yes, what else must I do besides plug in the cable?

Computer Shuts Down: Run CHKDSK /F And Check For Hard Drive Corruption And Then Restart Your Computer"

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"

Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........
