View 9 RepliesI have my Vista laptop (HP) hooked up to an external monitor, I have been using the sleep mode at night. The laptop is closed and on a shelf that is very hard to get to. I would like to shut it off at night. I can shut it off with the keyboard. Is there any way possibly software controlled to turn it back on? To reach the power button on the laptop you must first raise the lid which there is not room to do
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am embarrassed to ask it. Previously I had WindowsXP on my laptop - to turn it off you went to Start, Turn Off Computer. This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Also, is there a way of hiding all the command bars to "hide" like you can with the taskbar on the bottom?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't figure out how to turn the computer off using only the key board. In previous windows, it was Windows/U/S , or maybe Windows/U/U. With Vista, I seem to have to use the mouse, or the infernal laptop touch pad, to get to, then click on, an arrow which displays a list, which requires the use of the touch pad again, because the list has no accelerator keys. 4 steps, each more complicated than one letter, where one keyboard letter used to do.
Also, I don't have them side by side, but it seems that when playing Solitaire, it took longer to turn over each set of 3 cards, than it did for me on WinXP or Win98, and I'm sure the Vista CPU is faster than the others I've used. (It's a Toshiba Satellite laptop, which came with Vista installed, but I don't know the speed.
All drivers are up to date.. Nothing in the event viewer to indicate a problem. If I try to burn to the DVD or read from it, my machine shuts off. Not reset, full shut down. No viruses, no spyware/malware. I'm behind a NAT firewall with SPK and use the Windows Firewall and Avast so I'm pretty sure it's not something evil that has gotten on my machine. Googling doesn't reveal anything. Has anyone seen anything similar..Dell or not? I don't mind not having the DVD for burning because I have other machines that I can burn from, but if I can't read from the DVD drive without the machine shutting down, I may as well have a netbook.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just recently turned off my laptop by pressing the off button and not the proper way on the start menu ( I know I'm an idiot) and now it won't turn on or off. It is now a black screen and when I press the on button it blinks purple and then red. I am currently using my friend's computer to post this. Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do in order for it to wake up?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just noticed an hour ago or so that Winkey-D shortcut-combination stopped working. I tried to do restart without luck. Also, it can't be related to keyboard failure as the keys Winkey and D separately are working. Every other comibination like Winkey-M, Winkey-E etc is working. Is there a way to check if everything's OK? Some registry tweak, messing with gpedit.msc?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe 1st problem is everytime I close my lid/turn off the power/click the sleep button to put my computer to sleep before I go to sleep myself at night, I always wake up and my computer is at the log in screen, but it has restarted without any settings I'm aware of making it restart. I then log into my computer and it says that "windows has recovered from an error causing it to shutdown" etc etc.
Then 2nd problem is whenever my computer does come back from sleep, which it does if it hasn't been asleep long, or whenever it is restarted in general...my monitor settings from my dual monitors changes. I have to go back into the properties tab and change it so I can drag my mouse from the left screen across to the right, and change which monitor is my main monitor. Sometimes my recycle bin icon even goes back to a different spot on the monitor.

View 7 Replies View RelatedJust got a new HP Pavilion d6500t with installed Vista Ultimate x64. Has been tough going, but was scraping by until today. I installed Quickbooks (via download) and transferred my data files from my old pc to the new pc. Things seemed fine. then BAM!
The screen became "jumpy" and I received a number of error messages. Could not bring up Task Manager, so I had to shut down the pc manually (turned it off). Reboot involved a system check because of the manual shut-down. System check was fine...but, now my pc is frozen on a black screen with the hp logo in the middle. My choices are the usual: Press <ESC> to enable startup message, <F1> to enter System information...etc. I cannot go ANYWHERE from here. The F-keys are not responding AND I cannot even manually shut off the pc! I am a total novice when it comes to pc systems.
During inactivity my computer goes to sleep, actually it goes into a coma and can? it be awoken until I turn it off. And not by just turning it off at the switch, I have to unplug it and then restart it. At that point I get this message: The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to resume again? And then I have two choices; continue with system restore, or delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu. The second choice is the only one that works. Why is my computer going into a coma, and how can I fix it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIn my XP days I would assign each of my laptop's network adapters (wired and wireless) its own static IP address. I did this to make it easier to manage things like opening certain ports when using the laptop for gaming over the wired connection only.
Now that I have an all Vista home network consisting of a laptop and a desktop both with Vista Home Premium I am running into trouble assigning these static IPs on the laptop. The primary connection is the wireless and i use the wired connection to game or to transfer files across the network. When I go to set the IP on the wired connection I get the message: "Warning: Multiple default gateways are intended to provide redundancy to a single network such as and Intranet or the Internet. They will not function properly when the gateways are on two separate, disjoint networks (such as one on your intranet and one on the Internet). Do you want to save this configuration?".................
Two of us have been searching for hours (forums, newsgroups, google) on how to create more then 4 partitions in on the same drive in Vista. We understand you can't have any more then 4 primary partitions. Here is how the Dell M1530 XPS came preconfigured as:
Partition 1 = OEM (Dell Utilities)
Partition 2 = Primiary (Dell Recovery)
Partition 3 = Primary (C Drive with Vista)
Partition 0 = Extended
Partition 4 = Logical
NOTE: Partition 0 or 4 is for Dell Media Direct. The volumes are:
Volume 0 E DVD-ROM
Volume 1 D Recovery
Volume C OS
Partition 3 is 220GB in size. I want to shrink it to 60GB's. This would leave about 160GB as Unallocated that I want to format and assign a drive letter to (a Volume I guess). We've also played around with DiskPart a lot, so we're pretty familiar with it, although not experts. All of the instructions on the web are the same, as none of them work with more then 4 partitions of any type.
Running Windows Vista Ultimate. Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?
View 6 Replies View RelatedBefore the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"
Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........
When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista Laptop that needs to access a printer on an XP computer in my sister's law office. I'm having trouble trying to even have the XP computer show up consistently on my sister's computer. I can ping it every time from the command prompt. I have all firewalls unenabled on both computers. Identical user accounts on both systems. File and Print sharing set up on both. The Link Layer topology is present on the Vista computer. When the laptop sits for a while the XP computer will show up on the map; but, Vista comes up with an error message when I try to access the XP computer.
Beyond that, the map will lose the XP computer on occassion. The Vista computer can access the internet well enough through the router. At this point I can't install the printer on the Vista computer for not being able to access the XP computer from Vista. I've networked Vista computers before on XP networks, and this is the first time I've encountered this problem. Additional info; net view will not show xp computer. Workgroup name is the same for both XP and Vista computer. The restrict anonymous registry key on the XP computer is set at 1. Was originally set at 0. (Norton's Systemwork altered setting)

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an old-school program that creates its directory at a hard-corded directory in C's root (C:xxx). Now, I don't want to run it with administrative privileges, I changed the directory's security permissions to (everyone - full control) and make them inherited to all its sub-directories. The program reads & writes fine with existing files. But the program creates a c file inside its directory and tries to let a C compiler on a network drive compile it. That 92s when the problem comes in. It creates the c file all right, but the c compiler cannot read it (saying =93permission denied=94). If I turn UAC off, I don 92t get errors, but I don 92t want to turn it off.
