Can I set up network of two computers with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista Home Basic with FireWire? How both systems will detect connection of two computers with FireWire cable? Does that connection make possible file exchange?
View 6 RepliesI have a Vista Home Premium Laptop and a Vista Ultimate PC. Both are connected to the same network and workgroup. The laptop is wireless and the PC is wired. If I connect the laptop to the PC with a crossover cable I have no problems with the network. Both computers have sharing enabled for all but Password and Media.
I am very new to Vista. I have a small home network. The three XP machines on the network use static IP addresses. One of the XP machines shares a printer. When I open Windows Explorer and click on Network the only computer listed is the Vista Business machine.
I cannot find any way to search for a computer by entering the computer name or IP address as I can in Explorer on XP. I have no idea what the search box in the upper right corner is supposed to do but it does not work. As soon as I type any character in the box it says "No items match your search." I can ping the XP machine from a command window on the vista machine. If I do DIR \COMPUTERNAMEPRINT$ at the command prompt the directory on the XP machine is listed. I can see the Vista machine in Explorer on the XP machine. What must I do to allow Vista to see the other computers on the network?
I have 2 computers connected at my home (A PC running XPsp2 wired connection and laptop Vista Home Premium via wireless connection). The connection is working fine and I can see the desktop PC from my laptop network page. Is there a way I can find the IP address of the desktop without manually having to go there? I can do it for my laptop by going to network and sharing center >> view status etc. Is there a way preferably without using cmd to find the IP of a remote computer connected via LAN?

I have ensured that my fire wall is set to allow the other pc's access. I have four XP machines and one additional Vista and I can see the xp machines on the other Vista box. I am at a lose as to what to do.

1. "Connect to the internet", but the laptop is already connected to the internet
2. "Set up a wireless router or access point" - I don't want this
3. "Manually connect to a wireless network" - I want to connect to a non-wireless network
4. "Set up a wireless ad hoc network" - I use wires!
5. "Set up a dial up connection" - I have a broadband connection already working
6. "Connect to a workplace" - I want to make the laptop part of the home network
Which of these options should I choose, or should I do something totally different?
Two PC's, a Linksys WRT54GS router and an ADSL modem connected via ethernet cables. Internet works fine on both computers but file sharing not quite well. I am able to reach the contents of shared folders by IP, using form "\192.168.1.xxx" or "\computername" but I cannot see the computers in Network window. I have installed LLTD on computer runs xp. I also have got the lastest service packs (vista: SP1, xp: SP3) and the latest updates installed on both computers. This 64 bit vista is newly installed, because of new hardwares (mobo, cpu, ram). I used a 32 bit version before and the sharing stuff worked fine. XP system is the same, I did not touch it except LLTD. Both computer belongs to the same workgroup. Of course in vista I have enabled File sharing, Network discovery and Public folder sharing. I have set a Private Network. I can access other computer's content by typing IPs or computer names in Run dialog box, but I cannot see them (only local computer) in Network window.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a home wireless net work consisting of three computers. I have had this network set up and running for about three years (so I am not "brand new" at this). However, what has changed is the fact that now one of my computers runs Vista - the other two run Windows XP Home (formerly, of course, all three were running Win XP). I am sure that my problem lies within the fact that Vista is more secure and there by is putting up some "road blocks" that I am unfamiliar with.
On my VISTA computer - I can currently open and share files with my other two XP computers without any problem. On my XP computers - this is where I am having my problems - I have not been able to access my "shared" files residing on the Vista computer.

