Would it be possible to have Vista installed in ext3 partition with the help of e.g. Ext2 Installable File System For Windows? I know that fat32 would be much faster than NTFS (which is funny because NTFS was meant to replace fat12/16/32) but I have larger files than 4gb so that's not an option. Ext3 would be even faster and it's limit for a single file is from 16GiB to 2TiB.
View 9 RepliesI have a PC that causes trouble with Vista (old software does not run and stuff), so we want XP instead. My plan ist to install xxp into C:WINXP side-by-side with the C:WINDOWS of Vista, and remove vista afterwards. So I don't have to split the partition and can leave data untouched.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had Vista installed on my Sata hdd(500gb), and decided to install XP on an Ide hdd (120gb). I had changed the priority of the hdd in the bios to the Ide and installed XP. Now xp is running fine but I cant see the Sata hdd in my computer, I checked computer management and it shows the sata as 104.01gb unallocated, 811.57gb healthy unknown partition and 259.39gb healthy unknown partition, a bit confusing seeing as its a 500gb hdd. So at first I thought I had wiped the add,so I checked it out using Linux to see what had happened, and for somereason the file system has been changed from Ntfs to raw. I have used a couple of apps to try and see if my files are still there, they are but I have no way of backing up 450gb worth of files.

Can vista 32 pro install on an ntfs partition formated with 16k clusters. If so how can I format the drive to 16k clusters using the vista boot cd, are there any steps or commands I need to do during the boot sequence? And are there any "stable" third party programs or suggestions so I don't have to dump the current os that is on the drive? As I believe that the image file restores the cluster size.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having some problems with my drivers so I am trying to delete the partition on the operation system drive and do a fresh install, operating system and drivers. However, no matter what I do I cannot get my computer to boot from the windows vista DVD so I can delete the OS partition. Here is what I already tried:
- My BIOS is set to boot from CD ROM first
- I have tried both DVD drives
- I verified that the DVD is good by trying it in a different computer where it will boot from the DVD drive
- The DVD drive works because I can initiate installation from the DVD drive. But since it isn't on start-up, I cannot delete the partition and all the drivers.
How do I get this dang computer to recognize this DVD on boot?
well i have a laptop with win vista 32 bit already installed on one partition.i have totally three partitions.one with the OS,one with the recovery partition and one just for my files.all three are on the same hard drive.now i recently got win 7 64 bit and want to do a clean install.can i do it without losing all the data in the recovery and other partition???

I want to -Dual boot between Vista64 and Windows XP32
So far -I have done everything to this machine from creating a virtual window in Vista64, to going into the command prompt from vista boot disk and running diskpart to clear hard drive.
I currently have -Two partitions on one disk. Primary 200GIG and Healthy 265GIG -Windows Vista Home Premium64 installed and running
The problems im having -every time try to boot from CD and run the windows xp setup, it is UNABLE to find ANY HARD DRIVES!
I have researched that
- I must have the disk partitioned
- Windows XP must be installed first
- I have to play with the boot.ini
- If i install vista32 it will be more successful
The errors I have gotten -STOP: 0x0000008E - i researched this and it said one option is to take out the excess RAM
I will be happy if - By the end of this weekend I can successfully run XP or both OS's in dual boot.
I need to go through all this trouble because - Digidesign has not written software for 64 bit proccessing yet. I need to make music.

During windows Vista 64 installation I eventually get the message "WINDOWS COULD NOT FORMAT A PARTITION ON DISK 0. THE ERROR OCCURRED WHILE PREPARING THE PARTION SELECTED FOR INSTALLATION. View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired a Dell Studio XPS 435 desktop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. My plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. Therefore I won't need the Vista recovery partition on the hard drive. I am trying to eliminate it and add to the C: drive partition. Looking at my drive 0 in disk management I have from Right to left a C: partition 683Gb NTFS with the usual Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Directly to the left is the Recovery or D: drive which is 15Gb NTFS marked Healthy (Primary Partition) and finally to the left is the last partition of 71Mb marked Healthy (EISA Configuration). No idea what that is. Right clicking in the Recovery partition gives several options including: format, shrink volume, extend volume, delete volume, mark volume as active, change drive letter and paths, as well as help.
My question is how to remove the recovery partition and then extend the C: partition. My first thought is to format the recovery partition, delete the volume and then right click the C: drive partition and extend it but I really need some advice so I don't screw up the whole disk. For instance I have no idea what if anything hapens to the drive letters.I think maybe what I am calling partitions are really volumes so you can see I am over my head here.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life
Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.
Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.
I've got a Hp computer that has Vista Home Premium 64 bit on it and I want to remove the partition D which is the recovery partition. I have factory backup dvd's, made my own backup dvd's and have a True Image of the drive with both partitions, so I think I'm covered. Anyone know how to go about removing the complete partition?

