To do a complete full system virus scan (not Quick Scan) takes many minutes. I have mine on a schedule in Windows Defender. When I look at the History log it indicates the time to complete the task is about one minute. explain the log’s entry?
View 4 RepliesI have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.
I'm kinda a great gamer and when i download demos to test incoming games, i try running their setup and it takes a lot of time to start. About 2-3 minutes of waiting before asking if i want to open the file because it was downloaded from the internet (just with the demos i downloaded from the net, sure), and another 2-3 minutes to ask for permission to open it (the account security control or something like that). Then the task appears in Task Manager under "process" tab but it has only 64 kb of ram and it remains that way for another 4-5 minutes. Finally it starts (after about 12-15 minutes total), it installs and here's another problem. When the progress bar arrives to the end, it takes about 10 minutes to tell me installation was completed (during these 10 minutes installation does not busy the cpu at all). This problem occures only with setups, but not only with game's setups, with program's setups too.
I know there's not such a big problem "at least they install", but it's kinda annoying waiting about 25-30 minutes total to play a damn demo or to install a program.Has anyone had that problem? How can i fix it? Here there are my specs (it's an HP laptop, 6730s):

2 GB Ram
Intel Mobile 4 Series 128 Mb own ram, 796 total
HDD 150 GB (about 42,8 free at this moment)

at some point yesterday i restarted my notebook, and it appeared that vista froze on boot screen. after several restarts and system restores from dvd, for some reason i did nothing at an additional freeze, and after ages vista booted successfully. i tried several more times and timed approx 20 minutes of hangup during each boot.
i read around various forums, tried some things and nothing helps. to help as much as possible the people that might help me, here's what i gather's relevant:..........
"If your system is a Microsoft product and you have your 20 digit registration number, you can go to the Microsoft web site, and they will do a free scan and most likely remove any known virus such as Trojan win32.murlo." Is this true, and where would I find my 20 digit registration and what is the web site?

View 5 Replies View RelatedFor as long as I've had my new pc with 32-bit Vista I've had problems with the Network and Sharing Center. The problem never bothered me enough to really do too much about it but now, after a year of it I'm fed up and trying to fix it. So the problem is that I cannot open up the Network and Sharing Center properly. I click it, it takes about 5 minutes for the folder that pops up to be filled with any form of information, and then when the thing finally loads, not a single item inside the folder window is click-able. Under "Sharing and Discovery" there are the options for "Network Discovery," "File Sharing," etc. I can't click the drop-down arrows for any of those options nor can I click any of the options on the side of the window. I can't even close the window without going into Task Manager and sometimes that doesn't even work so I have to reboot the computer.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am working on an A300-1J1 (French Keyboard & Vista 32). The machine is owned by a member of my family, and when I got it it was totally down due to virus contamination. I started out getting the system virus free and by using Bit Defender, Avira Rescue and Trinity Rescue Disk, I managed to get it to the point where I was not finding any malware, but still couldn't boot due to files being trashed by the various malware that had been picked up. The machine was so hard down that it would BSOD almost contiously on a boot or would hang in the welcome screen.
I removed the hard drive and put it in a USB Sata external unit and then did a Avira check and it told me that the unit was clean, I then did a chkdsk /f /r and had 5 files that had been damaged and were repaired. I then did a defrag and re installed the drive and it boots fine, but i cannot seem to use any of my USb flash drives or my USB sata eternal units on it. It keeps trying to install USB Controllers and Intel USB Devices, but it tells me that when I plug in a USB flash drive or a Sata drive that it doesn't recognize the peripheral...
on reboot the screen went black and explorer did not open. after searching around I found I could get my desktop open by Run > explore.exe and ending the process of the currently running explorer.exe.
This was great, I thought i had cracked it. The virus was gone and internet browsing was fine (no pop ups or IE jumping up). However, my other programs suffered itunes would not appear among many other (they were runny on task manager but not appearing).............
Windows just stops during virus scan (Trend Micro)- eventually have to crash it Sometimes during logon, Windows just wanders away....either have to crash it or eventually it will reboot. Cannot boot in safe mode. It will get so far in loading dll files and then reboots it self after a period of inactivity. Cannot download latest Windows security updates.
The symptoms sound like the conflicker worm so I've tried the Sysclean tool recommended by Trend Micro with the latest pattern file. The system stops at some point just as it does with the virus scan and I have to crash it. If I log on to the latop and just surf or play games, no problem. I've also run sfc /scannow which reports no problems.
This friend of mine has real problem with her laptop (Vista sp1)it was first noticed when her anti-virus did a scheduled scan. The anti-virus program hung whilst scanning the System32 folder.I tried with Windows Defender. Same thing, it hangs after a while.
I de-activated her anti-virus program (forgot the name. Not a well known brand) and downloaded/installed Avast, to no avail it also hangs whilst scanning the System32 folder.I also tried to scan using SFC/scannow. The PC freezes at 68 % of the scan.I tried these different manipulation in safe mode.Same results and everytime, the PC Freezes and I am obliged to do a hard stop/restart.
I don't know if I got a virus or not. I don't think so, I ran a virus scan completely twice. but check it anyway.I was trying to get a photo program to do something, don't even remember what now, and it went crazy. It added a .lnk to every program. I mean every one. It wouldn't even show the desktop on a reboot until I removed it. It sent everything to the internet browser where of course it wouldn't run. I can't get rid of it. I can remove a program and reload it, make a shortcut and the thing adds a .lnk to the shortcut I delete the .lnk and it wants an association. I can assign it one but it requires it every time. There seems to be no way to check a "use this association every time." It's grayed out. It scattered all the desktop icons all over the desktop and changed the icon pictures all to blank. I have a program called Iconord that will restore the arrangement of the icons and it even failed.I have tried system recalls to no avail. Just getting email to work again took a long time and I still have to assign it an association