I have 2 Vista machines and 1 XP media center machine which were all visible to each other and between which files could be shared. Today I installed the MS updates for the Vista machines and could not see other computers on one of the Vista machines (Desktop Vista machine), nor could the other two machines see the Desktop Vista machine. I system restored back to a day previous and the same situation prevails. Strangely, the other Vista machine (Laptop Vista) can see the XP machine, and the LT Vista was updated and remains so.All machines are discoverable and all have shared folders.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have cable internet, that runs to a Linksys BFESR41 router, one hardwire goes out to the PC. One hardwire goes out to the internet connection for a Linksys WRT54G, which then provides the internet access for both laptops. Linksys tech support helped me get internet to all three computers. They had me do a MAC clone on the wired router and PC to get internet working on the PC. Then they had me hook the wireless router to the wired router via the wireless router internet "in" connection. I want to network all three computers so that I can access files on each computer, as well as share a printer that is connected to the PC. As of now I have internet on all three computers, but they do not "find/see" each other.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a home office network with one new Dell laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic which I bought a couple of weeks ago, one desktop with Windows XP Pro and one older laptop with Windows XP Pro. The laptops are connected wirelessly, the desktop is using a wired Ethernet connection.
Obviously, there have been never a problem with XP machines. Initially, the Vista machine was also able to connect to everybody else. I didn't even bother to look at the settings because everything worked. Then I went to a business trip, and connected to other networks, including wireless public ones in the airports. When I came back, I was unable to share files or even see other computers on the LAN. The internet connection is working fine though. Oh yes, and I also installed a couple of updates, probably some of those constituting Service Pack 1 as well.
When I checked the network, to my surprise, it turned out that it became "Public" (could this be "guilt by association" - the airport wireless networks are public, so my home network is public, too?). I changed it to "Private". Didn't help. Checked shares, made sure that the users have the same passwords. Ditto. I deleted the history of the airport networks. Still the same.........
I can't connect my laptop (Vista home premium 32 with wireless connection) and Desktop (XP professional with cable ethernet connection ) in local network through wireless router D-Link (DI-524). Please help.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am networking Vista and XP. Everything seems to be working EXCEPT the XP computer does not show up in in the Vista network folder. I can access the XP computer by entering \computername in the "start search" box, after which I see all the XP shared files and can access the files as expected. When I run the "map complete network" function, the network map is correct and shows the switch, XP computer, and Vista computer. The XP side works 100%
The only problem is that on the Vista side when you open an explorer window and click on Network, the XP computer doesn't show up. For purposes of debugging, both firewalls are off. Authentication is set to NTLMv1 level, and the XP LLTD patch has been applied.
I have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
I'm using Vista Home Premium and Windows Update tells me I'm up to date.
Every so often the Network icon in the System Tray tells me that it is not connected to a Network (by displaying a red X) though I can clearly see that I am.
I'm trying to network my new Optiplex 740 with Vista Business (32bit), and Norton 360, to my old Euro PC with W2K Pro. and SystemWorks, using basic Belkin /Realtek cards and yellow ethernet cable. My broadband connection is through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card installation.
My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to either the other computer or broadband connection.........

View 9 Replies View RelatedOne usb ethernet adapter for internet connection through an old router, one for a Linksys Wireless G router hard wired to remote security cameras sums up the problem where one cancels the other out. This is a problem for XP, Vista, and even 7 beta while the primary system still runs XP. The dsl connection is through an old dsl setup using a usb adapter while the Linksys pci adapter card or usb adapter once installed becomes the default network adapter.
The wireless router itself is plugged with the RJ-45 ethernet adapter directly into the main controller/dvr box for live wireless feed to the main XP system or this one as a second means along with direct plug in to a tv set in the room where the main box is located. In XP, Vista, and even the later 7 beta the same problem of running two adapters without conflict is the main question needing a working solution. This thread is intended to tax the most network familar people here.
The landlord runs the main XP system with eventual plans to upgrade to Vista while this system serves as a testing machine a good deal of the time explaining multiple OSs as a rule. The router and adapters are in working order not seeing any defects while canceling the original dsl adapter out when installed. That takes out the online connection in the process.
Bought a Freecom Network Drive (LINK) from PC World today and got it set up and it seemed to be working fine on my Vista computer until I tryed to get it set up on my XP computer. It seemed to get setup ok but then the whole thing just stopped working. The hard drive spines and it works fine when plugged in as USB device but when trying to connect it to the network it simply does not show up. I have a Belkin G+MIMO Router and the Network Hard Drive is a Freecom Network Storage Hard Drive 250GB
Just returned from holiday and while we were away I changed my laptop network in vista from private to public as advised and the internet worked fine. Now at home I can’t connect to my router, and I get a message saying that the details held on the computer is not the same as the router. Also there is no “customise” function being shown on the network and sharing centre screen to switch back to private network. I’ve tried everything to set up a connection, even a new one, but the same message appears all the time.

However when I plug the same camera and firewire cable into an older computer with XP sp2, it works fine. This is very perplexing. I've seen others with the same problem though with different camcorders and no one seems to have an answer. Is there anyway to convince vista that my vid cam is out there? I have looked at the Sony site and they indicate that it will work without any additional drivers. This doesn't bode well for Vista if it can't make a simple firewire connection.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAll worked fine together then today the firewire devices were no longer recognized. External devices were connected to system with USB to check and devices worked fine. Also were connected to other systems via firewire and were ok. Onboard Texas Instruments 1394 controller driver in device manager says ok. But no firewire connections get made. Neither mobo onboard firewire nor optional firewire port has any effect.

When I do, I lose the maxtor drive (which holds the captured video) and have to unplug/replug the Maxtor to get the drive recognized. How can I keep both devices operational since I only need the firewire camera when I have video to capture?

View 5 Replies View RelatedCanon XL-2 camcorder is not recognized by Vista when plugging into the firewire port. Premiere CS3 does not see the device either. No issues with XP2 32bit... recognized and captured fine. Searching the net reveals firewire connectivity on Vista (in general) is problematic, if non-existent. Should have done my homework before building the box. 64 bit allows for access to more RAM and than means faster render times. Not being able to capture via firewire is a definite "show stopper". I had been happy with 64 bit up to this point (all bells and whistles turned off of course). Another "EPIC FAIL" for Microsoft.
