Programming Keyboard Keys: 'browse' To The Command Vista Uses To Shutdown
Mar 30, 2010
I just got my hands on a MS 3000 wireless keyboard. This thing is nice. Anyway you can program/reset just about all the keys. My wired keyboard had a power button, this one has no power button...you know that you can shutdown windows with a push of a button. Well, since I can reassign keys I need to 'browse' to the command vista uses to shutdown. Any one know it ?

I'm using a Logitech MX 5500 Revolution keyboard and mouse combo. As you may or may not know, the keyboard has special vista shortcut keys, such media center, 3d flip, gadgets, photo gallery etc. Anyways, I've noticed that these shortcut keys don't work, until I open up the logitech software that configures and calibrates all the buttons on the hardware. So pretty much once I've opened up the program these keys work, but on startup and before I open up the software they dont. I've installed the drivers and I've checked my msconfig to see wether or not the service is switched off on startup, and it is on.

I have the vista premium 64bit (only 2 days old) and the keyboard keys
have gone mental.
They replace shortcuts and after a reboot the non-working/"bad" keys change so its a different set of letters.
Sometimes F will open find computer while other times it wont, and sometimes L will lock the pc while other times it wont.
Ive unistalled, reinstalled, updated the drivers.Restored the system to two days ago.
Check all language settings.

I type about 40 words per minute, but when typing on my home computer it does not enter all the keys that I hit. It is no particular key but more like there is a micro-second stall in the computer somehow that prevent the keyboard stroke from being recognized. I notice it most while using internet explorer probably because that is what I use most, but have had it happen while using other programs. After typing a page or so, I look to the screen to find a dozen or so misspelled words due to this problem. I have Windows Vista as the operating system.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A300 VO1 on which some keys are displaying the wrong symbol. Several of these keys are connected to the symbols above the numbers on the keyboard that require the shift button to be pressed i.e.. Shift + 2 should result in @ (ampersand) but I get the ? symbol ! what I can do to correct this? The computer is nearly new. It is running Vista Home Premium.

i don't know whether this is a hardware or software problem, either way
1. some of my keyboard keys produce the wrong symbols! if i press:
*shift+numeric key 2, i get quotation mark (") -- i should get this "@"symbol, right?
*shift+single quotation mark('),i get the commercial at(@)instead of the(")quotation mark.
*shift+numeric key 3, i get the pound sign(?)instead of the number sign ()
*shift+(`) i don't know the name of the symbol but the key is located above the(tab)key, i get this symbol"?"--instead of the tilde sign"~"(well, i think that's what it's said in microsoft word's insert symbol)
note: the keyboard confusion only effects the "number 2", "number 3", '(single quotation) key, and the tilde (~) key; BUT only when they are combine with SHIFT key.
2. keyboard shortcuts are not functioning, but this second problem happens ONLY on windows explorer. (it does not effect microsoft word, notepad, or internet explorer):
*ctrl+a -- so i can't select all files in the folder/window explorer.
*ctrl+t -- so i can't cut files to put them somewhere else.
*ctrl -- so i can't pick multiple files, randomly.
this second problem is very troublesome cause i cant move or copy multiple file!

I was wondering if it was possible to create shortcuts so that I could use my keyboard to toggle between power configs on my laptop. For instance, using my FUNC + F11 to go from POWER SAVER to MAX PERFORMANCE, etc.

Our company has a 16bit command line application that works fine under XP and was working fine under Vista until, we believe, service pack 1 was installed. The program works initially to accept keyboard input but seems to ignore any keyboard input after a few minutes of the PC being left with no activity. We have tested this on Windows Vista and Windows 7 and have exactly the same issue. We have created a very basic program that would allow you to type characters and exit when Enter is pressed. I have narrowed the time delay before the program freezes down to about 4 minutes of inactivity. This will cause the program to not respond to any key presses on the keyboard and has to be closed by clicking on the x in the top right corner.
I am wondering if anyone else is having this issue and also if there is a fix for this? (Perhaps a registry key timeout setting?) Below is a copy of the source code we used for our simple program. The program is written in Microsoft C version 5. We are using an Int 16h Function 00h BIOS call to read the keyboard character.

