i am trying to remove the annoying alphabetic letters in the Detail view in 'my computer' not the drive letters these i want but the unecessary a-h, i-p, and q-z i am sure its easy as i have done it before but that was 2 years ago when i originally formatted the machine now i simply cant find the way to do it again. I am going mad now

Upon sending it back, I am now "Valued Customer" instead of being greeted by my real name. I changed the user name, but my C:Users folder is still "Valued Customer" and it is recognized as my default name on applications like Trillian. How can I change this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedHave two computer. One is Vista premium (32-bit) and the other Win XP Media. The XP can see the shared C: drive on the Vista. However, Vista can't see the shared C: drive on XP. Yet, Vista can map a drive letter using \station1c format. (station1 is XP). So if I can map a drive letter, why can't Vista see the XP drive in the Network icon? All it sees is itself (station2).

I can "safely remove it" but upon next reboot it is back. I have an external USB G: drive, and I can change it to F: in the manage box, but upon reboot it is G: again.

The FOXCONN Motherboard has an (unused) CD connector, but FOXCONN don't believe that that is the problem.

Drive E: appears in My Computer/Windows Explorer. Drive E: does NOT APPEAR in Disk Management (so I cannot change its Drive Letter and letter E is NOT AVAILABLE),OR Device Manager (in a way that I can identify)
With XP once you entered the first or second letter of the a name in your contact group it displayed a whole name for you to choose. Vista doesn't seem to do this or am I missing something?

But since the CD is D:, the 2nd partition became E:. I am using software from StorageCraft to restore everything - boot record and all. In other words, Vista seems to insist on the currently running system living on C: (like in the olden days). I thought since W2K Windows can be installed on any drive e.g. my old system has W98 on C: (no choice there) but W2K boots from and stays on D:.
I have an external USB floppy drive that got assigned the drive letter B when it was plugged into one of the usb ports on the back of my PC. I need to change it to letter A. The drive is not listed under computer management: disk management. Removing the drive and reinstalling does not chhange the drive letter. Removing the driver in device manager results in installing new hardware, but with drive letter B. Windows takes the meaning of "settings" to mean, "user temporary suggestions only". I'm sure somewhere in the fine print of "The Window's Handbook" it somewhat clearly states: Window's settings are subject to change at "any" given moment, time or place . partition on his 1 terabyte HD with Windows 7 premium installed. In Computeradmin. it shows: The HD is partitioned with: boot partition without a letter - 100 MB. OEM partition also without a letter - 20 MB.
C: partition, system - 945 GB.
D: partition, Recover- 20 GB
All partitions are Simple, fundamental, primary partitions. I did reduce the C-partition from 945 to 439 GB. Then I would make a new simpel partition on the unallocated part. I right clicked to create a simple partition, but it said all partitions would be converted to dynamic dishes. I would only have a simple partition, but there was no such choice.
I searched all over and I haven't found a solution, but I know there has to got to be way to do this. I shrank my XP 64 partition and booted from the Vista 64 disk and installed on the unallocated space.
Everything works except:
When I boot into Vista 64 my XP 64 partition is drive D:, how do I change the XP partition to any letter but D:? D: has all my data (when booted into XP 64).
I've read that it can't be done, but there has got to be a way, if I
had a 3 partition triple boot one of those partitions would be something
other than D.
I am running Windows 7, but this would pertain to earlier versions too.I have access to a share, I'll call it \SERVERDocuments. I know how to mount that to a drive letter. That is not what I want to do. Instead I want to map it to my C:UsersusernameDocuments. I have searched online and others have asked this only to be told how to map to a drive letter.

When i changed the location of my pictures and music to an other location, all of them where working 100%. But then i had to change the letter of the drive they were on. Now when i click on them they don't do anything and if i right-click on it and go to properties it kind of freezes. A properties window appears but it's almost all white.

