I have taken a full backup of my C drive with "Windows Vista Backup and Restore". Now I discovered that all my mail in the "Sent" folder are missing. What file(s) do I have to restore to get my mail back?
View 7 RepliesIn 2006 I purchased a computer from DELL that came with a free upgrade to Vista. Now I just purchased a larger drive and am trying to do a restore. I need to restore the system with XP Pro. first and when I try to put the Vista upgrade on it asks for the COA which I cannot find. I still have the old drive and it works fine. There must be a way to get the COA from the Vista operating system from that drive. Does anyone know where to get it? Dell has now information on this.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Ultimate on a clean-install computer with new hard disks. I can set a Restore point but it disappears after the next boot; and Vista never automatically makes Restore points - there are never any there until I manually make one, then it disappears after the next boot.
This is not a dual boot computer; Vista was not an upgrade; Restore Points are not turned off; I'm not running any Norton software; I have over 200GB free on my HD; I have read all of Bert Kinney's articles. I am, however, running Diskeeper but when I questioned Diskeeper they said that it was quite definitely NOT Diskeeper that was the problem. But they would, wouldn't they?
Went to do a system restore from a few days ago and found a them all missing except from today. I haven't run the cleanup tool to delete them, I have plenty of disk space, 320G x 2( C drive and a D drive). My system protection settings seem to be fine. I managed to get what I needed, but am concerned that I am not getting restore points as I should. My understanding is that the allocated space will be used, then the oldest will roll off and a new one created.

In reading about this issue I find mention of some box to click to show restore points older than five days. I'm running Vista Business and do not see that selection. I have verified and set 20 gig of 160 gig HD for restore point storage. How do I see or get restore points older than a few days?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't even have system restore on my computer! I have tried everything that I've read about on the internet. I did the search, I did the windows+R and typed in rstrui.exe but it says that the program doesn't exist. I'm not extremely knowledgeable about computers but have managed to fix nearly all problems I've had with computers in the past on my own but this is killing me. I ran some stupid Registry First Aid program on the computer and suddenly, a bunch of things on my computer are going wrong.
I cannot access the internet, the computer won't even show that there is a network to connect to, but when I booted my older computer with the same modem and everything, it worked perfectly (that's the one I'm actually using now to post this!) A bunch of applications/programs aren't running properly anymore, even those little side links on the control panel window aren't working (I keep getting popups that say the file/program doesn't exist). It seems a lot of things are not existing on my computer!
In Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 section "Restoring Files and Folders with Previous Versions" it states, "To see what previous versions are available for a file or folder, right-click the item in Windows Explorer and choose Restore Previous Versions." When I right-click a file or folder (with frequent changes over time) in Windows Explorer, I can't find anything labelled "Restore Previous Versions".
I have "Show hidden files and folders" checked and "Hide protected operating system files" unchecked in Folder Options, and I opened Windows Explorer using "Run as Administrator". How do I get to see the "Restore Previous Versions" menu item?
A friend who has Vista (I have XP) says that when she right-clicks, "New" --> "Folder" is not an option that comes up on the resulting menu choices.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I used XP I kept the My Documents file on my D: drive. Apart from anything else this made backing-up a cinch. After upgrading to Vista, I played around and managed to get the D: drive to appear on my start menu. It also appears under my Username folder on the start menu. However, it is grey rather than green and in both places is is called DATA (D rather than documents (or possibly Documents).
My Music and Pictures folders are stored as sub-folders in this drive/folder in the right place, but the other default folders such as Links, Saved Games, Searches, Downloads and Favourites are not, for some reason they still sit on the C: drive. My Videos folder is on my E: drive where I would like to keep it.
Ideally I'd like all these folders to sit on D: with a green Documents folder and all the sub-folders (except Videos). I've seen plenty of online tips about moving folders, sometimes they involve tinkering with the registry, but not much about fixing wrongly configured folders. This isn't just petty nonsense, I really need everything in one place so I can organise simple and reliable back-ups

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have tried everything to display file size in the Windows Explorer folders. I am using Vista version 6 SP1.
My folder is set to view 'all items'. It shows me name, date modified and type. When I right click to display column options, I can't locate size. There are a bunch of other column options, but size is not among them.
I am mising the icon "Make New Folder" in Vista's Explorer. I know there are other possibilities creating a new folder (e.g. Organize, Make New Folder button). how to add the icon "make new folder" to the Explorer.
My APP folder under my user folder and the Program Data folder on Local C: Computer, both just disappeared. They are missing and not showing. My folder options check marks are where they should be. I tried Brink's solution in the registry and my missing folders as well as folders that are showing all look the same as far as data and pathes and stuff.
In other words, the missing ones look the same as the ones that are showing, so what is there to change? They all show %userprofile% in front of them. I don't know what made these two important folders disappear. I just don't know how to get them back. I have Vista 32 bit.
I accidentally deleted couple folders in my "personal folder"... can't find them in Recycle Bin... so how do i get those special folders under Personal Folder back?!

