Starting The Virtual Machines From The Console Leads To An Immediate Reboot Of My Host Machine (I Can't Even See Any Boot Screen Of The Virtual Machine - It Is Like Clicking Start In The VPC Console -- > Reboot Of Host)

Jul 5, 2008

I have the following issue and hope that somebody can give me a hint about what might be going on! My system has two raid 1 arrays - one is running on XP Professional SP3 the other one is running on Vista x64 Ultimate SP1. When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):

1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).

Now I tried the following:.........

Backing Up 32bit As Virtual Machine

Feb 8, 2008

I will be installing Vista Busieness 64bit on a system with Vista Home Premium 32bit currently installed. I want to convert the current install into a virtual machine (using VMware converter) so I can fallback to that environment from time to time after I install Vista 64bit. Is there anything I should be aware of? I am not 100% clear if I am actually allowed to migrate this install into a VM with the current license agreement.

Fast Machine Is Slowed Down By Virtual Memory.

Jun 22, 2009

Running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on M6400 notebook with 16GB RAM.

With 16GB RAM does Vista really need any virtual memory?

My quad core, 16GB RAM notebook would be faster without hard drive access due to virtual memory.

Can I turm off virtual memory or set it to some very low value (possibly 0)?

My preference is to use the 16GB RAM and should that be insufficient then I decide which programs to close. I don't want Vista using 4GB, or 6GB RAM, etc., and continually writing/reading to HD which slows things down and does not make full use of the physical RAM present.

Virtual PC 2007 Windows ME - Place Virtual Disk

Jul 29, 2009

Am I correct in assuming that, for Windows ME to run in a Virtual PC 2007 window, the Windows ME virtual disk must be located inside a disk partition that is FAT32? On a test run, I tried to install WinME on a virtual disk in a folder that was in my normal Vista partition (NTFS), and it didn't get far. I tried placing the WinME virtual disk inside an FAT32 partition, and although I didn't finish the installation process, I got that far, with the WinME instalation screen having popped up and ready for installation. One other thing: Is it possible to place the WinME virtual disk inside a logical FAT32 partition? Or must it be a primary partition?

Sharing Printer Attched To X64 Machine With X86 XP Machine

Apr 4, 2010

When I browse for a printer on the network I can see the workgroup, I can see the PC with the printer, but I don't see the printer show up under the PC in the Add Printer Wizard dialog. This was easy for me back when there were two machines running XP.

I have installed the x86 printer driver on the Vista machine. Would this be easier if I upgraded the Vista machine to Windows 7?

XP Machine Drops Network Connection To Machine

Feb 6, 2009

Computer 1 is my home desktop running Vista Premium SP1. It is on the 'workgroup' workgroup. Computer 2 is my work laptop (on docking station) running XP Pro SP2. It is on a domain called 'amer'. There is an HP LaserJet 2100 connected to the Vista machine. It is shared. This is a wired network with D-Link router. At first I thought it was a sharing issue when I could not print from the XP machine to the printer on the Vista machine. But then I realized it is a network issue because if I try to browse the Vista machine from the XP machine I get the 'no access, you may not have permission', etc. message. To make it work, I :

1. start the XP machine (assuming the Vista machine is already running)
2. wait about 15 minutes for the Vista machine to see that the XP machine is there.
3. Browse to and open the XP machine from the Vista machine
4. Go to the XP machine, open its workgroup (amer) and then open the XP machine
5. Wait a minute or so, then while still on the XP machine, navigate to
Vista machine's workgroup ('workgroup') and open the workgroup. If the Vista machine appears I am good to go. I don't need to browse it, it just needs to appear.........................

Network My Vista Machine With My XP Machine

Jun 24, 2008

Its been about three months since I've given up trying to network my Vista machine with my XP machine, but I thought I would try it again. here are my symptoms again:

*Vista (Ultimate) machine cannot see XP (Home SP2) machine.
*XP machine can see and access the Vista machine.
*Xp machine shows up in the Vista Network Map, but not the Network Folder.
*Both machines can ping each other.
*I can access the XP machine via IP address, I can access the shared folder but not a shared printer.
*IPConfig for Vista shows that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled even though it is enabled in the Network Adaptor Properties dialog. (NetBIOS over TCP/IP always enabled, the middle radio button)

Other information:
*Everything worked as it should once apon a time, then it all went to Hell. It could have been an update, tweaking software, or antivirus setting, but I notcie too late to do anything about it.
*I know it can't be that I don't have the same User/Password on both machines (I tried it anyway but it still didn't work), because it worked awhile back without having the same accounts on both machines.
*I had Bitdefender 2008 on the Vista machine, the Firewall log had entries that the ports 138 and 139 were being refused, despite having the XP machine being on the trusted list (by its IP address). So I uninstalled the Antivirus, but the problem persists.
*The XP machine has Zone Alarm Internet Security.................

