My desktop PC (new last year) has 4 memory card readers built-in, which worked fine on delivery. Somehow, they are no longer recognised by the machine - and don't show up in Device Manager - even after scanning for new hardware.

In the past I have transferred photos from my digital camera via a cable to a USB port, and that process has worked fine. A friend showed me how to remove the memory card (type: SD) from my camera, and how to insert it into one of the cluster of 4 different sized slots on my computer. When inserted a small green light comes on, but nothing else happens. Based on his experience with his computer, I was expecting, in Windows Explorer, for a lettered disk to appear, listing the photos on the memory card using the camera provided numbers - but, as mentioned, nothing happened. What is the next step after inserting the memory card and noting that the green light is on?

View 4 Replies View RelatedA few months ago we were importing pictures from a memory card (in a usb card reader) using Import pictures in the autoplay box. On each separate occasion we imported, Vista only imported the most recent pictures - which is what I expected to happen. Today we've gone throught the same process and Vista has imported all the old pictures which were already on the pc and the new ones as well. Why might this be happening - is there a setting which may have been switched off as we don't want to keep deleting the duplicated pictures

As I've been doing computers for decades & health is my priority, not something in "background" I have SUPER healthy environment such as all-black background, silver-colored fonts, no distractions/graphics, brightness at zero, contrast at comfortably low setting which is in hardware + nVidia videodriver, my graphics is 512MB nVidia GeForceMobile. It's too long to explain but everything is as good as it gets.
The bright ideas don't arrive into your head in the office, in bright light while a bunch of people swarm around, you can hear peeing in the toilet, PHONES, etc. I use earplugs 34NRR rating, blue things that far exceed so-called noise reduction headphones (which are a ripoff).
Do you kno whwere bright ideas get born? In a park, woods, the bench, MY CAR - the best, I sit alone in total silence, no cellphones, no dorks of my neighborhood - I just drive out to s State/National Park and that's where I work on complex problems. I need all these PDF's with me. Printing is not an option you obviously understand. One Datasheet for Microchip PIC18F4420 is 421 pages, and I need like a dozen of things of this sort with me.

I have 2 powered USB 2 hubs connected to my vista PC - neither are recognised - i.e. if i plug my printer/mp4 player/camera etc into the hubs my Pc does not realise they're there. There are 2 ports on the front of the PC and 3 at the back - it makes no difference where I plug the hubs in, they are not recognised.
If i plug my printer/mp4 player/camera etc directly into 1 of the USB ports on the PC they are recognised.
i have Vista home premium and its been running fine until i try to use USB devices..it chooses when to recognise them.. i have a 250gb external hard drive that when i plug it into any of the 3 USB ports on my computer nothing happens (no noise to say its connected , no autoplay or the drive name doesnt appear in the computer section) there have been occasions where the device connects as i hear the little sound that is heard when you connect a device but nothing appears so i cant physically access the device. this also happens when i plug in my internet..i plug the ethernet cable and the USB cable from the modem to the laptop (which i have done many times before and have had no problems) and nothing happens i cant get ointo the internet. the only way that i can sometimes connect (incuding this time!) is if i restart the computer. i have done this when trying to connect any of my devices and there is about 1 in 3 chance it connects.
ive gone into the device manager in window and clicked on all of the ports which say they are working fine. but have also plugged the devices into other computers and have no problems. is there any way of scanning the USBports or does anyone know how i can fix this and connect my devices without having to restart time and time again?
I installed vista 64bit today on a sata harive in my new computer. Now in my old computer i had a 300gb IDE hardrive and i installed this in the new system and it is recognised in vista but says i cant use it before i format it...However i cant do this becasue i have so much data on it...Is there anyway to view it without formatting it?

I had 4GB physical memoryon the PC. With Windows vista 32 bit, available memory is shown as 3.3GB. I asked and was told that only under 64 bit windows, will the available memory be 4GB. When I upgraded to windows 7, I chosed 64 bit, but the available memory shown in the system is still 3.3 GB. Why is this and is there a way to make the full 4GB available? It's possible that my video card is using RAM instead of its own RAM. If I install a video card with its own RAM, will the full 4GB be available?

I have noticed an svchost.eve process runs each time I reboot which seems to bloat constantly although when I close it down it only frees up about 800MB, what's happening to the rest of my 8GB??? The machine is new, and I was trying out some apps and games, I was in Secondlife when I got an error messege saying I was out of memory and needed to free up memory. I shut down the app and restarted it. Runs but I watched Task manager and saw my free memory down to almost nothing after an hour or so. The cached seems very high.
I did alittle research and decided to set a second page file on my 1TB hard drive, (OS is on the other HHD's )( regulated by system for size ) I'm not really sure whats going on. Example of just task manager and this page openis attached. Again, any help would be great in getting the memory set up on here optimal.
I have 6gigs of DDR3 memory at 1600hz. Running on Vista 64bit and every now and again my memory performance just maxes out. The problem can occur around the time when I am installing something but I dont think its always this way. I have read forums where it could be the hardrives performing self diagnostics. I have all the latest patches for vista.

Vista simply hangs while booting, the last driver loaded is crcdisck.sys. If I remove the WinTV card Vista works perfectly. With WinXP all was working fine. I tried to remove all the cards from the PC... the issue happens when I insert the WinTV or the PCTV card... Of course I also tried to change some settings in the BIOS without success.

Windows is reporting 8 GB of Installed Physical Memory but is reporting only 4 GB of Total Physical Memory. I first noticed this when, after installing a game, the game system specs said 3092 MB of RAM.
I have checked the BIOS and it recognizes 8 GB. Memory Remapping is Enabled. Under Memory Remapping is "PCI MMIO Allocation: 4GB to 3328 MB" (?). MSConfig Boot Options shows Max Memory is not checked and no value in the box below. I tried enabling it and using 8192 as the value, but it made no difference. DxDiag shows 8 GB installed RAM. how I can get windows to make available all 8 GB of RAM? 1) CD ROM is completely ignored and OS boots
from a HDD.
2) booting process begins but it stalls. There is one kind of bootable CD which still boots which is DOS CD. I replaced the optical drive with a new one, but the problem symptom is the same.
I have a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC(32-bit OS). About two weeks ago, I was online when my power went out and my laptop shut down(no battery). It powered back up afterward with no problem but a few hours later when I tried, it would not go online. It cannot find any networks in my area. The message I get is "This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured." It suggests I install wireless networking hardware and verify the correct drivers are loaded. When I click that(Troubleshoot Driver Problems), it tells me to update the driver through Windows Updates. However when I do that, I'm told that I'm already running the most up to date driver.
The problem is not with my router/ISP. My husband's laptops are online with no issues. I'm not the most technologically savvy person so this is beyond my expertise.
I had this problem just over a year ago, and I took my laptop back to the shop -- they told me to take Vista back to the factory defaults. But when I did, there was a failure in the installation process and they told me that they would have to replace the computer -- apparently it was the motherboard -- on warranty. I hope it is not so major this time. Here goes. The USB ports have become very intermittent, spontaneously reading the plugged in storage device as having been unplugged, then spontaneously reading it as having been plugged in, with the sound that alerts you to that operation (this is exactly what happened last time, except over a prolonged period). Now my USB external hard drive isn't being read. It shows in the device manager, and the sound that alerts to when it is being plugged in or disconnected pings as it should, but in computer > manage > storage it is 'unknown' and 'unreadable'. My memory sticks can be read, though. And the USB mouse works in all the ports.
