a while back I was sent an email by Microsoft telling me about some software that would basically lock you compter so that you could use it but not make any changes to it...it looked like it was aimed at public libraries...

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a new computer with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have noticed that there is a lot of software programs to make your computer run better or faster. Take for instance to update yur drivers. There are numerous software programs out there. I ran two programs which show the same drivers that I should update. ATA controller and NVIDIA Graphic card. Before oking the update I then went into Device Manager and checked these drivers. First off there were no exclamination marks showing me that any device needed attention.
I then clicked on the each driver and ran update driver. Each driver came back stating no driver update was needed. No update needed, but these 2 programs stated the drivers needed to be update. My question is, "How good are these programs! Are they really necessary or are they ripping off the customer.
i'm experimenting an issue since i bought ir i can't put to sleep my commputer! could you believe it? but not ever, sometimes sleeps well, but others when i select sleep, the computers go to sleep but in a second start again, also i don't know if here is something like hibernate, like XP, if it's the option i don't find it yet. my power options sayd that the power botton is the one that active the hibernation, but when i press the power botton, the laptop go to sleep and sometimes wake up again. I have the SP! and the automatic updates, and my problem isn't solved
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have something really strange happening here i have this prog and it says a file or one of its dependancies is missing its called FUSIONButtons.ocx so i looked around and several sites have it but every time i try to download it i get an error. ive tried several sites and some of them were rar files and when i extract it nothing shows. so a friend of mine has the same software with the same problem and got the ocx file no problem and tried to send it to me over msn every time there was an error most of the errors were cannot read source file or filer no longer exists the rars gave no error and was inside when i looked but if i extract here nothing appears. I have 2 computers one with XP sp2 and another with vista ultimate x64 and ive tried a bunch of sites and several friends who have the file on both computers and its always the same thing. The last thing we tried was to rar the whole prog with the need file included and when i got it that 1 file had disappeared or would not show on my systems. I turned off all my firewalls and antivirus, i must add that the first time i tried to get it nod removed the file so i shut nod off and i also went in and set folder options to show all hidden files. I also tried putting the whole rared prog on a flash drive and extracted it on the flash then tried to run the prog from the flash but same thing. Can someone pls explain this wierd thing thats going on here its driving me insane !! i must also add that this is not happening with any other files now or any other file i can rememeber

View 4 Replies View RelatedThere's a file on my D drive called ntldr. I understand that this is a vital part of windows, however this file is on a hard drive which windows ISN'T installed on now. Windows XP used to be on this drive about 2 years ago but when i got a new hard drive back then, i installed windows on that (C) new hard drive (and have since installed Vista on) and removed it from the one which is now D drive. Since this is not the HD which houses my OS, can i delete ntldr? UPDATE: and ntdetect.com as well.

However, when I run the setup.exe I get a Windows installer error 1619. I'm running Vista Business SP1 x86 and I'm logging in to the desktop with an admin account. Updating the Windows installer to version 4.5 didn't.

The Go-News menu function in Outlook 2007 on Vista Home Premium SP1 will NOT call any other newsreader other than Windows Mail, even when the other news reader is set as default.(Ie it opens when external news links are clicked).This is in direct contradiction to Outlook 2007 on XP.
Back in the days when I used XP there was a registry altering utility called xp_balloontips.vbs. Running this useful utility managed to get rid of most of XP's annoying balloon tips that come up on mouse rollover. Does anyone know if there is anything similar for Vista?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI lock up often... randomly. To unlock, I have to activate task manager and then click "look for solution" which re-starts IE losing in the process whatever work I am doing.
I have run antivirus many times and found none (Window defender, Norton and McAfee), I ran (twice) SFC /scannow and did not find corrupted files, I have run diagnostic hard drive and memory test more than twice and passed all each time.
What's the reason for these frequent lock ups? How do I correct this problem?
Is there any other way to lock vista without going into start menu and clicking on lock this computer, as i want to have it assigned to a multimedia key on my keyboard.
Like there a sleep button on my keyboard, but when i use it, it sleeps, dissconecting me from the net and etc so my downloads will stop.
Just want to be able to have a key that when i press it will just lock the screen of my pc and thats all.
I had this horrible problem of my KB (NUMlock) light staying on after my PC (Vista Ultimate 86x SP1) was completely shut down.
My KB was plugged into the PS2 port. After I took out the PS2 adapter and plugged the cable into a USB port the problem was fixed.
Anyone tell me how to restrict a user on Vista Business to only run one single program? I'm talking no control panel, no search, nothing except my program, log off, shutdown, and restart. Have basically gotten all programs taken off the start menu and am stuck. Need to disable the access to the user account and the search box.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI built two of these systems around may2008, one for me and one for my wife. The only difference between the two is she has 2 sticks of ram (I have 4 but same memory) and her video card is different (EVGA 640-P2-N829-CR GeForce 8800 GTS SSC Edition 640MB). From the get go we both had problems with usb devices not waking up after sleep mode. That was fixed by using a usb to ps2 adapter.
Over the course of the past few weeks both of the systems were freezing (locking up might be a better word since everything stops working mouse, keyboard etc etc) and a hard boot was the only way out of it. This seemed to occur around the same time as the latest vista security update (possibly a coincedance). This week the problem persisted for both pc's and then wednesday night when my wife's went down she hard booted to find that her registry was corrupted (I'm guessing this happened as a result of the hard boot) she put in her windows disk to repair the error only to find that the kernel was then corrupted as well. Windows seemed to fix the kernel problem during repair and she was able to use her system all day the next day with only a minor freeze untill vista installed the update again at which time her pc became hosed once again on reboot..........
There are some icons on the task bar I would like to delete, Caps Lock Off and Scrowl Lock Off.

The notebook itself is about 14 months old, but was only running for about 3 before it began giving him problems. He shelved it and bought a new one, and recently offered it to me if I could get it running..but post 12 month warrenty and lack of startup/backup discs is giving me hell. Before transferring I had set up a password on the laptop, then after I used the Easy Transfer it was still asking for a password however it will not accept the password I set up on the laptop & there was never any password set up on the XP PC. The lock ups occur with a fresh install (with no other software installed), and sp1 has no effect. The starnge thing is XP (both x64 and x32) work perfectly fine. Where would I be able to get support for this bug (I have Vista x64 Ultimate OEM).

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with the arrow next to the lock button. Half of it is missing. The only thing i have found was a reg hack to remove the lock button to allow more room for the arrow. The reg change did not work and messed up my mouse and keyboard along with no sound from media player. A system restore fixed everything. Has anyone had this problem with the arrow? See attachment.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIve had a strange problem happen twice now. Ive installed Vista on many PC's, but the last two i have done have caused problems. They are new builds with fresh harddrives (SATA). Everything is going fine and Vista installs without problems. When i deliver the pc's to my clients i pop their old HDD and put it either in an external HDD caddy or on an IDE cable. I try and copy some files across (documents / photos) from then on i have problems. The PC's lock up when trying to access programs etc. Vista takes ages too boot up etc.
