I know this is easy to do, but for some odd reason I can't get this to work. I followed about 5 different steps, that I found on Google. Help me restore "RUN" command and "HELP" commands, please? I restored "Search" command. If possible just add it to this list, not replace anything in my list. Then, I also need to reanble "Hibirnate" option.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIn 2006 I purchased a computer from DELL that came with a free upgrade to Vista. Now I just purchased a larger drive and am trying to do a restore. I need to restore the system with XP Pro. first and when I try to put the Vista upgrade on it asks for the COA which I cannot find. I still have the old drive and it works fine. There must be a way to get the COA from the Vista operating system from that drive. Does anyone know where to get it? Dell has now information on this.

I can set a Restore point but it disappears after the next boot; and Vista never automatically makes Restore points - there are never any there until I manually make one, then it disappears after the next boot.
This is not a dual boot computer; Vista was not an upgrade; Restore Points are not turned off; I'm not running any Norton software; I have over 200GB free on my HD; I have read all of Bert Kinney's articles. I am, however, running Diskeeper but when I questioned Diskeeper they said that it was quite definitely NOT Diskeeper that was the problem. But they would, wouldn't they?
Went to do a system restore from a few days ago and found a them all missing except from today. I haven't run the cleanup tool to delete them, I have plenty of disk space, 320G x 2( C drive and a D drive). My system protection settings seem to be fine. I managed to get what I needed, but am concerned that I am not getting restore points as I should. My understanding is that the allocated space will be used, then the oldest will roll off and a new one created.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't even have system restore on my computer! I have tried everything that I've read about on the internet. I did the search, I did the windows+R and typed in rstrui.exe but it says that the program doesn't exist. I'm not extremely knowledgeable about computers but have managed to fix nearly all problems I've had with computers in the past on my own but this is killing me. I ran some stupid Registry First Aid program on the computer and suddenly, a bunch of things on my computer are going wrong.
I cannot access the internet, the computer won't even show that there is a network to connect to, but when I booted my older computer with the same modem and everything, it worked perfectly (that's the one I'm actually using now to post this!) A bunch of applications/programs aren't running properly anymore, even those little side links on the control panel window aren't working (I keep getting popups that say the file/program doesn't exist). It seems a lot of things are not existing on my computer!
In Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 section "Restoring Files and Folders with Previous Versions" it states, "To see what previous versions are available for a file or folder, right-click the item in Windows Explorer and choose Restore Previous Versions." When I right-click a file or folder (with frequent changes over time) in Windows Explorer, I can't find anything labelled "Restore Previous Versions".
I have "Show hidden files and folders" checked and "Hide protected operating system files" unchecked in Folder Options, and I opened Windows Explorer using "Run as Administrator". How do I get to see the "Restore Previous Versions" menu item?
I am writing to this Forum in desperation because I cannot find any way to get in touch by email with Windows Live OneCare even though I am a paid subscriber. After 18 months of endless problems with Windows VISTA Ultimate Edition V 6001 I now wish to reformat my computer and get RID of it altogether, replacing it with System 7 for which I have a serial number and a beta download from the recent Microsoft online download offer.
As VISTA seems to have eleminated DOS altogether and the old FDisk command doesn't work from a command line start, I have tried to reformat from my OEM Vista Ultimate Edition re-installation DVD which I am certain used to offer me reformat and partitioin delete as the first options but that no longer seems to offer me any reformat option at all and not only instists only on re-installing VISTA (which I no longer want) but leaves the old installation in a directory renamed "WindowsOld" which VISTA will then not allow me to delete....

I need this to happen all from one command line. A command prompt needs to open with "echo hi" being ran as a command line.
I'm having trouble with the REN command with wild cards as used from the command prompt. For example, in the REN command help, it says: "For example, if you had files that are named smitha.doc, smithb.doc, and smithc.doc, you could use the ren smith*.doc smythe*.doc command. All file names automatically show the new spelling, and are renamed smythea.doc, smytheb.doc, and smythec.doc.".........

When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. After installing SP2, on 5/25, System Restore seems to have stopped creating automatic restore points every 24 hours. I checked the Task Manger and it is set for 24 hours. It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. As it is restoring Norton sees the virus and removes it from my system but Norton can not see the virus inside the restore files. Right now my system is fine (virus wise) but I need to restore from an earlier restore point because I deleted some files and now my cd/dvd drive is not recognized. But like I said, I can not restore do to the fact that I have a virus buried inside my restore files. View 7 Replies View RelatedThe mystery, at least to me, my PC was running almost 2 years. and it was not until about 3 weeks ago that System Restore began to save Restore Points the size of Approx 3 to 4GB daily. Prior to that the Restore Points were well under 1GB. it would be 3 to 6 days before I noticed the loss of 1GB. So why suddenly would the Restore File grew 1 one day from well under 1GB to between 3 to 4GB? That now is the issue I would like to know the answer to. and perhaps that file being saved with each Restore Point is not needed. I mean it wasn't needed for almost 2 years. so I can't think over night it became important but it sure is eating up HDD space.
