64-bit Does Not Recognize Firewire Devices.

Jan 22, 2009

All worked fine together then today the firewire devices were no longer recognized. External devices were connected to system with USB to check and devices worked fine. Also were connected to other systems via firewire and were ok. Onboard Texas Instruments 1394 controller driver in device manager says ok. But no firewire connections get made. Neither mobo onboard firewire nor optional firewire port has any effect.

1394 Firewire Dropped Devices

Jun 2, 2008

Vista Ultimate - 32 bit SP1 I have a Maxtor external firewire disk drive and it worked just fine until I installed my firewire camera to capture video. When I do, I lose the maxtor drive (which holds the captured video) and have to unplug/replug the Maxtor to get the drive recognized. How can I keep both devices operational since I only need the firewire camera when I have video to capture?

Firewire: Convince Vista That My Vid Cam Is Out There

Mar 23, 2008

I am trying to download video from my Sony TRV-310 handicam using firewire to my new Vista laptop. Vista does not see my camera. However when I plug the same camera and firewire cable into an older computer with XP sp2, it works fine. This is very perplexing. I've seen others with the same problem though with different camcorders and no one seems to have an answer. Is there anyway to convince vista that my vid cam is out there? I have looked at the Sony site and they indicate that it will work without any additional drivers. This doesn't bode well for Vista if it can't make a simple firewire connection.

64 Bit Not Recognizing Firewire Connection To Camcorder

Jan 18, 2009

Canon XL-2 camcorder is not recognized by Vista when plugging into the firewire port. Premiere CS3 does not see the device either. No issues with XP2 32bit... recognized and captured fine. Searching the net reveals firewire connectivity on Vista (in general) is problematic, if non-existent. Should have done my homework before building the box. 64 bit allows for access to more RAM and than means faster render times. Not being able to capture via firewire is a definite "show stopper". I had been happy with 64 bit up to this point (all bells and whistles turned off of course). Another "EPIC FAIL" for Microsoft.

64 Not Seeing USB Devices

Apr 18, 2009

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but I thought I'd post it anyway. I recently upgraded to Vista Home Premium 64. It's not an upgrade disk but a full version on a DVD with SP1 (so I upgraded in the sense that I'm not using XP anymore). There are a couple of annoying things that keep happening.

First, Vista isn't recognizing USB devices, specifically my Ipod, my thumb drive, and my external HDD. They don't even come up in Windows or Disk Management. It's like they're connected (my external HDD has the power led on, but no activity) but invisible. I can't figure out any way to force Windows to see them. Is there any way to do that? Is there a problem with my USB drivers?

The only surefire way to get my Ipod recognized is to attach it first, without opening any other programs, after a start-up or a re-start. If I start my computer and work on it for a while and decide to attach a USB device, Windows doesn't see it at all. Obviously, re-starting each time I want to plug in a plug-n-play device is unacceptable.

Can Use USB Devices In VM?

Mar 23, 2008

I have read in previous posts that the USB parts are not available in a VM. I am wanting to run XP in a VM on a Vista computer, but I have a USB keyboard and mouse. If I understand the previous posts, I will not be able to access these devices. Is this true? If so, is there a way to work around this (besides having two KB's and mice)? What I want to accomplish is to be able to utilize XP and Vista on the same machine. From what I have read in previous posts, it seems that a VM is a better solution than a dual boot. I am just looking for a way to run older apps on my Vista machine (Office Pro XP, Office Pro '97, and some old games from the as far back as the W98 days [and yes all software is legit]). So far I have been able to run all the W2K apps that I want, but I am just starting to move from W2K to Vista (Basic and Home Premium [two different computers]), and I foresee some problems in my future. BTW, I am able to run the old W98 apps/games on W2K by using the Compatibility tool.

No Mouse Or Other Devices

Apr 16, 2008

I am having a problem with Vista. Last time I shut my computer down, my mouse worked fine. Now it is gone. I normally use a regular Dell USB mouse. I tried a PS2 mouse that that isn't recognized at all. So, I plugged the USB mouse back in. The computer recognized that I plugged something but claimed it couldn't find a driver for it. I read that Windows Update KB938371 but I am unable to uninstall it and a system restore doesn't fix the problem.

As an additional note to this problem: for the past couple of days ANY USB or firewire drive that I plug in (even ones that I have used before) will not work. As with the mouse, the computer recognizes that I plugged something in but it can't find a driver for it. Anybody have a solution for this other than reinstalling Vista? Having no mouse and no connection to a external hard drive is quite an inconvenience. Even if I DID want to back my stuff up and reformat my computer, I don't dare do that because I have nothing to back it up on besides a bunch of DVD's.

Recognizing USB Devices

Feb 23, 2010

I've been experiencing this problem for approximately six months on and off. Intermitently, when I go to attach a USB device (memory stick or ipod) I get the pop up "USB Device Not Recognized." At this point, nothing I attach will be recognized

In the Device Manager whatever I attach is listed as an Unknown Device. I check the Properties and get the advice "No drivers are installed for this devices" I've tried right clicking and Updating the Driver Software but get the response: "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date". I check the Properties again and still get the advice "No drivers are installed for this devices".........................