I'm looking for a Free Partition program to partition my external hard drive into at least 2 partitions. Does anyone know of such a program that's straight forward without all the bells and whistles? Also, would I set the partitions as Logical or Primary? Currently the drive is a Primary but if I partition it into 2 partitions what should they be?
My C: drive is 1Tb in size (931.43Gb), with Used Space of 73.8Gb and Free Space of 857.65Gb. I want to shrink the C: partition down to 200Gb, and use this just for my OS and App files - I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. This would then leave me with a new partition of c. 750Gb for my data files and documents etc. However, Vista will only offer to shrink the C: partition by around 260Gb as a maximum. It will not allow me to select a larger size than this. I've tried turning off System Restore / Shadow Copies, but this makes no difference. Any ideas why this should be, and what can I do? p.s. I've tried using Acronis Disk Director as well, but whilst I can select a new C: partition size of 200Gb, when the system reboots, nothing has changed, so ADD won't work either.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a really weird scenario: I've installed Vista on one of my partitions, after a few days it got corrupted, so i've installed another version on a different partition (different disk as well). I've since deleted the first vista installation. Now vista works perfectly on my other partition, no problems. However, when looking at the disk management I can see that the old vista partition's status is:" Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)" whereas my working vista partition is: "Healthy (Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)" My vista partition is not a system partition. This causes some problems, as I can't format the old vista partition. Trying to disable the disk at startup and booting with the Vista DVD doesn't help (it recognizes some problem but when rebooting, nothing happens, no loading of anything).Is there a way to assign the 'System' attribute to another partition and/or to remove the 'System' attribute from a partition?

Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm assuming a clean install with an upgrade license will be identical to a clean install with a 'full' copy, except that at some point during the process, it will ask for my key for Windows XP? I just want to confirm this is the case before I go buy an upgrade copy. one last question to tack on here - if I have a desktop and a laptop computer will it let me install the same copy and license key of Vista on both? I know some MS products in the past have allowed you to install on more than one computer because they realize a lot of people have more than one computer but they only work with one at a given time.

I've set it up with 2 partitions (one with the OS and the other with everything else) My problem is that however big i make up the OS partition vista eats it like there's no tomorrow. I've left it at 40GB but already have around 9GB free......(i completely reinstalled from scratch on Tuesday) so just waiting for more massive updates from Microsoft and that'll be gone. The real trouble is that using the OS installation disk i was given with the machine i cant extend an active partition with out erasing and formatting the partition. Could anyone advise me how to do this without erasing any data? please dont say i have to buy partition magic! surely the chaps at Microsoft envisged this as a potential issue

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've tried numerous times to Install Vista Sp1, but without success. The install appers to go well, reaching 100% at stage 3, but then the screen reports the SP did not successfully install, and proceeds to roll back. On Checking the message in Windows Update, the install failed with error 80004005. I've raised the issue directly with MS, but the advice to install the SP in Safe mode has not helped. I've also trawled various forums and cannot find any reference to the specific error code.
I own a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ1. A number of forums seem to suggest it might be a hardware issue, and I have tried disabling / uninstalling various devices to
see if this helps, but this also has not got me any further. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what this error code means? Is there a way to force the SP to install despite this error code (it does get to 100% at stage 3 after all, so maybe it does install, but one of the packages check routines is picking up an error which doesn't really exist???)

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Acronis true Image at one time, it created it's Secure Zone on the c drive, which was huge as i remember.
Anyway i uninstalled Acronis (too hard to figure out) but i think it left behind this 470 Gb partition on my c drive! It says "470 GB "unallocated" when i look at the drive, but that was not there before Acronis was installed' i'm sure.
How do i get rid of that partition, because i think it's uselessly taking up a huge amount of my space?