It's in the shape of a silver letter 'A' with rounded top left and right corners. I have tried to capture it using the "print screen" key but when I go into my graphics program and paste the image everything comes up except this Icon. I had this issue once before on a different PC and it was XP not Vista, and got tech support but forgot how to fix it. My spell check in e-mail works fine except misses the letter I standing alone. Tech support took me somewhere (in WORD I think) and we found this box that had the small letter i in it and was not supposed to have anything in it. Spelling rules or something. We removed it and it then worked fine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedTwo of us have been searching for hours (forums, newsgroups, google) on how to create more then 4 partitions in on the same drive in Vista. We understand you can't have any more then 4 primary partitions. Here is how the Dell M1530 XPS came preconfigured as:
Partition 1 = OEM (Dell Utilities)
Partition 2 = Primiary (Dell Recovery)
Partition 3 = Primary (C Drive with Vista)
Partition 0 = Extended
Partition 4 = Logical
NOTE: Partition 0 or 4 is for Dell Media Direct. The volumes are:
Volume 0 E DVD-ROM
Volume 1 D Recovery
Volume C OS
Partition 3 is 220GB in size. I want to shrink it to 60GB's. This would leave about 160GB as Unallocated that I want to format and assign a drive letter to (a Volume I guess). We've also played around with DiskPart a lot, so we're pretty familiar with it, although not experts. All of the instructions on the web are the same, as none of them work with more then 4 partitions of any type.
With the advent of terabyte hard drives, is there a work around for the limitatation of 26 letters for drive designations. I have a new computer with 2 terabyte hard drives, two DVD's, several USB connections, and I am running three different programs from ISO files stored on the hard drive with Daemon Tools, all of which take up drive letters. I have Windows Vista Home Premium, but see no work around for this limitation. I have searched Microsoft KB finding nothing addressing this issue. I am hoping that some one knows of a work around for the problem
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently fresh installed my Vista Premium x86 on my homebuilt, and I had all my data backed up on my flash. When I plug it in, Vista dings like normal, but it is not in Windows Explorer and Disk Management. The Drive did have some Code 10 Device Cannot Start problems, but those are worked out when I disabled it and re-installed the driver, and the drive DOES show up in 'Safely Remove Hardware' and the Device Manager. I kinda diagnosed that it doesnt have a Drive Letter assigned, due to the flash drive working in my XP x64 dual-boot.

Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"
Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........
When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?

Using both methods, I was able to import my contacts into my second computer but they weren't neatly organized in files: i.e. business contacts, personal contacts, family, etc. Is there a way to export my contacts so they are still in the correct files and are neatly organized?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista Laptop that needs to access a printer on an XP computer in my sister's law office. I'm having trouble trying to even have the XP computer show up consistently on my sister's computer. I can ping it every time from the command prompt. I have all firewalls unenabled on both computers. Identical user accounts on both systems. File and Print sharing set up on both. The Link Layer topology is present on the Vista computer. When the laptop sits for a while the XP computer will show up on the map; but, Vista comes up with an error message when I try to access the XP computer.
Beyond that, the map will lose the XP computer on occassion. The Vista computer can access the internet well enough through the router. At this point I can't install the printer on the Vista computer for not being able to access the XP computer from Vista. I've networked Vista computers before on XP networks, and this is the first time I've encountered this problem. Additional info; net view will not show xp computer. Workgroup name is the same for both XP and Vista computer. The restrict anonymous registry key on the XP computer is set at 1. Was originally set at 0. (Norton's Systemwork altered setting)
I have a problem: I have a Windows 7 computer that is part of a Domain. By using System Restore, Windows has managed to ruin the trust relationship with the domain. I use a domain logon and am the only administrator on the machine (the Local Administrator is disabled). I cannot log in normally, due to the trust relationship issue. If I disconnect the network cable while logging in, I can (cached credentials), however I cannot change any UAC-protected settings because if I enter my credentials into it, connected to the network or not, UAC will simply show an error "This operation requires elevation". Nothing I try will work.
I cannot disjoin the domain, because those controls are protected by UAC. Logging in from a remote machine using my credentials will give me "Access is denied". Resetting the computer account in AD has no effect. I cannot format and reinstall because this laptop does not boot from CD by default and requires me to install a program to change BIOS settings (don't ask, it's a Toshiba, the usual way is broken). I cannot install this program because I am faced with yet another UAC prompt. I cannot remove the harddrive because of the laptop's design. how to salvage this computer?
