Back in the days when I used XP there was a registry altering utility called xp_balloontips.vbs. Running this useful utility managed to get rid of most of XP's annoying balloon tips that come up on mouse rollover. Does anyone know if there is anything similar for Vista?

When typing in a file or folder name, type in part of the name and then hit the TAB key to bring up matches. Use SHIFTÂ +TAB to go the other direction.
When searching for a file, type in dir part_of_filename* to look for the file in the folder. To search sub directories as well, append the /s flag as well. Example: dir exp* /s
Use the up arrow to go back over past commands. Alternatively you can hit F7 and go directly to the command ......

Win 7 compatible - have used this and deleted all 1200 entries it found. It makes a backup - been running for several hours and reboots with no probs. Also working fine so far on my Vista x64 and Win 7 x86 installs. After cleaning you need to shut the app. and reopen it for it to find it's backups. (Easy to find them by hand - it can compress them to.7z files, too ). Have used their regdefrag a lot - identical scans and results to the Auslogics and Glary versions- so use whichever defragger you already have. WARNING: not recommended to defrag registry across drives.

I can do a scan, clean up all the errors and then shut down and start up and I have a new 20 registry error list and most or all of the errors relate to "bad path for the value" and its windows files that seem to be at fault. I don't understand why Microsoft operating system would create registry errors on a startup, before anything has been installed etc. is RegistryBooster misleading me or what. I am running win7 but it did the same thing on vista home premium so I think the question is valid for this group.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have something really strange happening here i have this prog and it says a file or one of its dependancies is missing its called FUSIONButtons.ocx so i looked around and several sites have it but every time i try to download it i get an error. ive tried several sites and some of them were rar files and when i extract it nothing shows. so a friend of mine has the same software with the same problem and got the ocx file no problem and tried to send it to me over msn every time there was an error most of the errors were cannot read source file or filer no longer exists the rars gave no error and was inside when i looked but if i extract here nothing appears. I have 2 computers one with XP sp2 and another with vista ultimate x64 and ive tried a bunch of sites and several friends who have the file on both computers and its always the same thing. The last thing we tried was to rar the whole prog with the need file included and when i got it that 1 file had disappeared or would not show on my systems. I turned off all my firewalls and antivirus, i must add that the first time i tried to get it nod removed the file so i shut nod off and i also went in and set folder options to show all hidden files. I also tried putting the whole rared prog on a flash drive and extracted it on the flash then tried to run the prog from the flash but same thing. Can someone pls explain this wierd thing thats going on here its driving me insane !! i must also add that this is not happening with any other files now or any other file i can rememeber

View 4 Replies View RelatedThere's a file on my D drive called ntldr. I understand that this is a vital part of windows, however this file is on a hard drive which windows ISN'T installed on now. Windows XP used to be on this drive about 2 years ago but when i got a new hard drive back then, i installed windows on that (C) new hard drive (and have since installed Vista on) and removed it from the one which is now D drive. Since this is not the HD which houses my OS, can i delete ntldr? UPDATE: and ntdetect.com as well.

There's a folder in the my documents folder called searches. There are numerous sub folders under it and, together, they contain 5300 items taking roughly 39 GB of space on my drive. There was an error when I tried to do this ox81000008 which informs me that I must use the Sytem File Checker. I have opened up a command prompt to and typed in sfc /scannow
However it won't run and I'm being informed "You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility". I am the only person that uses my PC and my profile has full administration. how I might be able to successfully backup my files?
I'm not able to make the check disk utility work. I have Vista Ultimate and
have tried rescheduling by right clicking the C drive and tools method and via the chkdsk/f method and disk check utility never executes. I also tried disabling my virus checker, AVG Free, but achieve the same results.

When I do and try to run it my computer tells my permission has been denied and it says there is a VBScript runtime error. First and foremost create a Recovery Disc and keep it safe and do not switch off the System Recovery utility. Do not remove the bloatware came with your PC unless you are desperate for space in your Hard disc,if and when you remove them do it one by one monitoring the response of the PC. If you couldn't get SP1,don't loose your sleep over it because it is not for the benefit of the user and it is designed to stop the user using other free third party softwares and tools(in my opinion anyway and remember I am not an expert).
Do not rely solely on the advices and do your own research as well because these so called advisers haven't provided me with tangible proof of their competence. Most of them hail vista as the best but wouldn't say why. If you ask any questions,they will blame you first for not asking the question properly and point you to a website to learn how to ask questions. Then they will request the third party software details and blame them. Now the turn of your hardware incompatibility which creates the problem. When everything fails they will accuse you of being an Ubuntu user. I suspect these so called experts use Ubuntu or some thing and pretend to be Vista experts and trying to damage the image of Vista. However,there are many helpful sites available and one of them is: www.vistax64.com If you do the basic housekeeping maintenance you will do fine.