I upgraded to SP1, same thing. I cleaned out CPU fan/heat sink and processor, applied new thermal compound, removed all dust from all components, even updated BIOS. still no change. What else can I do?

Sometimes longer than that. When my patients runs out and I clisk it again I get a message telling me it's already open. Where, I have no idea.
My wife was on the internet and suddenly System Pro popped up and started scanning warning my wife of a virus attack on her computer and wanted her to buy the AV Pgm for $49.95. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi am having really slow boot ups lately on my laptop. i have done things such as virus scans, defrag hhd, scan regestry with REGESTRY BOOSTER 2009, defrag regestry. i also have no start up programs in my strat up folder. Problem is that i could start from dead start to a fully loaded desktop in 98 secs....now it takes 124 secs to do the same thing. where it takes the longest is at the boot screen i just watch it load then the windows logo comes up and it smooth sailing from there. i would say it takes about 8-12 secs after the windows logo to get to desktop.

The backup utility will only give me two choices. 1) a full system backup or 2) a backup of the files mentioned above since the previous backup. How do I just get a complete backup of my documents, pictures, etc?
View 5 Replies View RelatedRe: Vista Ultimate 64x SP2 I searched & failed to find a .docx file I had created & saved the prior 24 hours. My search found that a shortcut for the file still existed. I opened restore to find either a shadow or other backup copy. I got a Vista popup message notifying: "This machine has been restored from a Complete PC Backup..... some file backups might not be available . . you can still restore them in Advanced Restore by . . .etc."
Previously -I had never had the extreme displeasure of reading such a Vista notice - and I had performed only one complete PC restore several months ago. I, fortunately, did find the missing file using Vista restore. However, I was unable to find any log or record of any prior complete PC restores in order to reassure myself that the latter described Vista popup message was not referring to a recent Complete PC Restore that I certainly did not intentionally or consciously execute.
I am left with troubling questions: What other files, if any, are missing that I am not aware of? How can I compare my system with backups to find/verify the presence or absence of possible missing files? Is it possible for a user to trigger a Complete PC Restore without being aware of the event? Is there a Vista log or record that lists the dates of Complete PC Backups? (I found nothing using Vista 'Help and Support') What are the common mistakes an experienced user can make (excluding the execution of a specific file deletion) that will result in unintended file deletions?
I've got Win Vista Home Premium SP1. Up until recently, when i chose System Restore it came up with a calander-like window and then i was able to choose the day i wanted my sistem restored to. Then a few days ago I experienced a crash, and it took my pc a while to check my disk (the only one, since it's a laptop).