Recently I moved two pieces of mail from my Inbox to a folder. There were 5 other pieces of mail in that folder and the count was 5. After moving the mail though the count went up to 7 but the mail did not appear in the folder. Is there any tool or any option or any edit in a folder and/or the Registry purhaps where I can straighten this out. It isn't imperative I recover the email but at a minimum I would like to fix the email count in the folder to be accurate once again. This is Windows Mail in Vista Ultimate 64-bit with all the Microsoft Updates.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI use Vista Home Basic and out of nowhere I realised there was a 'Desktop' folder in the Favorites tab on IE. Since I have no need to have all my desktop shortcuts messing up the arrangement of my fave webpages so I went ahead and deleted it. Warning bells should have gone off in me head when File Operations was asking for permission but I persisted. And now all the files that I have kept on my desktop are gone i.e. pics, pdf, resumes!! I have checked the Recycle Bin but they are not there either. I tried using a software that downloaded online -> WinUndelete but it made me more confused.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am moving a lot of my games out of the Program Files folder into C:Games so that UAC doesn't ask permission to play most of my games anymore. The problem is that, after I move the game folder, even though the game plays perfectly, it disappears from the Game Explorer and I can't seem to get it added back. The specific game i'm trying with is Lord of the Rings Online. (I moved World of Warcraft and it fixed itself instantly). Everquest 1 also disappeared and no matter what I do I can't seem to get it back in the game explorer other than dragging in the exectuable. Is there a way to get the official Game Explorer icon back for Lord of the Rings Online with the full game rating and ESRB rating and all after moving the folder?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using Vista Home Premium x64. I was attempting to back up some external drives to each other. I had previously used Robocopy on Windows XP with much success, so I thought I would do the same. I initially just manually copied and pasted an external drive designated "G:" into a folder within another external drive designated "I:" (so for example I:Backup1). The files were present and looked all good after this.
Today, I ran Robocopy to try to mirror those two, however as soon as I finished, the "Backup1" folder disappeared from "I:". The files however are present, as I can tell from the space used on "I:" and on top of that, when I try to make a new folder with the same name ("Backup1"), it won't let me, saying that a folder by that name is already present. Other folders (that do not have any data yet) are still present within "I:" The Robocopy script is basically Robocopy "G:" "I:Backup1" /MIR /XA:SH /XD AppData /XJD /R:2 /W:2 /V /ETA /Z /LOG:Backuplog.txt

this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
For some reason the Documents folder has reverted to having a plain icon and has lost the special green documents icon. How can I restore its icon to its former glory? Other special folders are unaffected.

In the program files, Activision, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. Directly after the install I downloaded Patch 1.6 and 1.6-1.7 After that I went to the Call of Duty Modern Warfare folder so that I could add my custom maps. But the folders I am looking for are missing. The folders located in my CoD4 MW folder are: Docs, Main, Miles, Mods, pb, Zone. Then there are 2 folders missing: players and usermaps. My game runs fine, but I cant do anything more... I have all my ranks, but I cant find my players folder. I did a search throughout my pc, for the names of those folders but couldnt find anything... I reinstalled CoD4 twice...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI haven't used Windows mail (only used to read news groups) in some time, when I went to use it this morning I received this error message; Folder could not be opened Windows mail could not open this folder. The possible causes are not the problem. I have 2 gig memory and it was working fine when I only had 1 gig of memory. Disk space, I have over 90 gig of free space.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIn my previous email program of choice, Outlook Express, I used to beable to select the "to" function within the email message template and see a display of contacts that included the FOLDERS. In Windows Mail, the same action calls up ALL the contacts and NO folders. ALthough I can select multiple contacts from the Windows Contacts folder and through "action", install them in the "To" pane of an email message, I cannot jump from folder to folder to, for example, select contacts within another folder whom I wish to CC on the same message. The "Action" sequence always generates a new email template, posting any selected contact or contacts to the "To" pane.
I do not wish to create GROUPS and then go through the convoluted process of calling up the group in the "To" pane, and then deleting the ones I don't want. Needless to say, this feature was critical to my email flow and organization. Am I missing something? I have checked every forum and group I can. Others report the same issue without resolution. One forum individual said, "That's the way Windows Mail is".
Suddenly, WinMail won't save an e-mail in the Sent folder nor save in the Draft folder. Yes, In Options, Save a letter in the Sent folder is selected. Nothing changed, just suddenly stopped saving anything. Is there a way to uninstall Win Mail and reinstall? This program is a constant screw-up.

View 5 Replies View Relatedmy dodgy mail issue is back. Any HTML emails sent to me from Outlook appear as plain text and attachments are missing. I know for a fact that the gateway server they go through does NOT turn them into RTF or anything... It was all working fine and then it stopped. I am beginning to assume it's a problem intermittently caused by Norton AV (360 v3.0 I'm running). I have disabled email scanning but no dice.
