Searching In Windows Mail, Functionality
Mar 23, 2008
I frequently look for email messages. The search in outlook express was robust..I could look for a term in the message or the subject etc. there is no categorization of the search and it only seems to look in the subject/sender/recipient fields. Where are the advanced search functions?

Can someone provide some help in searching Windows Mail? When I used OE under XP, I could search for a subject or author, obtain a list, click on the one I want -- and that would take me to the desired thread. When I do the same thing under Windows Mail, I am only able to read the specific message I click on. If I want to read the whole thread, I still have to scroll down a long list in an attemp to find it. Surely, I must be missing something? How can I go back to the functionality of locating the thread? I am using Vista Home Premium (full edition, not OEM).

It seems there're big changes in Vista Search GUI (as opposed to XP), which Microsoft in its infinite wisdom imposed on us. Did they try to copy this functionality from Mac, but couldn't do it right? In XP, you could right-click on folder name and select Search UI from context menu. Advanced search was part of the Search UI. I have a simple Vista Search related question: Let's say there's directory: c:somefolder - how do I (recursively) search contents of all files (in the above folder) for some string?

I mentioned in another post that I haven't used Windows Updates in two years and that it's not crazy. The vast variety of Updates issues revolve around obscure fixes that affect only a small fraction of users. This supposedly excludes some of the security fixes. Upon turning on updates, my machine was immediately infected with spyware. Some of us are not programmers and can't spend alot of time trying to make windows work. We could ask then after restoring our computers a half dozen times, why wasn't it infected before turning on updates?! My computer, with no spyware blocker and without a single update in two years, didn't not show a single instance of spyware previously. This seems to me to be a valid question. The better question is: Why is the functionality of my computer affected? You buy software and it comes out of a box. You don't expect it to change it's "charter" over the internet or while you are not watching so that you don't know from one moment to the next if it's secure or not.

Did you forget activate your computer within 30 days of installing and it is now stuck in reduced functionality Mode? Are you not yet ready to activate your copy and want to extend the activation period another 30 days or for longer? Using a slick Internet Explorer trick you can break out of Reduced Functionality mode and run the commands required to reset your activation period and recover use of your computer. It starts when you log in and shown this error screen instead of taken to your desktop. Your only options are to activate now or enter reduced functionality mode. In reduced functionality mode ...

How do I search the contents of multiple documents and spreadsheets using Vista's search? In previous versions the office Assistant could search the contents of files for information, providing the user with a list of documents containing the search term.

Still trying to figure out Vista as my work computer was recently upgraded from XP. In XP if I wanted to search a network drive for a file or folder with a partial known name, I'd use the search tool and it returned results fairly quickly. In Vista, the network admins have indexing disabled for the network because they don't want hundreds of computers constantly scanning for changes. Which is fine, but now when I want to find a file, I *think* this thing is scanning through every file, *name and contents* for my search term, which makes it far, far slower. In fact, in the time it took me to search this newsgroup, read about 10 posts, and then open this window to type my query, Explorer has still not located the document I want. (I know it exists because I was just looking at it from a coworker's screen.). I *could* just ask him what the path is, but that wouldn't be "teaching a man to fish" as it were.

When I use Vista's "advanced search" function, I can specify location, date, size, name, tags, and author. Is there any way to search by file attributes, e.g., to find all files with the archive bit set?

I'm having problems with Search in Vista. I want to locate all files that have a certain extension, such as .pst. In previous versions of Windows, this was simple, but not so in Vista. Previously, all I had to do in Search was to search for *.pst to see a list of all .pst files. In Vista, what do I have to do to find all .pst files on my hard drive?

When I do Ctrl-F3, the page is blank. Not only that, they are all time-stamped early this morning, before I started the machine and after the time I shut down last night (after checking email.) Emails that are time-stamped after the time I logged on are OK, it just appears to be ones that were downloaded when I first logged on. Fortunately, they all seem to be SPAM or worse, and I'm pretty sure I'm the one who deleted them, since none of them match any of my rules and I don't usually delete messages from the Junk Mail folder. Nevertheless, it bugs me.Is it possible that the lack of compacting has anything to do with this? I had turned off the automatic compacting out of habit, never having trusted OE to do that at shutdown, preferring to do it manually. Now, every week or two, I change the setting to "1" and shut WM down, but I've been lax over the last month or so. On that note, is there a way to initiate compacting without going through such gyrations? Or is WM not so touchy about this operation as OE? Should I leave it enabled? If so, what's the recommended interval?

If I use "start search" and look for something that might be in program files/email/web history/etc then I can type in a couple of chars and it's up there in the results. I have a folder of MP3 music and if I search for something (in the title) I get no results. The folder is marked as "Index this folder for faster searching" so why does it not get included in the search?

I've had a problem for a while now. Every time I open Windows Mail up, or the news groups, I get a message saying Windows mail isn't my default mail program, and asks if I want it to be. I click yes every time, but I will still get this message when I open Windows Mail again the next day. Everything's works OK after I click this message. No other errors or anything.

How stable is Windows Live Mail? Does it convert your old Windows Mail messages and keep storing messages on your computer, or only online? And what about Contacts? Is there something good to read to read about moving from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail? The material at is pretty superficial.

What, if any, inferences can be drawn from the fact that there are typically three times more posts about Windows Mail (WM) than Windows Live Mail (WLM). Could it be that:
(a) WM is more troublesome than WLM (in view of the greater complexity of WLM this seems improbable)?
(b) Many more people use WM (seems probable - I wonder what the figures are)?
(c) A higher proportion of technically savvy users are likely to be early adopters of Windows 7 who have to find an alternative to WM. Some then migrate to a non-Microsoft email client such as Thunderbird, while those that try WLM find they can master it with few problems (plausible)?
My feeling is that there seem to be an awful lot of folk hanging on to WM and that they might be put off updating to Windows 7 because neither WM (nor Outlook Express) will not be available (at least not in a securely supported version) to run on it. I am cross-posting this to both newsgroups and suggest that replies go to WM as it has the larger following.
