Had to do a rebuild on my pc, before rebuild, on power settings option I could set timeout for screen and put the computer to sleep. After the rebuild Put the computer to sleep is greyed out and will take no changes. PC is on a domain, I am an admin, yet it keeps saying it may be a group policy, but Dammit I'm an admin.
I know this question keeps coming up but I have yet to find a solution. Basically my Vista screensavers reset to nothing everytime I reboot my machine. I can preview them, I can set a time and it works once I "apply" it. But as soon as I turn off the machine and then reboot it has reset to nothing, and I have to set it again to get it to work. This is quite annoying. I do not have any wireless devices installed, and all of my Power Managment options are turned off as well.
Is there a definitive description of the Vista Power Management options? Something like a system adminstrator description of all the options and what affect each change will have.
i can't modify my power settings. When i try to change my power plan settings it says that my power plan info isnt available. I then go to the FAQ part and it says "If your computer is part of a network at an organization—such as a school, government agency, or business—your organization's system administrator might have made certain settings unavailable or even removed them by using Group Policy. Group Policy is a feature of Windows that lets system administrators manage users' access to Windows features. If you think that Group Policy is preventing you from changing a setting that you need to access, contact your system administrator."
I have NO idea what this means.. this is my personal computer and is not part of any newtworks. I then tried to change my account type to "standard user" so i could fix the problem, but my computer won't let me. I even created a new user account and made that one a standard user but it didn't fix the probelm. How do i gain access to my power plan so i can modify it?
My Windows Vista isn't letting me adjust my power settings. Here is what the problem:
1. I click the battery icon in the bottom right of the start bar. Then I lick "More Power Options"
2. On the left panel of Power Options window, I click "Choose when to turn off the display" My computer tells me "Your power plan information isn't available" with a red X next to it. The same thing happens when I try to adjust any other power setting as well.
3. I click on the "Why can't Windows retrieve this information?" and it says stuff about my system administrator making changes, and that doesn't apply to me. I am the only user of the computer and my account is the administrator. I've never tinkered with any of these files to my memory................
I have a very annoying problem with my Intel DG45ID motherboard. I am noticing that my Vista power configuration setting are changing automatically! I will set my monitor to go to standby after 20-minutes and for the computer to go to sleep after 30-minutes of idle activity. Everything is fine for a week or two, then suddenly I notice that they are both set to "Never". Anybody have this issue? Alternately, is there some sort of log that I can look at to see what might have changed these settings?
I have a home server running WinXP that goes to sleep and takes 3 or 4 seconds to wake up when accessed over the network. Vista never waits for it wake up. It times out almost immediately and even worse seems to "cache" the timeout for several minutes. So even though the server is up and ready, Vista still says it's not available. This only happens when using Vista. Is there any way to make Vista try a little harder and not be so quick to give up?
I have Vista set to sleep after 1 hour, and then hibernate on the 2nd hour. That works fine, and it comes of of sleep & hibernation just fine, as well. I have Vista set to ask for a password when it comes out of hibernation. However, upon coming out of hibernation, it displays the password screen for all of 10-20 seconds. If I don't put in my password in that amount of time, Vista goes back into hibernation mode.

What I would like is to be able to tell Vista to wait a longer than just a handful of seconds before dropping back into hibernation.
My laptop is running on Vista Business 32bit with Firefox 3.0.3 installed and connected to a Belkin wireless router. Whenever I try to open certain sites FF, 50-80% of it will get network timeout. Moreover, sites like Facebook will take ages to load and stuck at Connecting to static.ak.fbcdn.ne
My Box is an AMD 2400 + 1.50 GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM double boot on seperate Hard Drives Windows XP and Windows Vista Ultimate. All functions perfectly on XP, however ON VISTA all mail clients (Windows Mail, Outlook, Opera, Mozilla Seamonkey Mail and Thunderbird refuse to receive or send Mailand inform me connection to server timed out.
Thinking it might be my Norton Internet Security Vista, i uninstalled it and installed Avast! 4 instead or maybe the Windows Firewall which I stopped. Nothing seems to work, I have searched in Google and on this forum and Windows Vista Forums and can find no similar problem. I have now reinstalled Vista times on a clean boot with no success. Please note All browsers function fine and I can surf with all of them.
