View 9 RepliesI'm reading your tutorial on returning Ownership. I want to do this for the "Windows Sidebar". Before I proceed, just wanted to confirm that the Owner of this Directory and all it's subdirectories should be "trusted installer" NOTE: My system is Vista Home Premium 64-bit Also, will this return the permissions back to what they were prior to my taking Ownership? I hope the answer is "yes". I tried the System Restore first, but apparently I changed this too long ago and it does not revert the Ownership back to it's original Ownership
View 7 Replies View RelatedI bought an Laptop with Vista Home Premium 32bit. If I install a FULL version of Windows 7 on this Laptop, can I use the Vista Home Premium 32bit key from the laptop on one of my other desktops? If so, would I talk to Microsoft or the manufacturer to get a disk without all the manufacturer "Bonus" software?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen the downloads are complete I get either one of two error messages: '...is not a valid win32 application' OR 'The set up files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the software.' I have attempted to install these programs at least three times and still get the above messages. Since the laptop is brand new, i doubt there is a virus on it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedNow as an Electrical Engineer I proved this point and upped my HP to 4GB w/3.25GB usable: If your chipset is Intel945 - as in my HP dv8408us & MANY NEWER HP laptops (Pavilions/MediaCenters), ignore HP claim of maixmum memory = 4GB. You can install 2GB+2GB sticks, you'll get 3.25GB usable by Windows, I know you waste about 1GB but it still makes sense. Intel945 chipset is hardwired for 32-bit adddresses so Windows whether it be 32 or 64bit is not a limitation, it's the chipset which is a limitation, STILL it can address 4GB, not 2GB as HP claimed on my laptop specs. I've done the same with IBM Thinkpads, where they claimed 512MB to be max 5 years ago, but I was running with 1GB. It appears idiots sometimes write these specs because 2GB laptop SDRAM modules were unavailable at that time at reasonable price/pinout?..............

