Hardrive Recognised But Cant Use It Before I Format It
Sep 16, 2008
I installed vista 64bit today on a sata harive in my new computer. Now in my old computer i had a 300gb IDE hardrive and i installed this in the new system and it is recognised in vista but says i cant use it before i format it...However i cant do this becasue i have so much data on it...Is there anyway to view it without formatting it?
I have just bought a Sata/Ide to usb converter, but when I plug my harddrive into the usb port of any computer (vista or xp) it beeps and installs the Drivers and even adds the little safely remove hardware icon down in the system tray. but I can't find the hardrive in my computer or in administrative tools. I have tried an IDE hardrive,a 2.5 inch sata hardrive and a cdrom drive, why is it not working. The Adapter is Brand New, I have only just opened it.
im running vista home premium and Ive been trying to transfer all my old files and pics from a external hardrive which is hitachi ide that was out of my old laptop running xp when i plug it in through the usb and look at my computer its not recognizing it but when i look in storage in computer management at the botton it says unknown disc not initialized so i am unable to browse the hardrive.
I was reading how to format my HP computer and it says "Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord." Do I really need to disconnect anything I recently put into my computer to upgrade it. This step they call for seems useless?
I had recent problems with my computer, so I was forced to do a full re-install of vista. I rebooted my computer, booted up the vista home premium x64 cd, and when I got to the screen where I had to choose a hard drive to install vista on, I ran into a problem. First, I tried to format the drive, wanting a clean restart, and got an error saying vista could not format the partition on disk 0( I have 1 hardrive with no partitions) The drive was cleared though, it updated the screen saying that it had 1000gb/1000gb free. I figured all was well. So I continued and tried to install vista and got an error saying that "Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occured while preparing the partition slected for installation". Setup then immediatly stopped.
I tired forming new partitions, deleting the partitions, but nothing helped. I tried the load drivers option at the hardrive select screen and tried every disc that came with my computer, but it kept saying it cant find the driver. I read on the microsoft website that I might need to provide the correct drivers for the hard disk controller. But I cant find it. I have a hitachi Ultrastar A7K1000 *SATA* hardrive model no HUA721010KLA330. I checked their website and it says they are not offering drivers anymore. I now have a completely empty hardrive and I cant install vista.
I am running Vista Home Premium, Academic, and it will not recognise my DVD drives. The drivers are loaded but I cannot run any disks from them and they do not show on?
i am a novice at this and would apreciate any advise you could give,i have a hp vista home premium 32 bit pc.i backed up my files onto an external hardrive as i have read was the proper thing to do.i think one of my downloads was infected with a trojan horse so i tried a system restore, that did not help,so i did a system recovery back to factory settings i would now like to install my files from the external hardrive but i dont know where to begin as i understand when they get backed up on the hardrive they are in a compressed state
I did a system "complete pc back up" throught the "Back up status and configuration" program that comes with vista. This saved the items to my external hard drive but using the restore feature I can not do a system restore from these files. I can find the external harddrive, it just can not access the files on the drive.
I have 2 powered USB 2 hubs connected to my vista PC - neither are recognised - i.e. if i plug my printer/mp4 player/camera etc into the hubs my Pc does not realise they're there. There are 2 ports on the front of the PC and 3 at the back - it makes no difference where I plug the hubs in, they are not recognised.
If i plug my printer/mp4 player/camera etc directly into 1 of the USB ports on the PC they are recognised.
i have Vista home premium and its been running fine until i try to use USB devices..it chooses when to recognise them.. i have a 250gb external hard drive that when i plug it into any of the 3 USB ports on my computer nothing happens (no noise to say its connected , no autoplay or the drive name doesnt appear in the computer section) there have been occasions where the device connects as i hear the little sound that is heard when you connect a device but nothing appears so i cant physically access the device. this also happens when i plug in my internet..i plug the ethernet cable and the USB cable from the modem to the laptop (which i have done many times before and have had no problems) and nothing happens i cant get ointo the internet. the only way that i can sometimes connect (incuding this time!) is if i restart the computer. i have done this when trying to connect any of my devices and there is about 1 in 3 chance it connects.
ive gone into the device manager in window and clicked on all of the ports which say they are working fine. but have also plugged the devices into other computers and have no problems. is there any way of scanning the USBports or does anyone know how i can fix this and connect my devices without having to restart time and time again?

