64 New Install: "WINDOWS COULD NOT FORMAT A PARTITION ON DISK"

Jul 25, 2009

Have my system built and everything seems ok. Post is good with no errors. Only (1) HDD and DVD connected now. During windows Vista 64 installation I eventually get the message "WINDOWS COULD NOT FORMAT A PARTITION ON DISK 0. THE ERROR OCCURRED WHILE PREPARING THE PARTION SELECTED FOR INSTALLATION. ERROR CODE 0x80070057". Do I need to update BIOS? HDD & DVD/CD show in BIOS as SATA 1 & SATA 2 by there names. So they are being recognized.

Windows Must Format Disk Drive X Before You Can Use It

Feb 8, 2010

It's my new Sony ebook reader. It works fine on my old XP pc but not my Vista Home Premium laptop. I don't know how reformatting an actual reader would affect the device since every one at the Sony forum has only reformat their memory from the actual reader that has a reformat memory, you lose your books but all the Sony applications that runs the reader are still intact. Since I got this error, I've reformatted via the actual reader and still every time I plug my reader in my USB port, I get this error. I'm scared if I say yes that all the applications that makes the reader works will be wiped out. Here is the thread in the Sony Reader Forum of them trying to help me. I come on on #8 post as Sandyn Sony Reader Forum - Sony PRS300

Disk Management: Remove The Recovery Partition And Then Extend The C: Partition

Oct 5, 2009

I recently acquired a Dell Studio XPS 435 desktop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. My plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. Therefore I won't need the Vista recovery partition on the hard drive. I am trying to eliminate it and add to the C: drive partition. Looking at my drive 0 in disk management I have from Right to left a C: partition 683Gb NTFS with the usual Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Directly to the left is the Recovery or D: drive which is 15Gb NTFS marked Healthy (Primary Partition) and finally to the left is the last partition of 71Mb marked Healthy (EISA Configuration). No idea what that is. Right clicking in the Recovery partition gives several options including: format, shrink volume, extend volume, delete volume, mark volume as active, change drive letter and paths, as well as help.

My question is how to remove the recovery partition and then extend the C: partition. My first thought is to format the recovery partition, delete the volume and then right click the C: drive partition and extend it but I really need some advice so I don't screw up the whole disk. For instance I have no idea what if anything hapens to the drive letters.I think maybe what I am calling partitions are really volumes so you can see I am over my head here.

Cannot Format Partition Sata HD

Mar 23, 2008

As the topic states, I go into disk management, I see the 500gb drive (listed as drive 0) but when I try to format it, it errors after approx 3 minutes and tells me the disk management console view is not up to date. I installed the SATA raid drivers because those were the only drivers that had sata in the name on my motherboards website or install disc, ABIT IP-35 is the motherboard.

I did have it working once, but Vista kept asking for new drivers for new hardware on an unknown device, so I moved the Drive down one space and installed the sata raid drivers, now it doesnt let me USE the 500gb. Would maybe moving the drive back to the original space work? Or am I doing something completely wrong?

Format Option, Deletes Everything On The Partition?

Nov 2, 2009

Vista Basic x32 sp2. I can remember back when, I would install a windows os. I would use fdisk and wipe out the partiion, format the drive and install the os. If I remember correctly, the format, even on a 30gb, hd would take 1/2 an hour or more. Now I have a 160gb hd and recently have re-installed vista using the format option. The format took about 1 minute. Is this normal? Using the format option does vista actually format the drive or simply deletes everything on the partition?

Cann't Format Old Vista Partition

Mar 23, 2008

I've got a really weird scenario: I've installed Vista on one of my partitions, after a few days it got corrupted, so i've installed another version on a different partition (different disk as well). I've since deleted the first vista installation. Now vista works perfectly on my other partition, no problems. However, when looking at the disk management I can see that the old vista partition's status is:" Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)" whereas my working vista partition is: "Healthy (Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)" My vista partition is not a system partition. This causes some problems, as I can't format the old vista partition. Trying to disable the disk at startup and booting with the Vista DVD doesn't help (it recognizes some problem but when rebooting, nothing happens, no loading of anything). Is there a way to assign the 'System' attribute to another partition and/or to remove the 'System' attribute from a partition?

Windows Can't Format Drive H: - Check To See That The Disk And Drive Are Connected Properly

Jul 29, 2009

i just bought My Book Essential 1 TB today... and when i got home i plug it and it works just fine but its bothering me that the HDD type is FAT32 .. so i format it and try to change it to NTFS.. but somethings happen and boom the electric in my apartment was down... and so when the electric back i want to format it again but i can't... there drive is detected but with no space detail... it says "Windows can't format Drive H: - Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.

For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them" when i open the Disk Management from (My COmputer > Manage) it seems it's already a volume.. but the weird thing there is no space detail.. and i cant erase the volume ... i've tried using diskpart but i can't do nothing because there is no volume and i can't erase the disk... no luck with fsutil cause its not ntfs... I havent tried 3rd party software and i havent tried it on other computer (don't have other computer right now) and WDC didnt give live cd for formatting because all of them was in the drive... though i already redownload it but the program is useless..

Re-partition Disk: Disk Is Split Into 2 Partitions, Vista (C:)

Mar 29, 2008

My Disk is split into 2 partitions, Vista (C: ) and Data (E, each is about 70 Gb. I do not use the Data partition. I want to delete it and allow Vista(C to use all 140 Gb. The Help pages suggest that if I delete (or reduce the size of) "Data", the free space becomes unallocated? Can I repartition the disk to allow Vista C: to acces all 140 Gb?

Disk Management & EISA Partition: Delete And Remove To Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery Or Diagnostic Partition In Vista

Jan 14, 2009

I think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life

Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.

Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.

Corrupt Disk After Format With Linux Settings.

Mar 6, 2009

I was trying to install Fedora 10 (linux distro)
but I had accidentally changed settings for both hard drives.. Meaning I formatted both hard drives.. and when the installation failed, I had the error "no operating system found"

I had a C:/ drive
and an X:/ drive.. I can't see my C:/ drive.. but in CMD I'm using X:/ but it was formatted so.. hehe.. no operating system..

I used the Vista DVD.. I tried to format but I get a disk error.
(corrupted)

Now I'm not sure what to do to format my drives to NTFS..
I wana get my data back aswell.. But I doubt it'll be there if it's there.. I can't see..

I just delete to partitions from disk 0..
So I have 153 Gb free space..
But Windows install says "Windows is unable to find system volume that meets its criteria for installation" ?

"Disk 0 Unallocated Space" and "Disk 1 Unallocated Space". There is an option "format" but its greyed out When I select either of the HDDs there is a warning message at bottom of screen saying:"This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.". Then when I ignore this warning and click "next" it says... "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation" Neither of my HDDs will work? Both brand new... there is something subtley wrong but I cant see it.
