My various protections (Trend Micro), Spybot search and destroy, and Malwarebytes'. All of these came up clean. One of my friends that it'd be fun to link me to a porn site without telling me. My computer was fine, but once I restarted I had intermitten access using my browsers. Half the time I'd get 'connection has been reset'. Now, I'm completely unable to use either FF or IE. The only way I can browse the internet is via the AOL browser.

Is it possible that Vista updates are causing my web browsing and other network functions to fail frequently. My problem is that I often cannot access any of my web browsers home pages. My PS3 occasionally disconnects from Tversity, claiming a DNS error. I have had this problem using both wired, and wireless connection to router........

MY friend has given me his sims 2 game for me to install and play on my computer. BUT I am 110% sure that his computer is loaded up with tons of nasty trojans, viruses and more. Could I get some of those viruses if I play the sims 2 on my computer? Or will I not because commercially pressed disks are only readable?

My grandson allowed the vista security virus on their PC I am trying to fix it. It blocked everything I did between using my Daughters laptop and gathering info from the internet I did get the PC Doctor downloaded (took forever) and installed on the infected PC then ran a scan only to find out that I had to purchase the tool to remove it. I did and the Pc worked fine or so I thought.
DD looked up lowes last night and now today it is again posessed it will not let me run system restore everytime I look up something on the internet it redirects me to stupid pages that have nothing to do with what i key in. so I am trying system restore and it wont open it tells me it is already running. This is a vista home basics I have no idea if it is 32 or 64.

The AVG anti virus free trial has ended so I have tried to remove the program using the 'unistall a program' feature on my laptop. It seem to remove sucessfully but when checking the security, it still shows AVG as running. Is there anything you can suggest to remove the program before I install a new anti virus??

My computer has been having issues accessing some internet sites: facebook, yahoo, thisiscornwall and so on. I have Kaspersky internet security and thought everything was ok. Until i decided to download AVG. Whilst running this scan AVG discovered i have a Vundo. 0 trojan. AVG stated the trojan had been deleted. However i decided to manually remove the program the trojan was found in (a zip file for registry mechanic sent from a friend). I also uninstalled the program. However the problem is still there and i cannot access certian sites. Does anyone know what i can do to get rid of this problem? I have tried a vundo removal program and also vundobegone (in which you start the program in safe mode) these both returned a nothing found result.

I have just installed the above and updated the latest definititons, and as someone who knows, not a lot re.computers, does that mean it takers the place of an anti-virus programme? I have AVG installed and I'm happy with it. I'm not sure if the above will conflict with AVG as it says MSE it is a virus and spyware scanner.

I just installed and-virus and firewall software but Vista Security Center reports no anti-virus software installed. The anti-virus software reports all is well. Also before installing this I turned off Windows Firewall but still noticed that Vista is reporting Windows Defender running and active. I thought Defender is the firewall. I must be mistaken.

Windows just stops during virus scan (Trend Micro)- eventually have to crash it Sometimes during logon, Windows just wanders away....either have to crash it or eventually it will reboot. Cannot boot in safe mode. It will get so far in loading dll files and then reboots it self after a period of inactivity. Cannot download latest Windows security updates.

The symptoms sound like the conflicker worm so I've tried the Sysclean tool recommended by Trend Micro with the latest pattern file. The system stops at some point just as it does with the virus scan and I have to crash it. If I log on to the latop and just surf or play games, no problem. I've also run sfc /scannow which reports no problems.

My relatively new Dell desktop is showing abnormal cpu usage. Task manager shows a normal list of processes when I am the only user signed on. when I select all users, a bunch of "system" processes (about double) are added to the list, and some of them (svchost, etc)are consuming 40-70% cpu. what's going on? how do I stop this?

No matter how much memory you have in your PC, you may not be getting the most out of your installed RAM. A few little-known system tweaks can improve the way Windows manages memory, freeing up more RAM for your applications. As described in an entry on the Microsoft Developer Network, all non-server 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Vista impose a memory limit of 4GB. Your system may allow you to install more than this amount of RAM, but with few exceptions, the extra memory won't do Windows or your applications any good.

Moreover, even if you have 4GB of memory installed in your PC, you may not be able to use it all. For example, if your video card comes with 1MB of memory and you have 4GB of RAM, your system actually has 5GB of memory physically installed. But Windows will use only 4GB of that total, regardless. It gets worse: according to a comment posted to the MSDN article, Windows itself is getting only 3GB because the video card gets 1GB. This happens because the memory aperture — a portion of system memory — is used to work with the video system. Ways to break through Windows' RAM ceiling

Fortunately, there are techniques you can use to get around Windows' system-memory limitations. One method is to use Physical Address Extension (PAE), a feature of x86 processors that lets 32-bit operating systems overcome the 4GB memory limit. Another MSDN article explains that 32-bit Windows operating systems support PAE. Even though XP and Vista still cling to the 4GB limit with PAE enabled.....

while i was looking in task manager i saw that i have 2242 free and 961 cached and it says 4086 total and i was wondering why the cached and free doesint add up to the total ram?? its also useing 1.29gb of ram right now but if you add that up with thoes two it would be over 4gbs. in everest it shows as it should be free is 2702 used 1382 and that adds up to 4086. so is that just how vista managements memory? does anyone else taskmanager free and cached add up to the total 4086? this is also 64bit i also check my laptop asus g50vt-x5 with 4gb of ram and vista 64bit and the cached and free also doesint add up to the total amount of ram.

