Vista Power Configuration Settings Are Changing On Their Own!

Sep 23, 2008

I have a very annoying problem with my Intel DG45ID motherboard. I am noticing that my Vista power configuration setting are changing automatically! I will set my monitor to go to standby after 20-minutes and for the computer to go to sleep after 30-minutes of idle activity. Everything is fine for a week or two, then suddenly I notice that they are both set to "Never". Anybody have this issue? Alternately, is there some sort of log that I can look at to see what might have changed these settings?

Mail Settings Changing By Themselves

Feb 26, 2009

I have setup a friends vista mail to authenticate via pacbell.net's servers for outgoing mail. All works well for a few days, then stops working. Upon re examination of the mail settings, the smtp port has reverted to 25 (set manually to 460 something) and the use ssl checkbox is unchecked. I have showed my friend how to re-set the settings so he is not losing much sleep over this one, but it annoys me.

Can't Modify Power Settings

Aug 5, 2008

i can't modify my power settings. When i try to change my power plan settings it says that my power plan info isnt available. I then go to the FAQ part and it says "If your computer is part of a network at an organization—such as a school, government agency, or business—your organization's system administrator might have made certain settings unavailable or even removed them by using Group Policy. Group Policy is a feature of Windows that lets system administrators manage users' access to Windows features. If you think that Group Policy is preventing you from changing a setting that you need to access, contact your system administrator."

I have NO idea what this means.. this is my personal computer and is not part of any newtworks. I then tried to change my account type to "standard user" so i could fix the problem, but my computer won't let me. I even created a new user account and made that one a standard user but it didn't fix the probelm. How do i gain access to my power plan so i can modify it?

Unable To Adjust My Power Settings

May 16, 2010

My Windows Vista isn't letting me adjust my power settings. Here is what the problem:

1. I click the battery icon in the bottom right of the start bar. Then I lick "More Power Options"

2. On the left panel of Power Options window, I click "Choose when to turn off the display" My computer tells me "Your power plan information isn't available" with a red X next to it. The same thing happens when I try to adjust any other power setting as well.

3. I click on the "Why can't Windows retrieve this information?" and it says stuff about my system administrator making changes, and that doesn't apply to me. I am the only user of the computer and my account is the administrator. I've never tinkered with any of these files to my memory................

Finding Configuration File For Windows Vista

Jan 11, 2009

I was messing around trying to install another OS which didn't install right and doesn't work and I seemed to erase the windows vista bootloader. So I try using the windows vista recovery disc to repair windows but it does not show up in operating system list in the recovery disc so I click on the option that says to click if your operating system does not show up on the list and it brings me to this file explorer and requests a configuration file in order to view vista. So could you please tell me what configuration file is the one I need and where I could find it on my hard drive since windows is still intact on it, only the bootloader is gone.

Power Outage, VISTA Wont Boots

Mar 23, 2008

There was a power outage, then when I turned the computer on, VISTA boots but never completely. I end up with a grey screen with the mouse arrow and nothing to point at. I tried to do a repair using the installation DVD, it tells me that" "Your computer is running a limited diagnostic state. If you use System Restore in teh limited state, you can not undo the restore operation. Help topic are not available in this state". I do not want to do a new installation and loose my files and have to install and register everything again. It has been doing that since 1:30pm and still nothing.

Processor Power Management Works In Vista?

Mar 23, 2009

After reading multiple articles on various site regarding how the processor power management works in Vista, I have yet to find a resolution to my current situation. I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit on my HP Pavilion tx 2110 with an AMD X2 Mobile Tech TL-62 2.1Ghz and 3gb of RAM. Whenever my laptop is unplugged from the wall and running on the battery, Vista seems to limit the processor frequency to 38% of the max (roughly 800mhz) no mater the power plan or processor load. While the computer is plugged in however, everything runs beautifully with the frequency at 100%.

