I accidentally clicked connect every time, and now when trying to install my webcam it's downloading a totally random driver that doesnt work with skype and doesnt seem to be for my webcam?!

My computer is running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit, service pack 1. I have a DLink wireless router, model WBR-1310, hardware version B1, firmware version 2.02. The issue I have is my internet connection will randomly go away (the globe will disappear and my network will go local only). This can be while I'm in the middle of doing something online, or sometimes when I get back to the computer from being away for a few hours the connection is gone. I'll have to randomly disconnect/reconnect the connection to the router to reestablish my internet. I've disabled all sleep modes/screen savers/etc. I just want to keep this connection live 24/7. I would like to know if there is any way to fix this so that my connection becomes more stable.

But in Vista Home Premium 32 bit, I cannot open the Group Policy Editor. When I type GPEDIT.MSC from startRun and then hit the Enter key, the error message says soemthing like GPEDIT.MSC does not exists. After I downloaded the Toolkit, I run the IE8BlockerToolkit.EXE and it extracted 4 files:

IE80Blocker.cmd
IE80BlockerHelp.htm
IE80BlockerHelp-GPFilteringDialog.jpg
I double clicked on IE80Blocker.cmd and then I cannot proceeed to the next step to setup the IE8 Blocker Template (IE80Blocker.adm) May I ask if anyone can shed some light on this? How can I install this Toolkit to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 8 in Vista Home Premium 32 bit properly?

View 9 Replies View RelatedStill trying to figure out Vista as my work computer was recently upgraded from XP. In XP if I wanted to search a network drive for a file or folder with a partial known name, I'd use the search tool and it returned results fairly quickly. In Vista, the network admins have indexing disabled for the network because they don't want hundreds of computers constantly scanning for changes. Which is fine, but now when I want to find a file, I *think* this thing is scanning through every file, *name and contents* for my search term, which makes it far, far slower. In fact, in the time it took me to search this newsgroup, read about 10 posts, and then open this window to type my query, Explorer has still not located the document I want. (I know it exists because I was just looking at it from a coworker's screen.). I *could* just ask him what the path is, but that wouldn't be "teaching a man to fish" as it were.

Not only that, they are all time-stamped early this morning, before I started the machine and after the time I shut down last night (after checking email.) Emails that are time-stamped after the time I logged on are OK, it just appears to be ones that were downloaded when I first logged on. Fortunately, they all seem to be SPAM or worse, and I'm pretty sure I'm the one who deleted them, since none of them match any of my rules and I don't usually delete messages from the Junk Mail folder. Nevertheless, it bugs me.Is it possible that the lack of compacting has anything to do with this? I had turned off the automatic compacting out of habit, never having trusted OE to do that at shutdown, preferring to do it manually. Now, every week or two, I change the setting to "1" and shut WM down, but I've been lax over the last month or so. On that note, is there a way to initiate compacting without going through such gyrations? Or is WM not so touchy about this operation as OE? Should I leave it enabled? If so, what's the recommended interval?

When I used OE under XP, I could search for a subject or author, obtain a list, click on the one I want -- and that would take me to the desired thread. When I do the same thing under Windows Mail, I am only able to read the specific message I click on. If I want to read the whole thread, I still have to scroll down a long list in an attemp to find it. Surely, I must be missing something? How can I go back to the functionality of locating the thread? I am using Vista Home Premium (full edition, not OEM).

I have a folder of MP3 music and if I search for something (in the title) I get no results. The folder is marked as "Index this folder for faster searching" so why does it not get included in the search?
View 4 Replies View RelatedUsing my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista). Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it ransfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky). Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:
Installed all updates including SP2.
Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus.
Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i)
Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia
Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4
Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router.
I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out..........
Running Vista on an HP...When I get the pop up to compact the mail I click OK and it gets about 3 quarters of the way thru and I get the message Windows Mail has stopped working and Windows is searching for an answer. The answer was DEP (Data Execution Protection)was shutting it down to protect my computer..What's the problem??? Norton internet Security up to date and nothing found with complete system scan..Vista up to date as well.

Clicking 'Internet' icon gets me the message 'Internet Explorer has stopped working:". I tried 'restore' but it is not working either. I get the message 'an unspecified error occurred during system restore'. I scanned with AVG and the files it scanned are clean. I have a 'restore' DVD made by the computer vendor but when I stick it in the CD drive nothing happens. The computer is a 1 year old ACER with VISTA home premium preinstalled. View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm on Vista x64 Home Premium (SP1), and I have a problem. When my laptop got shipped with Vista, I disabled UAC on the spot because of various software incompatibility. Recently I have been led to enable it again because of some failing software. It didn't solve the problem and thus I decided to disable it again. However, this time, when I go on to User Accounts and I click on the "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off", it brings up the popup that asks me whether I want to proceed. I click "Yes", expecting the dialog box to show up so that I can successfully disable the UAC. But the dialog box never came up. The UAC popup just closed and the computer remained motionless. I tried rebooting, and manually deactivating UAC using command-line prompts which yielded "Access Denied".
And now, I cannot use my computer effectively, as most of my software is uncompatible with UAC and fails to run. Is there any way to fix this ? I only have one account that is being marked as Administrator, and it seems quite strange that I can't set UAC back off again. Google search didn't help me a lot either - most links only tell me how to actually disable it, which fails on my system....