We developed a program to integrate a large amount of data for National Air and Space Museum (NASM) volunteer use. The program works fine, but our users are relatively unsophisticated volunteers. They get confused by the warnings issued by Access when opening our program. Our users run at multiple Win2K and XP machines and load our program and the data over the Smithsonian intranet. ....Note that the path shown above is when I'm testing on my home network, not at NASM. Also, that warning was from Office 2007 but at NASM they are still using Office 2003, so the dialog box is different.
Also, the error message is different under Office 2003 (and a lot more confusing for users.) I'm not at NASM now, so I can't see the exact text of how the error appears there. I'll post that tomorrow when I go there. How can we avoid these warnings? Would it work for us to obtain and publish a certificate for the program code? If so, does it need to be reissued each time we make a change? (Since we have only been up and running for users since January, the code is still being modified as we gain experience.)

Again today it was sent by Dell and installed-same thing, couldn't access internet until I uninstalled it.

Using Vista Home Premium and Internet Explorer 7. When on the internet, I'm getting a popup titled "Windows Security Alert." It says my computer is infected with: It wants me to download a remover from promalwarescannerv2.com. I'm running McAfee Total Protection, but when I do a system scan it says all is OK. I did a system restore, but it comes back later.

        1. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 (Not Recommend): AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Download Free Antivirus

2. avast! Free Anti-Virus Edition: avast! Free Antivirus - Download Software for Virus Protection

3. Avira AntiVir Personal: Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus

Please post if there are anymore free anti-virus editions. For #5 (Comodo Internet Security Suite), there is a bug. If you click the link, it will go to Comodo Anti-Virus, you can use Anti-Virus. If you want Internet Security, click it on the left side panel.

No doubt its something similar to my last post, but I can't seem to get around it. Any info would be great. TIA BTW I have 2 memory sticks and only one came up with this.

I am running Windows Vista Business x64 SP2 with all the latest security updates. My problem is ALL of my web browsers simply stop working after a while. If i use IE 8 i get the message: "cannot display the web page". once i get this error i cannot even use any other browser, so Firefox / Safari / Chrome does not ever work. If i ping the website it works fine, so the connection isnt the problem. Technically the broswers dont crash they HANG. Firefox and IE close, but when you check task manager the process is still running, and you CANNOT close the process. the only way to fix this, is to restart and it is getting very annoying.

At first I thought this was an IE7 problem but after installing Firefox the problem exists there as well.
Problem:
Most of the links on web pages will NOT connect from this machine. For instance, using any Search Engine (Live search, Google, Ask.com etc) I can NOT connect to any of the sponsored links. When I copy and paste the named web address for that link then I connect without a problem.
I've posted in the IE and Firefox groups without even getting a suggestion.I had even uninstalled spybot and adaware and stopped the firewall and kaspersky but the problem remained. It looks to me like a security setting but I don't know where else to look.

Up until a few days ago, my partner's Compaq laptop was working ok but now Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 3 cannot connect to the internet. My laptop (XP) works fine with the same connection so don't think it's an issue with our broadband.

Symptoms/facts on Vista laptop:
* There are no proxy setting in either browser
* In Internet explorer - the 'Interconnect connection setup' states "You are already connected to the Internet"
* Can ping sites (e. Google)
* Google updater can download from internet
* Windows Update can download from internet
* Windows Network Diagnostics - "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection"
* HP Total Care Advisor - states that Internet connection is good
* Tried switching off firewall - browsers still cannot connect

recently i have been having problems with my browsers. i use both safari and firefox over a wireless network at home.

i can happily surf for around 10 mins with safari, but after that time it is as though i have lost my connection to the internet. i can then use Firefox for a short time, around 5 mins after that, then the same problem arises. in order to get back online i have to restart my laptop.

i have no idea what the problem is, its been doing it for over a week now, and i need my internet as i have university deadlines coming up.

the router/isp are fine, as my flatmates both have steady connections (ones running XP the other Leopard). avast, ad-aware, and malwarebytes all come up clean- though i had some reported malware a week or so ago which adaware dealt with

i have however been trying to make my laaptop as fast as possible without overclocking it, so have been diabling startup services and other non-essental services that eat my precious ram and cpu power.
is it a common vista problem? or have i changed a setting or something thats making it do this?
i have read other threads with simmilar issues, but have not found anything that helps.
