May 2, 2009

Search File Types In Vista Without Entering Part Of File Name?

Apr 14, 2008

I can't find a way to search for file types in Vista without entering part of a file name. For example, if I want to search my C drive for all PDF files or all photos, the search function won't work without entering text from a file name (which doesn't work, because all files of a particular type don't necessarily share letters or characteristics in their names). Has anyone else experienced this problem, or am I missing something?

Open Excel File:go To The Page Set-up, Screen Start Pulsating

I am currently running Vista Ultimate (32 bit) with an Intel E6400 chip and 4 gig of ram. When I open an Excel file and go to the page set-up, my screen start pulsating and it is difficult to get the drop-down menues to work. At the
same time I have a small circle that indicates the program is grinding away. I have had similar issues with Word when I try to print an envelope. This has also happened with other software applications such as Quicken 2008. Rebooting the machine temporaily solves the problem, but not alway.

PerfectDisk System File Defragmenter, Boot Screen Increased

Apr 5, 2009

I just reformated and noticed that it took Vista an average of 12 seconds for the boot screen to finish loading (I didn't count before or after that, just from when I see the green bar to when it finishes). After installing PerfectDisk 10 and doing an entire disk defragmentation, the time stayed about the same. But when I did a boot time defragment of my system files, the loading time for the boot screen actually increased to 40 seconds! I've rebooted about 5 times to measure the times and I've gotten up to 60 seconds as well!Has anyone else who uses PerfectDisk had similar experience? Did the boot time get better over time or did it stay the same? Also, in the program settings, it asks me whether I want PerfectDisk to manage my layout.ini file or if I want Windows to handle them; does anyone know which is preferred?

File Sharing Between XP And Vista

Oct 16, 2009

I just purchased a new Toshiba laptop. It is 64 bit with Vista Home Premium. Desktop is Compaq with XP. Connection between the two is cable direct connect through a Linksys router. Occasionally I do go wireless. Its a very simple network and its doesn't require any security since i am the only person that uses both computers. Toshiba can read and write files on Compaq.

Compaq can see the Toshiba in its network places but when I double-click on it, I get a request for a username and password which I do not know what to respond to since I have no passwords set on the Toshiba. I've set sharing on Toshiba C-drive and even turned off the Windows Firewall. How do I turn the password prompt off or at least know what to respond.

Accessing UserDictionary.lex File In VISTA

Jun 15, 2008

Editing the "UserDictionary.lex" file is now a simple matter in Windows Mail under VISTA. This is the text file where you can add new words in your emails to the dictionary file inside WM. I have an icon on my Desktop that opens this file directly. The path to the file is: Desktop/(user's name)/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail WordPad opens the file for you to check the words you have added. You can change, add or delete entries, then SAVE the file as it is. Since I use many unconventional English forms, it's a wonderful access point, because the spellchecker in WM no longer allows direct access to the file as the spellchecker in Outlook Express did.

Vista File Slowed To A Crawl

Apr 13, 2009

im a newbie to these forums and im a very inexperienced person with computers but here is my problem. My laptop became infected with trojans and spyware because of a doggy download which opened a hole for this stuff to spread. That rouge software winPc defender installed itself onto my computer. Although I was able to get rid of that pretty quickly and other stuff as well (using norton360, spybot and spyware doctor) that annoying "Insecure Internet Activity. Threat Of Virus Attack" message kept coming up, I also found that whilst using google i would be redirected to pages not relevant to what a had search for (such as blinkx or myspace video)

Using smitfraudfix I was able to remove that message But since I have used smitfraudfix my laptop has been running very slowly and has been crashing and failing seemingly at random. Whenever i try a google search on IE7 it still directs me to blinx and other places that I DID NOT type into the search engine and so I began to lose patience and I downloaded firefox3. Despite countless scans and checks nothing ever comes up so I suspect some spyware or malware may have sneaked its way undereath so that it is virtually impossible to detect.