I've got everything up and running with my Vista x64 pc (finally!) and I wanted to put my pictures/videos/music on it. I plugged in my 1tb (WD MyBook Essential 2.0, powered separately from pc) external hdd and heard the "beep" or whatever that sound is that Windows makes when it acknowledges a USB device. However, when I tried to open up "Computer" it froze (just that window, not the whole pc) and I realized it was still registering the drive. I have to wait about 10 minutes before I can actually pull up the contents of the drive. Every time I plug it back in it does the same thing. This DOES NOT happen on any of the 3 or 4 XP machines I have plugged this into...it is immediately recognized and I can view the contents instantly. When it comes to transferring files, it is VERY slow (approx. 2mbps) and in some cases, it won't let me transfer the file because it says the file/folder is corrupt. But if I plug it into my XP machine, the file/folder is fine and I can view or open it no problem.
I tried using a SanDisk 4gb flash drive to make sure it wasn't just my drive. It recognized this no problem (Windows made the "beep") and I could view the contents instantly, but I when I try to transfer files, it starts out fast (approx. 30mbps) then slows down, freezes, and eventually "loses" the drive. It says it can no longer find the drive. When I go to unplug it, I notice the flash drive's light is off and when I unplug it, I hear the Windows "beep" acknowledging that it was unplugged. I've updated all drivers I can find and the BIOS to 1101 and nothing has fixed this problem. It's very annoying that there are no USB specific drivers for this board.
error message with incomplete email upload I am using Windows mail with Vista ultimate set up for an upgraded Yahoo! mail account which uses SMTP for outgoing messages. I can send up to a 20Meg attachment from the Yahoo! site. If I send a message having a 15Meg attachment, or smaller through Windows Mail it doesn't complete uploading. I use Verizon DSL.

Im working on Compaq something tower. Doing a favor for the mother in law. This tower is her co-workers and asked if I could look at it. At first glance, all the internal cables and wired are firmly attached. So I direct my attention to the power source, It is equipped with a green led light (to tell its getting power I assume). This little green light is not lighting up when plugged in. Its doing nothing. Power source model is a Bestec ATX-250-12z
i have an hp laptop running vista home premium. Well my girl hit the power button to put it into hibernation, she said it didnt do anything. Then she went to the start menu and put it into hibernate from there. now the pc will not power on, it is showing no signs of power whatsoever. I Kept Installing Ubuntu And Windows All The Time Every Day All Day And All Night. Just FYI. Once I Powered Off The Computer. Just FYI. I Didn't Know How To Power It Up. Just FYI. I Had To Have My Dad, Who Used To Work As A Janitor At The FBI To Help Me. Just FYI. My Dad Showed Me Where The Power Switch Is. Just FYI. Dad Said To Make Sure Not To Put A Drink In The Cup Holder In The Front Of The PC.
Is there a way to tune down Vista's hunger for RAM and GPU power? I could play Counter Strike: Source better on my laptop which had a single core AMD Turion 1.8ghz cpu, 1gig ram and X1600 gpu than my brand-spanking new Asus laptop which has a 2.4ghz core 2 duo, 2gig of ram and ATI HD 3470. This is just plain ridiculous that a newer laptop and newer software give me WORSE performance for a relatively old game. And it just isn't CS:S that's a problem either. Startup and shutdown time is WAY too long
my freind advised me to come here with my problem before i phoned the manufacturer to see. basicaly iv had my laptop for 2 months now so its rather new running Vista home edition, im having troubles when the Ac/DC cable is plugged in the light on the front flashes saying it is charging but it still loses power at a fast rate. it also wont start charging unless i fiddle with the power cable for 5-10 mins. i know it cant be the cable itself coz i bought a new charger.
When I tried reload the windows, It would not start and only show: Please do not Power off or unplug your machine Installing Update 3 of 5 (Or Installing 5 of 5). If not, where i can i get a power supply that is about 450W-500W that will fit into my Dell 531s?
I'm wanting to put my computer in hibernate and I click on the start menue but the option is no longer there. I have the option to sleep, shut down, lock and so on but no longer have hibernate. Whats up with that ? Does anyone have a clue?
I have tried to format my computer, first I tried by just inserting the disc, no luck, then I tried booting it from the disc, no luck then I tried going into computer management right clicking my c drive but the format option is no available. I have evn tried phoneing Microsoft but they want $80.00. Finally I thought I would format it by using my XP disc, installing XP and then upgrading to put vista back on the system but it won't let me do that either.