Warning IE8 RC1

Feb 17, 2009

Vista Ultimate with all the latest service packs and updates install, then installed IE8 RC1.

Installed Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 1 and had the following
problems.

(1) Windows would not restart.

(2) required going through Safe Mode startup to get Windows to finish installation.

(3) after rebooting several times, finally got it going.
(4) Aero was turned off after all of this.

Not sure if it was a remnant of Safe Mode or from IE8 RC1.

Note: If you have to reboot, then turn off the PC. Unplug the PC or turn the power switch off on the back of the PC on the power supply. Sometimes just using the buttons on the front of the PC does not remove all power and thus all facilities.

I have seen this many times; demanding a complete power removal before the PC would restart properly.

No Warning Shut Downs

Jun 11, 2008

Whenever I try to convert an .avi file to DVD format, my PC starts the conversion process, and then suddenly shuts down. I'm not sure if this is a Vista problem, or a hardware one, or a ...? I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm wondering if there's some kind of fail-safe, a breaker of sorts, that shuts the PC down when the cpu usage is above a certain level? The PC does get extra loud when it starts the conversion, so my guess is the processor is really being drained. But if that's the case, shouldn't a dual core processor be able to hand a simple video file conversion? Am I making any sense? Probably not. Is there some kind of test / check / diagnostic tool I can use to assess what's going on?

Randomly Powers Off Without Warning.

Aug 12, 2009

My Vista x64 PC is randomly powering off. MSI Neo4 Diamond MB, AMD athlon 64 X2 4200+ CPU, 2G ddr2-800 ram, 1TB and 500GB SATA drives, ATI Radeon HD4350 video card. started a couple months ago. either you get into Vista and are working and suddenly pow... it goes off like pulling the power cord. sometimes it will do it right before the screen gives you the login to Vista..Thought it was a power issue and upgraded a 500W supply to a 750W modular unit. No change... have completely disassembled the unit, cleaned everything, cleaned the CPU/heatsink and put new Arctic silver in.

I can sit in bios all day watching the hardware monitor and the CPU never get's over about 30-31 Degrees C. Voltages are good and steady. as soon as it's booted to Vista, it starts... even sitting idle it will do it. I have Windows XP and Windows 7 RC on the 500G drive. if I boot to either of those OS's, it will run for days without ANY issues... it is ONLY vista that has the issue. I thought it may have been the drive, so I made an image and restored it to the 500GB drive, then removed the 1TB drive from the system... Same issues.

Reboots Without Warning While Surfing

May 30, 2008

I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have issues with the system cold rebooting while surfing any websites. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 system. I've had several avenues of support from Dell's "experts" from India. None has solved the issue so far. If I run a Video card stress test, then go on a website and surf, the system will cold reboot in less than 10-20 seconds. The CPU does not seem to go over 60c, and the memory does not seem to run out of resources. Currently, if I surf for about 30 minutes or so, I will get a reboot. I have reinstalled Vista with SP1 and all updates.

Constantly Getting The Low C: Memory Warning

Oct 18, 2009

I am running Vista Home Basic. I have good computer knowledge and skills although certainly not an expert. I can't understand why I am constantly getting the low C: memory warning. I store all pictures and music, etc. on a separate hard drive, and I have carefully gone over my program files and uninstalled any that didn't seem worthwhile. I have a 70 gig hard drive which seems like lots and is more than any computer I've owned before. Sometimes it seems that if I delete files, etc. to clear up memory and the next time I come back to my computer I'm out of memory again. I often get the "could not complete back up due to insufficient memory" notice. I'm unclear on what is being backed up and if this is part of the problem. I have 3 GB of RAM and the Virtual Memory is currently set at 3242 MB
