View 4 RepliesOn the desktop side: WinXP Home, all updates etc in place On the laptop side: WinVista Home Premium, all updates etc in place. I have a wireless ADSL router connected by cable to the desktop machine. The laptop connects to the router via a wireless connection. The laptop has full access to everything on the desktop machine. The desktop machine has limited access only to certain folders on the laptop because that's the way Vista is. I have things set up so that from the laptop (Vista) machine I can open, run, copy, move, and delete files on the desktop (XP) machine.
The recycle bins on both machines work properly. If I delete files on the XP side they go to the XP recycle bin and if I delete files on the Vista side they go to the Vista recycle bin. I noticed yesterday however that when I delete XP-side files from the Vista side, they aren't sent to the recycle bins on either machine. This seems very strange. Is it by design? Is there a setting I need to set to have such files sent to a recycle bin? Where do files go when you delete them over a (wireless) network?
All I want to know is how to get rid of the network on Vista and start again. In my own way I think I was happier with the problems of W98 as I felt I had some control. I have 4 computers networked on XP. I'm new to Vista. Started the new system, got connection to the internet with no problems. Allocated a workgroup name of WORKGROUP, when I really wanted WG (the name of my existing group on XP) I can see the Vista computer from my XP computers, but cannot see the XP computers from Vista. Also, for example the folder "Program Files" on C of the Vista computer has been shared to all (no restrictions) and this shows up on the XP computers, but they are still refused access. I don't seem to be able to delete anything in Vista. I want only to delete WORKGROUP in Vista and I'll start again (with more care). Meantime I have started to read this NG and might find answer.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried post on maintenance etc but got no advice Any ideas as to why I suddenly have this need to keep resetting the network adapter via network sharing? (I am sure its associated here) I have just changed ISP and their supplied router is both wireless and Ethernet. My previous was Ethernet only. I only use Ethernet at the moment but network
sharing keeps identifying two networks. I cant merge or delete as that option is greyed out.
Not able to find wireless networks automatically even if the option 1) connect automatically to the network in this range is enabled during the startup ,the selection made is not remembered and it is not able to find the network.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
I'm using Vista Home Premium and Windows Update tells me I'm up to date.
Every so often the Network icon in the System Tray tells me that it is not connected to a Network (by displaying a red X) though I can clearly see that I am.
I'm trying to network my new Optiplex 740 with Vista Business (32bit), and Norton 360, to my old Euro PC with W2K Pro. and SystemWorks, using basic Belkin /Realtek cards and yellow ethernet cable. My broadband connection is through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card installation.
My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to either the other computer or broadband connection.........
I have bought DD a laptop for Christmas and thought I'd get it all set up beforehand. I already have a wireless network here at home, with 2 desktops running xp) and a macbook, they connect via a belkin wireless modem router. Vista however, doesn't even find a network, I get a message saying the network cable is nplugged. Its wireless enabled and the switch is on
View 9 Replies View RelatedOne usb ethernet adapter for internet connection through an old router, one for a Linksys Wireless G router hard wired to remote security cameras sums up the problem where one cancels the other out. This is a problem for XP, Vista, and even 7 beta while the primary system still runs XP. The dsl connection is through an old dsl setup using a usb adapter while the Linksys pci adapter card or usb adapter once installed becomes the default network adapter.
The wireless router itself is plugged with the RJ-45 ethernet adapter directly into the main controller/dvr box for live wireless feed to the main XP system or this one as a second means along with direct plug in to a tv set in the room where the main box is located. In XP, Vista, and even the later 7 beta the same problem of running two adapters without conflict is the main question needing a working solution. This thread is intended to tax the most network familar people here.
The landlord runs the main XP system with eventual plans to upgrade to Vista while this system serves as a testing machine a good deal of the time explaining multiple OSs as a rule. The router and adapters are in working order not seeing any defects while canceling the original dsl adapter out when installed. That takes out the online connection in the process.
Bought a Freecom Network Drive (LINK) from PC World today and got it set up and it seemed to be working fine on my Vista computer until I tryed to get it set up on my XP computer. It seemed to get setup ok but then the whole thing just stopped working. The hard drive spines and it works fine when plugged in as USB device but when trying to connect it to the network it simply does not show up. I have a Belkin G+MIMO Router and the Network Hard Drive is a Freecom Network Storage Hard Drive 250GB
Just returned from holiday and while we were away I changed my laptop network in vista from private to public as advised and the internet worked fine. Now at home I cant connect to my router, and I get a message saying that the details held on the computer is not the same as the router. Also there is no customise function being shown on the network and sharing centre screen to switch back to private network. Ive tried everything to set up a connection, even a new one, but the same message appears all the time.