Vista Home Premium 64bit Low Power Shutdown Icon

For some reason, the laptop I just bought (Gateway FX P-7805u) will not remain shutdown if the Ethernet cable is still plugged in, and will turn itself back on. Sometimes it's immediately after shutdown, sometimes it's a few minutes later. I am actually pressing shutdown (not the "low power" option button, that looks very similar to the shutdown icon, located next to the Lock button in the Start Menu).

Vista With Personalized Settings Not Responding

Feb 19, 2009

I have windows vista on a laptop. I went to shut it down last night but it seems it was doing an update and I didn't realize it. So when I restarted it, it now comes up with a personalized settings(not responding) message in upper left corner. I can access hard drive and windows task manager. Is there somewhere a backup is located to restore this? Or some how do a system restore? The only discs I have are the Toshiba recovery discs but I don't want to use them as they say they will reformat hard drive and I will lose all info. I saw a regback folder on the hard drive. Would that have something in it?

Transfer Settings To A Vista Clean Install.

Mar 23, 2008

I am at the point where my XP Pro install is probably due a good blowing away and re-installing. I am aware that just upgrading XP Pro to Vista will be very time consuming (took well over 3 hours when I went from my original XP pro to the first release about a year ago and lots of stuff was messed up and I ended up reformatting and starting again with a clean install). This is my conceptual plan:

* This time I want to back up my settings with the "file & settings transfer
wizard" on the XP box to one of my server shares.

* Back up all my important document stuff to the server.

* Then I will format everything on my PC and clean install Vista Ultimate.

* Finally restore my settings back from the server using the Vista FSTW

Presumably the Vista FSTW equivalent can read the XP versions files, or
should I expect troubles trying to do this?

Advice - Best Way To Transfer Settings To A Vista Clean Install.

As SP1 looms, it's probably time to go back to Vista after I tried it when on the Beta and RC releases and had a few problems with compatibility with other bits of kit. Tried To Do A Vista Repair Install - Lost User Settings, Installed Programs Etc.

Sep 26, 2008

yesterday i created a new vista dvd with vLite, because my windows folder was too big. after that i tried to do a "repair/upgrade install", like explained in this tutorial - Repair Install For Vista

as it turned out, it went completly wrong. i reinstalled vista on C: and the old version was moved to the folder Windows.old. obviously not that, what i want to accomplish. so now im online with a new user account - "lost" the user settings from my old user account, the programs are not "installed" anymore.

here is a small comparison of my situation:

- on C: i got now a new fresh windows and the old version in the folder in Windows.old

- Windows.old contains:

-- my old user settings

-- my old programms installed on C: (not a big deal, because i installed almost all programms on E: ---> other problem, see below)

-- the old windows folder himself

- as mentioned above i installed almost all programms on E: - obviously they are still there, but they are not "installed" anymore

so here are my key questions:

1. is there an easy was to transfer my old user settings to the new one?

2. is there an easy was to "install" all the programms on E:, without reinstall all per hand? eg. about registry import or something like that...

i hope it is clear, what my problems are - english is not my native language...

Changing Filename COLORS In (VISTA )Windows Explorer (explorer.exe)

Mar 23, 2008

I need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer similar to the MAC O/S Feature. This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.

I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. I can't believe that Windows STILL Cannot perform this simple task! If you have a working solution using Windows Explorer please email me and let me know.

Set Up A Raid Configuration?

Oct 30, 2008

My pc was configured in raid5 but I lost all the data. Since then I decided to go back to the classic drive C,D,E each by themselves. The point is that things are going slow / sometimes I try to access drive D with music and there is a significant latency in the hdd response. I can even hear the sleepy drive waking up. I might want to aim to high but here is what I dream to do.

1. I want to go back to a raid configuration in which all those hdd(i have 3x 500 sata) to work hard for me.
2. Find a way to add the fourth one in which to save important data. I case of crash to reinstall vista and all the soft without losing all my projects. I am doing video editing.

My motherboard has a sata external connector. What would you guys do with this configuration in order to set up a raid. Don t tell me trash it 'cause i won t. I paid more than 4000 bucks last year. Today might value less than 2000 ( hurts so bad). This is another reason I want to squeeze as much as possible from what I have.......