I've recently added an additional computer to my home network and have installed Windows 7 on it so that my network now consists of computers running either XP, Vista or Windows 7. My problem is that although the Vista box appears in the Network entries on both the XP and Windows 7 boxes I can't browse the Vista box. The error message "Windows cannot access \ComputerName" and then indicates that I don't have permission to access the Vista computer. However I'm able to map a network drive on the XP box & the Windows 7 box to any of the shares on the Vista box. The XP boxes can browse the Windows 7 box and vice-versa. The Vista box can browse both the XP box and the Windows 7 box. I've searched for a solution on the web and tried almost all the ones that I've found but can't solve this

Just to give you guys an idea of what I am trying to do. I want to make some simple programs using Command Prompt in Windows Vista. No, this is not a problem I am having with the OS. What I am trying to do, is to write a simple program that allows me to run IPCONFIG test for whatever computer this program is on. However, I need to know if there is a way to capture the IP address of the computer. So that it can be retrieved by the program and used to ping the local machine of the system?

I have a computer I bought factory refurbished from a popular on-line retailer. I have a sticker on the side of the case with the product key on it. It is the official sticker with 5 groups of 5 letters and numbers. However, I ran SIW to check the numbers and they are different! What if I ever need this key? I guess the one SIW gives me is right but I don't know how to proceed. Have you heard of this? Is the one inside Windows from SIW correct? Here's what Brink posted on his tutorial. I followed these directions to check product key. It's not the product ID in control panel>system....that would be my first thought. Product Key Number I also ran this one and got the same thing as SIW gave me.

Why does Vista take so long to shutdown? I've got a brand new Dell Inspiron 530, quad-core box with 4GB ram, so I'm pretty sure it's not the hardware. I did a clean install of Vista too. When I click restart it literally is on the "shutting down" screen for 2 minutes. That's not an exaggeration at all - I clocked it several times. Is there something I can do to speed it up?

I have read elsewhere of some users experiencing the problem of hard disks making the infamous clicking noises on shutdown of any version of vista. I don't know if its only SATA HD but thats what I have and I am experiencing the same thing. It has me concerned that the clicking of the HD arms might be unnecessary wear and tear. any fixes for this?

last night before bed I clicked shutdown and install updates in Vista. I woke up this morning and my computer will not turn on. It leads me to this: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next"
3. Click "repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assisance.

problem I have is that I do not have vista installation dvd. I am currently studying abroad in Rome and will take more time than I have to receive the dvd in the mail. None of my friends here have one either, but they all have the same make and model computer that I do. Is it possible for one of them create a installation dvd that I could use? Or could they make a recovery disc that could as least get me to the system recovery options screen?

For some reason, the laptop I just bought (Gateway FX P-7805u) will not remain shutdown if the Ethernet cable is still plugged in, and will turn itself back on. Sometimes it's immediately after shutdown, sometimes it's a few minutes later. I am actually pressing shutdown (not the "low power" option button, that looks very similar to the shutdown icon, located next to the Lock button in the Start Menu).

I am writing to this Forum in desperation because I cannot find any way to get in touch by email with Windows Live OneCare even though I am a paid subscriber. I have NOT had a good experience of MS tech support. After 18 months of endless problems with Windows VISTA Ultimate Edition V 6001 I now wish to reformat my computer and get RID of it altogether, replacing it with System 7 for which I have a serial number and a beta download from the recent Microsoft online download offer.
As VISTA seems to have eleminated DOS altogether and the old FDisk command doesn't work from a command line start, I have tried to reformat from my OEM Vista Ultimate Edition re-installation DVD which I am certain used to offer me reformat and partitioin delete as the first options but that no longer seems to offer me any reformat option at all and not only instists only on re-installing VISTA (which I no longer want) but leaves the old installation in a directory renamed "WindowsOld" which VISTA will then not allow me to delete....

As of yesterday, my PS/2 keyboard will not work when I boot up Vista. What is odd is that it *will* still work in the bios and on the prompt asking whether to boot in safe mode. The keyboard is just a generic PS/2 keyboard. I also tried plugging in another keyboard, to no avail. Lastly, I do not own a USB keyboard of any sort.

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Hundreds of years ago, UNIX had a command (and maybe still does) that allowed you to check which version of a command was being invoked on the command line. For example, assume you have several Java versions on your machine. The command: whence java would give you the complete path for the specific "java.exe" that would be used if you typed, for example:

For example, in the REN command help, it says: "For example, if you had files that are named smitha.doc, smithb.doc, and smithc.doc, you could use the ren smith*.doc smythe*.doc command. All file names automatically show the new spelling, and are renamed smythea.doc, smytheb.doc, and smythec.doc.".........