Then i manged to enter Vista again, and i thought i'd just restore again, hoping nothing was wrong. And when i clicked System Restore it took absolutely AGES to open (the rest of the stuff worked/s well...) and when it eventually opened i got that:

Where has the calender gone? Where are my previous restore points??? What's wrong?

My grandson allowed the vista security virus on their PC I am trying to fix it. It blocked everything I did between using my Daughters laptop and gathering info from the internet I did get the PC Doctor downloaded (took forever) and installed on the infected PC then ran a scan only to find out that I had to purchase the tool to remove it. I did and the Pc worked fine or so I thought.
DD looked up lowes last night and now today it is again posessed it will not let me run system restore everytime I look up something on the internet it redirects me to stupid pages that have nothing to do with what i key in. so I am trying system restore and it wont open it tells me it is already running. This is a vista home basics I have no idea if it is 32 or 64.
A Trojan that Counter Spy has found, I have done 3 full scans and each time this miserable little blighter keeps coming back, and I don't know how else to get shot of it. here is a screenshot of what Counter Spy found, please ignore the Cookies one as I have told it to remove and it was successful, its just the Trojan that keeps coming back on each scan I do. As a sidenote, how do I post a screen of something that shows straight away instead of an attachment that you must click on?

When all that was done, I installed McAfee 2009 ( thru a website for free... ) and i noticed my computer got REALLY slow...I uninstalled it, and i got McAfee Security ( I got it for free since I have ComCast Internet ) Ever since, my Anti-Virus has constantly been turning off. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a WD MyBook 1TB external hard drive. It's a replacement for a LaCie drive that I broke accidentally. Because I broke my LaCie, which held all my backups, I need to do a full system backup so I have one on file. (I'm running Windows Vista Business SP1 on a Compaq Presario laptop. I've tried this both before and after SP1 and have got the same result.)
The weekly file-only backups I have scheduled with Windows Backup work fine. It's only the full system backup that gives me problems. Everything goes as planned: I select the MyBook as the destination, and Windows starts the backup. Once it gets near the end (I'd say about 90% done according to the status bar), I get the blue crash screen. Unless I'm missing something there, or it's something other than a driver issue.
I believe my computer got infected with a virus. Windows Defender detected "TrojanDwonlaoder:Win32/Bredolab.AA" and "Trojan:Win32/Hiloti.gen!D". It claims to have successfully removed these. I restart my computer. When I log on, I get Data Execution Protection notifications about Rundl32 and the like. I also notice that "flvencoder.exe" is running and consuming 30% CPU. I did install this program (Gmax FLV encoder) and perhaps it contained a virus (though the program worked). I also don't recall that it should have started upon logging on. None of this really matters, I don't think. I did a System Restore to a point before I installed Gmax FLV encoder (3 days prior). The restore completes successfully. Upon logging into my account, I get see the "Preparing Desktop" message and know that this is not good news. My user profile was not loaded. All of the data is there though. What I first tried to do was logging into Safe Mode, and setting the reg. keys such that my old profile is loaded instead of a temporary one...................................

on 5/25/08, suddenly got lots of threat alerts, checked anti virus etc think it may have been disabled, don't know why. But system logs etc, now warnings, e.g. rule "default block Bla Trojan horse" blocked (my address). View 7 Replies View Relatedi am new to this forum but i have problem with my system bootup. my system takes too long to boot and it started 3days ago. it takes about 120secs at bootscreen alone. i believe it is not my start up programs as it takes about 3 secs to start up from login page. i donot use any third party bootscreen. normally, my system boots in 30 secs but now i am facing a lot of problem which i do not understand. i have tried all the tutorials in this forum relating to bootup problems but found no luck.

Ive been searching everywhere for answers i have vista home premium with windows live care anti virus in perfect condition and it detected something trying to connect to the internet. This monster devil thing icon beside it told me right away...trouble and also the random numbers...By looking in the settings of my anti virus i found that i blocked 4 of them so far ive scanned with my anti virus 2 times and 3 times with spybot search and destroy AND ran a ccleaner.It's still there...I just want to get rid of this once and for all but what in God's name is it!