Many Devices Disabled?

Apr 3, 2010

A friend of mine gave me a his HP notebook which recently developed a serious problem. It's an HP Pavilion DV6305 that uses an Nvida chipset and AMD cpu and runs Vista Home Basic. When he first bought it, I set it up for him with Eset's Nod32 anti-virus. The problem appears to be that at least 10 devices appear to be unable to load the associated device driver and in each case (looking in device manager) the error message appears to be: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)Googling on this error only turned up dozens of references to people having this problem with their CD / DVD drive but nothing like what is going on here.

Of course my first suspicion was a virus, since this seems to be the case with so many people having problems these days. I scanned with the installed Nod32 V4.0.x and it didn't find anything. Of course not that that completely rules out a virus. Next I tried running a disk test on the boot drive with both "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and the system log seems to indicate that the hard drive is clean with no problems.

The devices that are disabled include both the Ethernet and wireless controllers, the USB controllers, the HP quick Launch Buttons, the audio controller, etc. The only way to get files onto the machine is by burning them onto CD, since the CD / DVD drive is one of the few devices that appears to be working. I've tried downloading drivers for the Nvidia chipset and networking controllers, putting them on a cd and trying to reinstall them but while the installation appears to complete without errors on reboot the device still doesn't work properly. Does anyone have any ideas what I could do to fix this problem? If this is a virus, any ideas on how to remove it since the installed scanner can't detect it?

Hardware Failing-one Or More Devices?

Nov 8, 2008

Problem 1) one of my HDD's are failing. The noise it's been making ie clicking, whirring has been steadily getting worse. The problem here is that I can't tell which one of my three drives is the culprit.

Problem 2) Blank monitor. I first noticed this little doozy a couple of weeks ago when I removed a second monitor. Upon restart, the original monitor stayed in power save mode while the PC kept booting up as normal. That too has slowly become worse. It now requires me to kill the power and keep restarting until it turns on. It's not the monitor, because it works fine with other devices.

Problem 3) Freezing. This is where I'm a little stumped as to who the culprit is. Ocassionaly the PC just freezes, requiring a hard reset. Sometimes after a hard reset, that's when the monitor issue happens......

No Devices In The Program Manager

Nov 4, 2009

I have Vista Ultimate 64 (upgrade) and the system began performing slowly about a week ago. Seemed like it was having problems accessing the drives (RAID 1). I performed a Restore which seemed to help, but after awhile it slowed down again. After some checking around I found there were no devices listed in the Program Manager. I looked on the web and found something for XP where you check your Plug and Play in Services - mine has all the buttons greyed out (can't even pause it)

The odd thing is that you can boot up, log in (that takes awhile), and browse the web without any difficulties. It's just when you want to look inside a folder that it freezes, and after while, shows you the contents. At this point, I'm going to do a repair from the installation disk if there's no other solution available.

Also did a registry clean and repair. Tried renaming INFCACHE.1 to INFCACHE.1.bak. Tried the hotfix mentioned in a similar post. Ran a registry scan and repair.

Devices include memory stick, webcam, printer, wireless KB and mouse. USB ports have power, and Vista sees new hardware when its is plugged in, but always sees it as unknown device and cannot find or install drivers. All devices worked fine 2 days ago..........

Devices Not Working Properly 64 Bit?

Jun 4, 2008

I am interested in a Gateway C-142XL convertible tablet PC. I like the specs on this computer. I also like the idea of being able to use tablet mode, without going to a a 12" screen. It comes with Vista 32 bit. I am going to be running > models, so I want to take advantage of the 64 bit system. My understanding is I can get Vista 64 bit compile for a nominal fee. However, I am concerned that I will not be able to get all of the devices to work properly. Are drivers for new computer hardware generally available?Anyone tried this machine with 64 bit? I am having a hard time finding out what drivers are needed for this machine to check for 64 bit compiles. Processor and memory should be fine. I found a driver for the video card. Any advice on what else to check out? Any advice on going to 64 bit on new machines (or tablets set up with 32 bit operating system in general)?

Windows 7: Devices And Newsgroups

May 13, 2009

Is anyone ever going to create newsgroups like Microsoft.Public.Windows.7.xxx? And, a comment: I installed the Windows 7 Release Candidate on an old SIS-741-based motherboard with an AMD Athlon XP processor. It works great. The drivers for the SIS-964 built-in Ethernet were never built for Vista, but amazingly, the XP drivers worked fine for this device. The driver file that Windows 7 is using is called SISNICXP.SYS. I also pointed Windows 7 to the folder with the "i386" drivers for the Promise SATA-300 TX4 add-in card (ulsata2.inf), and it happily installed the SYS files, and the attached SATA disks work fine.

Windows 7 found the AC '97 audio drivers on Windows Update. I meant to disable the audio on this computer since I'm not going to use it, but I forgot. (My computers that do audio, have much better audio add-in cards than a built-in AC '97 chip!)I'm encrypting two of the 500 GB SATA disks with BitLocker now. It is a very slow process, but I'll only have to do it once.I'm happily amazed that the "i386" drivers for the SATA controller, and the SIS-964 Ethernet drivers from Windows XP, worked in Windows 7.