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed a zip file called "take ownership" it deposits itself in the registry and allows you to take control of certain files. So, I completely removed most of the gadgets that came installed with the vista sidebar. All but one for some reason the Norton status gadget will not allow me to get rid of it. Is there a way to completely remove this gadget? Also if I completely remove the sidebar will it cause problems for my OS?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have two Acer desktop computers with Vista Business SP1 they both have blocked security permissions on the DVD Drive. There is a crossed out circle on the icon, and I cannot access any discs from the drive (it opens empty). "Access is denied" when I try to access it through the command prompt. In the Security Properties of the drive the Current Owners is "Unable to display current owner". I am unable to add a member or group to the ownership there. Is tells me "Unable to set new owner on DVD RW Drive (E. Access is denied". I'm accessing all this through the built-in Administrator account, and have opened the command prompt as Administrator. *I have been able to get in through Safe Mode in the Administrator account, but still have been unble to find a way to open this up for users and admins.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to help with a Vista Laptop where we are trying to rename a folder located in the users APP DATA folder. I've used the utility by Doug Knox (?) to take ownership and it shows full rights under the "Security" tab. Cannot rename a folder in the "Roaming" section and I need to do that to test a backup file restore. We keep getting "You need permission to do this..."
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis all started when I recently had some malwares/viruses roaming around my laptop one day. I had managed to get rid of it all but it left my Direct Console 2.0 useless (I have an ASUS G-50V, Vista Premium 64-bit). I've tried reinstalling it and it just wouldn't load, no error message or anything (it did show up on taskmanager but no window appeared).
So trying to find a solution on google I ended up installing .net Framework 4.0. However, after restarting i started getting a ton of error messages about files in the Program Files folder, and then I realized it had just completely disappeared (rather, all the files inside disappeared). First the error messages said the folder was "corrupt and unreadable."
I navigated to the folder and tried clicking it, which then another error message popped up saying "Access is denied." I tried almost every solution I found on google, changing ownership and such, but I still cannot open the folder. Moreover, I cannot repair or uninstall any program that is or has been in the Program Files which I'm assuming has to do with the permission issues. I noticed this when I ran the setup for Direct Console 2.0 and tried to repair it, only giving me an error saying "The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:Program Files (x86)ASUSOvClk.dll." But this also makes no sense to me as this is the x86 program files folder, which I can access.
I checked both of the folders and TrustedInstaller has ownership to both of them.
*Edit - I just checked the ASUS folder inside my Program Files (x86) where the only group assigned to it for security is "Everyone" and it had no access whatsoever.
I would like to know if there is any possible way to fix this and if the files inside the folder are still there as this is very frustrating to deal with. Most of my ASUS programs were in the Program Files, including the hotkey manager is really useful to me. Thanks a lot.
In case you need to know:
As for the what I did to deal with malwares and viruses I mentioned before, I did install Malwarebytes on another computer with updated definitions and loaded it on a flash drive here, removing whatever malwares it found. Even after this though (and this has been a consistent problem), mbam.exe would disappear after installing Malwarebytes regularly on my own laptop.
Thinking there was some virus or other malware laying around that it didn't pick up, I downloaded and installed AVG. I updated it and full scanned, which found more viruses and did fix the issue of mbam.exe disappearing after install. At this point I installed Malwarebytes again, updated, and scanned again, finding 1 or 2 trojans and I think at this point there shouldn't be any viruses/malwares causing issues, but of course I could be wrong.
I have 2 accounts on my Vista Home Premium machine. One is an admin account with password and the other is a standard account without password (UAC off). I have multiple internal hard drives some of which has folders that I want only my admin account to access. I have denied all permissions for the standard account to these folders.
When I login as the standard user and try to open these same folders I get a pop up message saying that I don't have permission to access them and to click “continue” for access. Then I get a second message saying the same thing but there is a clickable link at the bottom to the "security tab" and it's suggesting to use to gain access. Once I click on that I get another "You don't have permission to change security setting" message in the folder properties window under the security tab.
At the bottom of that window it's also suggesting to click on the "Advanced" button for special permissions which will lead to taking the ownership from the admin account under the "Owner" tab by clicking "Edit", thus allowing full access to the contents of those folders. Does that make sense to anyone? I also noticed that the standard account has the ability to change the type to an administrator account from “User Accounts” in Control panel, is that normal?
there must be many people who have moved all their mail from XP on one laptop to Vista mail on a new laptop. These two computers can see each other on the network. How can I easily move all history, contacts, folders etc from one to the other?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of Windows Vista Home Premium and the system operates faster than with my previous set-up with XP. After updating some of my drivers from Windows update, I am satified with VISTA so far except that I noticed that Windows identifies my video card as a standard VGA. When I down loaded the Nvidia driver from Toshiba (QG20disp-7882), it seemed to install and operate correctly however Internet Explorer would not start after the installation. I tried several times with the same results. To get the internet working again I had to Restore the sytem to the previous standard VGA set up. This standard VGA set-up limits the ability to see videos with Media Center. Has anyone run into this problem and how can I solve it. Incidentaly the
NVIDIA card has 128 MB dedicated memory so it should be able to run AERO but it is not available.
I would like to check the memory for errors BEFORE I load/install Windows Vista Home Premium x64 to avoid install hang-ups. Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have searched high and low for an easy way to revert back to XP from a Vista Premium OEM install. Of course the error message comes up after reboot "Unable To Load OS". I have tried even to dual boot with no success. I have used the following programs to revert back to XP:
-Vista Boot Pro
-EasyBCD
-Paragon Partition Manager Professional
-Acronis Disk Director Suite
Paragon worked but I was unable to dual boot and it left Vista intact on the partition. I deleted the Vista partition after a good XP install and when I rebooted I was faced with the "Unable To Load OS" error message. Does anyone have an EASY solution for this problem? As in a complete hard drive erase to clear the boot files?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've done a lot of searching tonight so I know I'm not the first one to have this issue, but I haven't found any kind of satisfactory solution. Here is my situation:
I have an HP Pavilion 6716 laptop with Quanta 30CC 79.26 mother board with a bus clock of 533 Mhz. I currently have two DDR2 PC2-5300 1 GB sticks of RAM in the machine (from factory) and all is well. I confirmed with HP that my machine can handle 4GB so I got two DDR2 667 2GB sticks of RAM (Kingston). If I put either one of the new sticks of RAM in I have no problems (first or second slot, makes no difference). But if i put both in I get the BSOD and first a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error, then a reboot and then a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error and that's all she wrote. Put back the original RAM and all is well. I've read all about the MS KB929777 and I've uninstalled the patch then re-installed and it made no difference. Is there anything anyone can tell me or am I just shafted at 2GB RAM?
I have this laptop. When the laptop is at Idle the CPU ranges from 60% to 100% is this normal for this type of laptop? Is there any way that I can resduce the CPU usage that Vista is using I have closed down unessecery programs that I dont need.

i haven't mentioned this since i have reinstalled vista, but i have noticed that, since then, the windows experience index scores have gone down 1 or 2 points. i have installed all the latest drivers using drivermax but little performance has been improved. and it seems that the gaming graphics have let me down on wei. also, the second lowest score on wei is the aero performance. it is 4.0 on the aero because i have recently changed the theme to windows classic for better performance. i have changed back to aero, and haven't bothered the update the wei score. here is a snip of the wei score right now-. i remember the score being up in the 5's but now, it is down. just wondering if it was to do with reinstalling vista by any chance? i'm not asking for a solution-but you can give me one if u can- just want to know what is causing the laggyness. look at my system specs to see why i think my computer should have better performance.

View 9 Replies View RelatedBut I just want to be sure that selling it unformatted would be safe.
For instance, I am planning on making a new admin account on the computer, and from there I am going to delete the CURRENT admin account which I'm using now, by going to control panel > users/accounts > (admin account name) > Delete (would you like to keep account files? Answer: No).
And the buyer who will recieve the laptop will have access to the newly created account, and there will be no other account on the computer besides maybe the guest account (and another wierd Admin account that is somehow above all and I never used before) and I would have deleted this account via the control panel....am I safe after having done this? Meaning can the buyer still somehow recover private information (saved passwords, files, etc.) after I've deleted my account?
Reason I'm asking is, this computer already has the Dell drivers and downloads installed to make it as good as it is...and if I format with a Windows Vista CD, everything will be lost and I have to re-download drivers etc. It just makes the computer more valuable when selling.