Just took delivery of a Cube247 base unit with Vista Ultimate64-bit installed. I have a freecom 500gb 3.5" External Hard Drive that after plugging it in isn't being recognised.I thought this was a Plug & Play thing but do I need to be looking for some applicable drivers. this as I am quite keen to be backing up to my Freecom as soon as.
My desktop PC (new last year) has 4 memory card readers built-in, which worked fine on delivery. Somehow, they are no longer recognised by the machine - and don't show up in Device Manager - even after scanning for new hardware.
I made the mistake of plugging my Wacom pen tablet in before installing the driver. Vista recognised the device and installed a default driver which does not work. The Driver installation disk will not install untill the default driver is uninstalled. How do i do this?
When I try to open a CD (*not* a CD-R or -RW) in Explorer, it often pops up a window asking how I want to format it. This is kind of silly for a non-writeable disc. If I click Cancel, it won't open the disc. Instead I have to let it try to format the disc and give up before it will open. A while back I called Dell support and was told to uninstall the CD drive and reboot. This fixed the problem once, but when I tried it again more recently it didn't help. I also tried turning on the Shell Hardware Detection service. That seemed to fix it for a while, but the problem has returned. Anybody have any ideas how to fix this? The system is running Home Premium and the drive is a PBDS CD/DVD burner. Autoplay is disabled. The dialog box that pops up is titled "Burn a Disc". It says "Prepare this blank disc", and has an edit box labeled "Disc title".
I have just added a 1.5 terra octet hard disk to my system and am unable to format it correctly. When I ask Vista Pro to do a straightforward format it blocks at 73% (roughly 1 terra). I have tried 3 times to get the same result so I thought that I would outsmart the system by making two partititions one of 976.56go and the second of 420.70go but although the first partition was accepted and formatted, the second format is blocked at 11%.
Made my first movie in WMM. This is my "Classroom video", where I am learning to use the software. Question: What video format would be best to burn to DVD+R for viewing on home theater or standard DVD players?
I want to format my c drive in windows vista, I went to disk management, and right click the drive but it is greyed out??.. I want to do a clean install of vista.
I need help. When I insert any non blank homemade cd Vista can't read it and wants to format it. Happens with Autoplay or when I use Windows explorer. Does not matter what is on the cd: music, pictures, data files, etc. The cds work fine in any other pc. If I insert a store bought or commercial made cd, no problems. Only have a problem with homemade ones. The drive is a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-850s.
I've done the following: 1. Uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it. 2. Added "NoCDBurning" to the registry (possible fix found on other forums)
I have tried to format my computer, first I tried by just inserting the disc, no luck, then I tried booting it from the disc, no luck then I tried going into computer management right clicking my c drive but the format option is no available. I have evn tried phoneing Microsoft but they want $80.00. Finally I thought I would format it by using my XP disc, installing XP and then upgrading to put vista back on the system but it won't let me do that either.
my laptop has 1 hard drive that is partitioned in 2 c drive works fine e drive was stopping me from deleting anything from it tried everything so last resort format it so windows started formatting just about to finish and it failed now it wont let me format it and when i went in to computer management it says it is a healthy primary partition drive but the file system is raw how can i get this back to ntfs
i'm going to format an external HDD: in the mask that appears in Vista i need to choose the amount i want for the size of the allocation file. what does this mean? How this will influence later my HDD storage capability?
I am using a 2GB SD card for ReadyBoost, and want to know what is the best format to use for quickest operation. I've tried FAT, FAT32, exFAT and NTFS, but don't see much difference (except for available space!)
I've been having driver issues up the arse, and i want and end, a fresh start! I have looked how do format but its either something is missing or its totally different for me. I wack the windows disk in, boot from that. Then windows pretty much reinstalls, never giving me the option to format the hard drive. Maybe its a really small button that if you miss it you cant go back, but i cant find it

want to format my hard drive and reinstall windows but its an OEM version of Vista Ultimate x64 I heard there may be problems and that it wont activate. I have the disc and all the keys etc. Also I want to install on another hard drive as the present one is too small and filling up quickly.
I am trying to format a cd that I bought (memorex) vista says it cannot be formatted because of its write protection. Unfortunately this is my only blank cd left so I can't use a new one. Is there a way of forcing a format? Or removing the write protection?