Discovered That VISTA Has No Boot.ini File

Mar 26, 2008

I have been dual booting XP PRO for some time, with my main operating system on drive 1 (Primary Master) and my gaming system on drive 2 (Primary Slave). I control which system to boot up by the simple modification of boot.ini thus:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWs
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional DISK 1" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional DISK 2"=optin /fastdetect

And it has worked flawlessly. Now I have bought VISTA Ultimate, removed my two XP drives, and have a beginning VISTA system up and running on a separate drive1 by itself (Primary Master). My plan now is to do a similar dual boot scenario, mixing my XP gaming drive as drive 1 with my new VISTA drive as drive 2. I figured I had to choose this order because I discovered that VISTA has no boot.ini file (?or does it?), and so will have to choose system selection from the XP drive's boot.ini file. When I tried it, booting from the XP drive worked fine. However, when I tried to boot from the VISTA drive, the bootup hung with a blank, black screen. So I figure I can't do what I am trying to do.

Long File Names In Vista Nothing Works

Feb 21, 2009

I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit, and on one particular drive, I had backed up some files with extremely long names from a different system. The kind of stuff you find as temp files in the "Content.IE5" sub directory of "Temporary Internet Files."

Now, I'm trying to delete a parent directory where all these files are located. But Vista, in it's ultimate wisdom is giving me an error, indicating that it cannot delete these files becuse the overall path is too long - It suggested I move the files to a place with a "shorter path," but when I try, it won't let me do it for the same damned reason! The Source path is too long Nothing works.

Attempting to delete individual files, the parent directory, the "grand parent" directory all fail because Vista attempts to calculate/sum space and thus accesses each individual file, and fails because the "path is too long." When I try to rename individual files, it grays out the "rename" option. Is there any way I can either get rid of these files or bypass the "file length" warning so I can delete them? Formatting the drive is *not* an option. This is a SAN drive with lots of stuff on it and I'd never be able to off load it all.

Finding Configuration File For Windows Vista

Jan 11, 2009

I was messing around trying to install another OS which didn't install right and doesn't work and I seemed to erase the windows vista bootloader. So I try using the windows vista recovery disc to repair windows but it does not show up in operating system list in the recovery disc so I click on the option that says to click if your operating system does not show up on the list and it brings me to this file explorer and requests a configuration file in order to view vista. So could you please tell me what configuration file is the one I need and where I could find it on my hard drive since windows is still intact on it, only the bootloader is gone.

VISTA Hangs Or Stalls In First Screen

Sep 22, 2009

Toshiba Satellite vista home prem.sp2 32. 4GigRam 1.90bios

Ihave read all the posts in as many threads as i can find related to this issue and they seem to identify the utility chkdsk problems of some sort. I think my problem is not related to that and happens during the initial splash screen with the Toshiba/AMD on it with the solid bar that used to speed across the screen that now hangs, stalls or whatever at a point beyond half way. It can stay there for minutes and I dont know why. I have checked all the logs, events and the like and find no issues the diagnostics from toshiba and micro both come out fine. i use the couple of aftermarket utilities as well to find no problem but it does take loads of time. If it did it all the time I would wonder but this will zip across and move on to the next screen with the moving lights microsoft screen some times. It used to be the other way round; stall infrequently. I dont know what would be a worthwhile use of time to fix this if it needs to be fixed. It will take maybe 2 or 3 re boots to get all the icons to line up in the tray as well after one of these protracted boot up experiences. I dont know what to eliminate or bring back to the start up lineup. If I go the safe mode, it , of course, loads up like a jet. Something is going on there but I dont know what it is and would like any information someone with more experience and wisdom than I have can provide. and a fix if need be.

Vista Not Booting, Black Screen

Nov 16, 2008

Vista not booting if the computer wasn't shut down right? It will boot till a black screen with only the mouse curser (mouse curser won't move though). I can get into safe mode and have always just did a system restore to an earlier time, but this time, even when sent back to the earliest point it still wont boot. I have Vista 32bit, have added no new programs, and am caught up with the upgrades (but added none recently enough for it to have caused it).

Does anyone know how I can repair the boot info without having to reinstall windows. I have already got ahold of the boot disk but that didnt fix anything. I guess it at least gets into windows but one of the first startup stuff is corrupt.
