When i start up my Computer (Acer Aspire 5738G-644G32MN) he automatically starts searching for a network. To stop it, i have to push the button on the left top of the keyboard that sits under the power button.I am looking for a method to disable this.

Vista Home Premium user - MS Narrator starts automatically at start up. I went through the Start>Control Panel>Ease of Access>Make Computer Easier to See and made sure the Turn Narrator On was NOT checked. I even turned it on, applied changes, then turned it back off and applied changes again. Multiple times, restarting and restarting. Yet I still get to hear Anna's lovely voice at start up.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI want to connect to my broadband Internet connection automatically whenever my system starts up. In XP I did this by creating a shortcut to the connection and placing it in the startup menu. However, Vista Home Premium apparently does not allow me to create a shortcut to an Internet connection. When I right-click on the connection, the menu offers only Disconnect, Status and Properties. The equivalent menu in XP included the option to Create Shortcut. how to launch a connection at startup in Vista? Or is this another of the simple conveniences that Microsoft has decided to make impossible?
View 9 Replies View RelatedStill trying to figure out Vista as my work computer was recently upgraded from XP. In XP if I wanted to search a network drive for a file or folder with a partial known name, I'd use the search tool and it returned results fairly quickly. In Vista, the network admins have indexing disabled for the network because they don't want hundreds of computers constantly scanning for changes. Which is fine, but now when I want to find a file, I *think* this thing is scanning through every file, *name and contents* for my search term, which makes it far, far slower. In fact, in the time it took me to search this newsgroup, read about 10 posts, and then open this window to type my query, Explorer has still not located the document I want. (I know it exists because I was just looking at it from a coworker's screen.). I *could* just ask him what the path is, but that wouldn't be "teaching a man to fish" as it were.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI uninstalled a program through the Control Panel -> Programs and Features. This seemed to remove all signs of the application from the C:Program Files folder, but I was left with the application with sub folders on the Start Menu/All Programs. Since I didn't need this anymore, I tried right clicking on it and selected Delete - this resulted in a dialog 'You need to confirm this operation - Continue/Skip/Cancel' - I selected Continue - the dialog box disappears but nothing else happens - the menu entries remained.
Looking through various Vista newsgroups, I found a 'Take Ownership' registry thing - I installed this. Retrying the above and after 'Taking Ownership' of the start menu entry (entries), has exactly the same results - the references to the application still remain.
Next I tried search for the application name and this led me to the folder 'ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms' and I tried Delete there both without then with the Take Ownership - still the same dialog which when clicking Continue results in no action...........
Problem is network bandwidth as measured by the speed test(s) will decrease over time without any changes being made -- it does not matter what time of day either. It is a Vista PC running SP2 and hard wired to a Linksys router (Wireless-G model) and I am a Comcast customer with 30mbps service. Maybe I should mention this PC sits idle for most of the day before the family comes home from school. All of the XP systems in the house do NOT have this problem.
As you can see over the course of 5 days the download speed drops into the 2-3 mbps range (and the upload speeds are greater than the download speeds !! ) The 12mbps measurement was taken after the reboot. The only fix I have found is rebooting the machine --- then performance is as expected for a day or so before it starts to drop again.
I recently received email from MS inviting me to download IE 8. The screen says, If the download doesn't start automatically, click here. when I do, on the next screen I select country and OS (Vista Ultimate with latest updates.) Now I end up with the first screen again. I'm in an endless loop!

View 4 Replies View RelatedEverytime I reboot the laptop I loose the ability to connect to the internet although the laptop confirms a connection to the wireless network router.I click "Diagnose this connection" and choose "Automatically get new IP Settings for the network adapter" I have internet connectivity restored.
The laptop is an HP dv6755ca, less then one week old, and has been checked to be sure all drivers and updates have been installed. I have run anti-virus and checked for malware/spyware. The network setup is 1. PC connected via ethernet, 1. wireless laptop and 1. smc8014w-g wireless gateway.
Although the setup was walked through with me by the technician (over the phone) I'm not yet ruling out a faulty set-up in the 192.168.0.1 site [except that I have had no issues with the wired connection].
I am running Vista x64 on a wireless network, WPA, TKIP. The network connects and works fine when you connect manually, but even if you check the "automatically connect" checkbox, after turning off the computer you have to connect manually again and the checkbox is unchecked. Had an XP machine with wireless before and this was never a problem. Have a Vista x32 connected with Ethernet cable that has no problem getting on network automatically either. Router is WRT54GS (I know it's old), but my computer is not totally incompatible if I get a good connection and good speed on the network. Seems that I am not the only one having this problem on this forum, but the other cases seemed somewhat different?

There is no option within the Bluetooth settings and it doesn't show up under MSCONFIG. how to keep it from loading at startup? I don't use it and don't plan on using it, however I do not want to delete it from the system.

1. non-Microsoft software updates will require you to completely disable BitLocker before you start
2. System upgrades will require you to decrypt the volume
3. Only volume containing OS and system files will be encrypted. Other volumes are nto encrypted by bitlocker but can be encrypted using EFS. Will there be any support for bitlocker using certificates issued by Active Directory enabled PKI services? (microsoft certificate services)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am the only user on my laptop. I accepted the Toshiba settings when I bought the machine, but I realise that there are a number of features that are disabled that (as an administrator) I should be able to use. for example:
1. Windows Defender will show me the details of start-up programs but not allow me to remove/enable/disable anything (the buttons are greyed-out/disabled).
2. There are some folders (e.g. in my internet favourites) which are read-only and when I switch read-only off, it ignores what I've done - they remain read-only.
All I want to know is how to get rid of the network on Vista and start again. In my own way I think I was happier with the problems of W98 as I felt I had some control. I have 4 computers networked on XP. I'm new to Vista. Started the new system, got connection to the internet with no problems. Allocated a workgroup name of WORKGROUP, when I really wanted WG (the name of my existing group on XP) I can see the Vista computer from my XP computers, but cannot see the XP computers from Vista. Also, for example the folder "Program Files" on C of the Vista computer has been shared to all (no restrictions) and this shows up on the XP computers, but they are still refused access. I don't seem to be able to delete anything in Vista. I want only to delete WORKGROUP in Vista and I'll start again (with more care). Meantime I have started to read this NG and might find answer.
