Jul 29, 2009I am trying to use a batchfile to backup from a PC to a NAS. I am using the /D switch, and the files are mostly months newer on the NAS, but it still wants to copy them all.

View 9 RepliesI'm having some problems with xCopy files to profiles on Vista machines. I realise robocopy is the copy util to use with vista but I'm copying via a logon script with a mixed vista and XP environment. That is also why i'm using "documents and settings" rather than "users" in the path. The following command copies the file over properly without any prompts. xcopy "\servernamesharefilename" "C:users\%username%appdata......
View 9 Replies View RelatedSomehow, I have created two copies of all my files. (I have Vista Home Basic) I have no idea how I did this or when, or if this is what Vista does.
1: copy is under: Desktop - Hal, and
2: is under Desktop - Computer - Compaq (C - Users - Hal.
Should I delete one? If so, which one? It appears that they are exactly the same, but I haven't checked every file, and when I add or update/change a file it goes to both places. (I am the only one on the computer) They both have: AppData, and the Green color files, Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Music, Pictures, etc.
When I use "Search", it appears that the returned files properties are under 1 (Desktop - Hal) and when I use "Save As" for a file, it also goes to 1. Therefore, I think I should delete 2, but would I delete "Users" or just "Hal"? Am I getting into dangerous waters in doing this or should I just leave it alone?
Whenever I try to move any file or folder to another place other than the recycle bin, the file is copied, making me have to delete the original.
View 5 Replies View RelatedRight now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
I want to get rid of vista and install xp pro on my computer. I purchased a full install version of xp. Xp won't install over a newer version. I can't fdisk with vista. I can't figure out how to delete the primary partition and completely clean my hard drive.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a machine with Vista Home Basic sp2. I'm gonna give it to my grand daughter for Christmas and decided that I wanted to give it to her with Home Premium. My son had a copy of Vista Home Premium that he bought way back when it first came out -- before any service pack releases -- for a custom build that has long since been parted out. I tried to use that disk to upgrade from but it grays out the upgrade option because the version of Windows that I am trying to upgrade is newer than the one I am upgrading from. Since Home Premium is super to Home Basic I assume that the error is coming from the service pack difference.

My e-mails show the name, then the full e-mail address - not good if you are forwarding, or sending a copy. Perhaps it is not possible with Windows Vista?

(2*150GB HDD in Raid O =279GB ) That is i have used 45GB. The significant amounts used are Programme files 1.85GB,Users 2.54GB,Wndows Vista 7.81GB......11.2GB in total. Windows Old which i deleted with exception of some required files shows 96KB When i goto Windows old.. Properties and open PREVIOUS VERSIONS there are 5 versions each of about 6.4GB that is 32GB in total..Total usage is therefore 11.2 + 32=43.2GB Roughly what HDD( C )is showing.. My question is how can i get rid of these SHADOW COPIES..SYSTEM RESTORE is turned off.

I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:
1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter
(NOTE: if the command does not run change directories to c:windowssystem32) After the vssadmin has executed you will see results similar to the following:.....
The output above shows space used on the C: drive by System Restore is 237.419 MB. The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. The advantage is gaining extra free space. If you are concerned with losing the previous restore points, wait until you do not need them anymore before reducing the allocated space. If you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista or running a clean install and will need extra space, consider reducing the space after installation has completed. It is not recommended to disable System Restore. The capability to restore to a previous point in time or having the new Shadow Copy feature available can be a time saver if something goes wrong or if you delete a file. source: John Barnett Windows Vista Support I keep getting an error message. I seem to remember doing this before with my XP but can't remember how. Is there an easier way?

I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhile installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)

I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have encountered a very strange problem. I have downloaded two exe files recently. When I doubleclick on the exe file, instead of the application installing, what should happen but Word of all things opens with, in the case of one of them a box headed 'File Conversion - arw5setup.msi', and a similar wording in the second, asking me to select the encoding that makes my document readable. Whatever I select, the exe file then opens as a text file.
(The reference to an msi file is baffling as both files were exe files.) When it happened the first time I thought it was a corrupt file, but when it happened again it has to be that there is something wrong with my system. Is this a virus? Spybot has just come up with a clean slate ...
When I start installing it, it goes through the "Copying Files" stage instantly, and then hangs up at 0% on "Expanding Files". Then, anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes later, my screen goes black like it's not receiving a monitor signal anymore, and nothing else happens.
I Googled the problem and found a ton of threads here and elsewhere with the same issue, with a slight variation, but none of them had issues posted, and they were all relatively old.
MOD and TOD are informal names of tapeless video formats used by JVC (MOD and TOD), Panasonic (MOD only) and Canon (MOD only) in some models of digital camcorders. So, you may want to convert TOD files or .Mod files to your portable devices supporting formats, such as convert Mod to WMV, AVI, convert TOD to MPG etc for the iPod, iPhone, Zune PSP, BlackBerry, Creative Zen, etc.......
