At some point I acquired a folder on my C drive named: 0b7dcdf07ed7b9c7a3898d7f. I suspect it is from a windows update. I takes up a bit of the HD.
1. Does anyone know what it is, and
2. Can it be safely deleted?

I was thinking of using two cards with a crossover cable but thought it better to just ask. What recommended additions would you suggest and is this possible at all ... particularly without having to disable the vista firewall.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using Robocopy to backup photos and music files to a local network connected 1TB Western Digital drive. The initial backup worked for both tasks. This is the command line in the .bat Robocopy C:UsersOwnerMusic ecordings \externaldrivepublicBackUp-Music ecordings /S /COPYT /MIR /Log:MusicBkupLog.txt Now, the subsequent backup for my music folders fails on a specific folder with error: ERROR 5 (0x00000005) Deleting Extra File \externaldrivepublicBackUp-Music ecordingsAmbroseNewA Fine Romance-Browne.mp3 Access is denied. The process stops there. Subsequent folders are not backed up. The ownership for that folder looks suspect: nobody (Unix User obody)
Other folders that work have owner as: administrator (EXTERNALDRIVEadmin) I can not change the offending folder's owner. I have tried the following as administrator: Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner > Edit > change owner to I get access denied. And with DOS from an administrator command prompt: takeown /f S:BackUp- MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew RMDIR /S S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew I get access denied. I can access the directory so my path must be correct: dir S:BackUp-MusicRecordingsAmbroseNew How can I change ownership or delete the offending folder?
I am using Vista 64 bit with SP1. I have files on the drive that were copied from when I had XP installed (installed vista on a second partition). I am trying to move them to a different folder. Can't do it no matter what it says I don't have permission. I am logged in under Administrator, and I have made sure the account is enabled (I added it since it was installed under a different name and got rid of the old one)
No matter what I do nothing will give me permission. I have tried everything - used a registry change to add the 'move to' to the menu, I have gotten the 'run as administrator in the menu now, I have turned UAC off. I have tried changing permissions, I have tried taking off the read only (I don't know if maybe in XP it was already set to read only?), I have tried the DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS thing, and I have tried the tutorial here of taking ownership of the file and adding it to the menu (When I try to run the file through the elevated command prompt it gives me the access denied box again.) The only thing I can get to work is copying the file which is not an option as I have hundreds of gbs to move. I'm only trying to move it to a different place on the same drive. I also tried copying with testdisk because when I copied files before to a different drive it was so fast but for some reason now it barely moves.
is there any way i can automatically backup a folder or syncronize a folder as soon as i insert my new 64GB flash drive...

I had a problem importing favorites from my win XP IE 7 via a flash drive,( not a valid bookmark file error ) and after upgrading to IE 8, uninstalling IE 8 and reverting back to IE 7 I got my favorites into the User Name non documents folder.
I deleted the favs folder in documents which showed it as empty. Now I cannot re import my favs again from the flash drive.
I am trying to avoid the whole process of installing IE 8 and reverting to 7 again and I think I did some stupid deleting.
Can I just create a documents /folder name favorites and hope that IE will import form there? If so I tried it and got an error ( incomplete URL ).
I would like to set some key folders to have icons that identify what is inside. So my Windows install folder would show a folder with the Windows logo in front. (I have the ICO for that.) But how do you do that? I found a folder that has such a specific icon, but I wasn't successful getting it to work. My example used an icon inside an EXE. My icon is a stand-alone ICO.

That is not what I want to do. Instead I want to map it to my C:UsersusernameDocuments. I have searched online and others have asked this only to be told how to map to a drive letter.

I then tried to show her how to do the same thing, this time it said that there wasn't enough room on the drive. I don't understand why Vista did not give an option to overwrite the Folder. I then formatted her flash drive and tried backing up again and it worked fine. But then, when I tried to back up again (now that the flash drive had the 350MB folder on it), it again told me that there wasn't enough room and did not give me the option to just overwrite.

For any individual sub folder I can right click and change the customize properties to detail view, but for the C: drive no such option is aviable. How can I change the view back to details?

When I plug it into my laptop, I can not figure out how to change the view of it so I can just put one "picture" on the folder. I need to know what is in each folder by looking at one picture on the icon and for the life of me, I can not get it to work. I right click, go to customize and choose file. I pick what I want on there and then click apply and it does not work. I am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas for me. I can get it to work on something that is internal but not the external.

Destination Folder Access Denied, then I have to click Continue, then in user accounts control it says windows needs your permission to continue & I have to click Continue again. XP didn’t give me this run around, what’s the deal with Vista? I’ve searched but can’t find a fix for this.
I’m the Admin & can’t understand why Vista is treating me like a child & making me double check what I tell it to do. Isn’t my computer a PC or is it now owned by Vista!! That’s frustration coming out but I have other small issues about user unfriendly Vista where XP was user friendly.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install some software recently, and each time I get to the Installation Wizard, it tells me that it cannot complete installation because the "documents" folder is either not valid, or not on the C drive. I have not changed any of my folders, but this seems to be the same message I get. I can download the software, but cannot install. It is not an issue with the software, it seems to be a vista thing because it is happening with everything, not just one particular software. Does anyone know how to fix this? I wonder if this is related to a recent update?

I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.
I'm running Vista on a PC that has a hd that has been formated into 3 discrete drives.Vista is loaded onto the C drive, programmes are loaded onto the d drive while i have my data stored on my E drive. By default any documents I save are directed towards My Documents on the C drive - how I go about changing that so the default is my Documents on the E drive?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

For some reason,my Program Files directory has been changed to the Photos directory type, so it changed from the details like file type, size, etc., to rating, photo size, etc.I cannot figure out how to change the directory back to a General file folder type. The toolbar shows things like Slide Show, etc.The sub-directories are all fine and appear as a General type. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have C & D drives, I use D for mundane filesdownloads and portable apps. However, I have a few folders that's are different from any I've seen. I don't know how to explain it other than using a detailed example.
I have D:Folder1
I can rename Folder1 to whatever I want.
E.g it will appear as D:NewFolder
However the dir location of it still points to D:Folder1
I have also scanned the registry for D:Folder1 and D:NewFolder there are no references of it. I've reformatted the C: drive multiple times and reinstalled windows. So I know it's nothing to this specific windows installation (the folders have been like this for about a year) It's not really a problem, I love it because I can rename the folder without messing up links etc. At first I thought it might be a junction, however in cmd it still shows as <Dir> not <Junction> I also checked for hidden folders on the drive. I found nothing.
When I put e.g. documents in my publick folder, do they appear automatically in the private folder too? Do I really need 2 folders to see all my docs in vista?

The possible causes are not the problem. I have 2 gig memory and it was working fine when I only had 1 gig of memory. Disk space, I have over 90 gig of free space.

I found the answer once before in one of the forums, but can't remember where it was. And why does this happen? Also, when I go to 'Help & support" in the Start button, it defaults to Lenovo (my hardware mfg) instead of Microsoft Windows.