View 6 Replies View RelatedEvery Windows power user knows the command line is “the place” to get serious work done. The new Start Menu search box in Windows Vista opens the door to a whole new level of command line possibilities. One utility called Start++ extends the Start Menu search box to add even more features allowing you to use shortcuts to launch web sites and processes.
Would you like to search Google from your start menu search box? Just type g followed by your query such as “g tweak vista”. How about doing a quick search on Wikipedia? Type w and your query in the search box. The possibilities are endless because you can create custom shortcuts just like the examples above.
On top of web shortcuts, you can also create application links that will launch an app and open a file. Almost anything is possible with a little customization of the Start++ utility shown below....
ok so this problem has been going on for awhile now but has gotten worse somehow... before i could not access my vista computer upstairs from my xp computer downstairs. i've made sure the settings are what they should be on the vista computer since i can easily access my xp computer from the vista computer. now the problem has gotten worse by that i can't access my xp computer from the vista computer or vice versa so now i can't transfer files from each computer. i need to use my external drive or a flash drive.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have previously posted regarding the large volume of bits and pieces that
are under my (user) folder on the drive. 89,000 plus. All of this came about
by trying to restore from a backup created from a Windows Vista Ultimate
computer. My new one, at present is Windows Vista Home Premium.
I finally figured how to sort the files by file type (not set up that way as
in XP). When I set about to delete a thousand or so, it never seems to
complete.
Is there a way to speed this operation up? I have now spent 5 hours at it.
When I try to delete certain files it tells me I need permission, does anyone know why this is?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI kept on getting a bootmgr message so I just reverted back to Vista Home premium 64-bit and I only have 191 GB free of 580 GB. I believe most of it is in the backup in C drive but I can't delete any of it. Its keep saying "This folder is shared with other people. If you delete this folder, it will no longer be shared. Continue" and when I click continue it says the same thing. Then when I click continue again it says "destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this action". How do I delete it?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI use an external hard drive for backups, and I back up once a week. One of the old backups allows the restoration of a document that I want permanently deleted from my system. I wanted to delete the backup for that date to eliminate that possibility, and I deleted the backup's folder in the external hard drive (disk F, but Vista's "Backup and Restore Center" still allows the backup for that date and the restoration of the file I want permanently deleted. I can't find the backup's folder in Windows.
How can I delete the old backup from Vista's "Backup and Restore Center"? If that's not possible, how can I prevent the restoration of the file I want permanently deleted?
I downloaded a demo called Overclocked using ReGet Deluxe. When downloaded it comes as a Zip file which also had a file accompanying it. This is the file that I cannot delete. The extension says its a zip file but in properties it just says File as a file type & a size of 0 bytes. Its located in my storage drive D When trying to delete the message I get is: This is no longer located in D:. Verify the items location and try again. Cannot move, rename or send to? It just comes up with the same message as above. UAC is disabled. Tried Unlocker but doesnt work on Vista x64. (worked superb in XP) Used Regseeker and removed any traces that came up with. (Works ok in Vista but not 100% stable?) Tried Regedit and removed all traces of Overclocked in there. here is got to be a way of removing files like this without everyones solution of formatting. Surly its not as drastic as that?

I have a folder "D:Program Files (x86)" with a bunch of software. I was able to delete all of it manually, but a few folders, created by adobe acrobat.
I am logged in as Administrator (actual administrator, not user with admin. perm.)
UAC is disabled
Drive is owned by this acct.
I was able to delete everything manually inside "AdobeAcrobat", but "D:Program Files (x86)AdobeAcrobat 9.0ResourceCMap" just would not delete, getting a "You need permission to perform this action" message.
Folders and Files are set as "Read Only" and when i'm trying to uncheck, i'm getting "You will need to provide Administrator permission to change these attributes" message, after clicking "Continue" i'm getting "An error occured applying attributes to the file" "...filename..." "Access is denied".

a) cant delete it - says "could not find this item. this is no longer located in _____. Verify the items location and try again.
b) downloaded the take ownership reg and i right click, take ownership, try to delete, gives me same error saying cant find file
c) i right click, properties, go to security, and it says "the requested security information is either unavailable or cant be displayed"
Windows Vista Ultimate 64.I right click and hit delete on a file and I get Item not found
This is no longer located in C:UsersJustinDownloads verify the items location and try again.
The file is a MS Word docx, downloaded from my college's Blackboard system.I booted into safe mode (under the admin account) and ended up with the same message.I was told this could possible be an issue with Temporary Internet files and IE - I use Firefox. I cleared out the TIF on both browsers and the file is still there.
