XP Does Not Access VISTA

Mar 9, 2009

I used to have a network that consisted of: XP Pro / XP Home / Win 98 / Win 2000. they all saw each other and I was able to move & change files between them. I have had VISTA since 9/2008. however, my vista machine sees my XP machines and the shared folders but my XP machines don't see vista when I open network folder. I have everything shared, all permissions are full. I tried again to set up network on XP machine and it sees the vista shares but not allowed access.

Having Two Copies Of Vista On One Computer: Install Vista On The Smaller Drive, Boot With That, And Access Files On The Other Drive

Dec 25, 2008

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.

My question is-

Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).

Can't Access The Folders On The Vista

Mar 7, 2009

I have 2 XP machines and one new Vista machine. I have set up my wireless/wired network just fine. My 2 XP machines can share files and I can use either computer to access the other's files. Enter the Vista machine. I set up the network as requied and have a Workgroup. I can "see" the names of the files/folders being shared on all machines. I can use my Vista machine and move files back and forth, access them, etc. But when I sit at either of my XP machines, I can't access the folders on the Vista machine. When I try, I'm told "access denied." I've eliminated my firewalls, I have allowed full sharing. But nothing works.

Am on IE7 now but had Firefox for a while and suspect there are a few cookies left from Firefox I want delete manually; I know I can dump 'em all but I don't want to do that.

Vista Screens And Cannot Access The Bottom

Jun 28, 2008

I can't see all the text in certain Vista screens and cannot access the bottom of the screen (i.e. sounds, DPI settings). I couldn't install the Vista SP1 because I cannot access the area to check off "I Accept". These screens cannot be made larger and have no sidebar sliders. In DPI Scaling box (which also does not show all text), the "Default scale 96DPI" choice has a strikeout line through it and it is grayed out. The only choice is "Larger scale 120DPI". My monitor is about 4 years old, 17" LCD Flat, eTronic brand 1710. Monitor settings in Hardware is PNP Generic.

Vista Computer Can't Access The Shares

Jun 6, 2008

We have 3 W2k computers and a new vista computer. The Vista computer cannot access the shares on ONE of the Windows 2000 computers. The network is peer to peer and with the exception of the Vista computer accessing this particular Win 2000 computer, everyone can access everything. (we are trying to share a printer on the Win 2000 computer, but the computer rejects the user name/password from vista computer). I have triple checked the permissions and when you try to access the share, you get a user name/password error. You can access the same share from one of the other win 2000 computers using the same user info and it works fine. All Win 2000 machines are SP3, we had some issues on one computer with SP4 and never installed it on any of our computers. Is there an update or a setting on the Win 2000 computer that would only effect the vista computer accessing the 2000 shares?

Unable To Access The Drive From Windows Vista

Feb 8, 2009

Whenever I try to click on X: in My Computer I get the following: X: is not accessible. Access is denied. That's kinda funny given that earlier today, chkdsk /F was able to not only run on the drive but actually told me a few filenames (the records for those files had to be updated). I ran Ubuntu LiveCD and was able to access the drive just fine from that, as well. My question is... given all this, why am I unable to access the drive from Windows Vista? Sure, maybe the drive is going bad, but that doesn't explain why Ubuntu LiveCD and chkdsk /F can access it and Windows Vista cannot. So, short of just abandoning Window Vista all together in favor of Ubuntu, what can I do?

Vista & XP Networking; Access Shared Folders Between The Two Computers

Mar 23, 2008

I have a desktop with XP and a laptop I recently purchased with Vista on it. I have been trying to access shared folders between the two computers and have found it impossible access each other. Here are some things you should know:

- Network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and media sharing is turned ON. Printer sharing and Password protected sharing are OFF.

- Network is set to Private

- All computers are verified to be in the workgroup "WORKGROUP"

- Both computers can ping eachother

- Windows firewall is disabled on both computers. I have disabled and deleted Norton Anti Virus from both computers as well.

- Resolving through IP or Computer Name does NOT work

- Downloaded and installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on XP Computer from microsofts website
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4F01A31D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en

- Tried enabled NetBIOS on all computers as suggested by a forum post I read
