View 7 RepliesHave a HP dv5-z pavillion and I have a problem. 1st when I hooked up my external monitor to the laptop got "Atikmag driver has stopped responding but has recovered" a lot and then the computer would do a crash dump and restart. This Happened every once in a while only when monitor connected. BUT now I have different problem, I get sent to System Recovery Opitions and vista will not start up. I have attached the error readings.

I have NOT had a good experience of MS tech support. After 18 months of endless problems with Windows VISTA Ultimate Edition V 6001 I now wish to reformat my computer and get RID of it altogether, replacing it with System 7 for which I have a serial number and a beta download from the recent Microsoft online download offer.
As VISTA seems to have eleminated DOS altogether and the old FDisk command doesn't work from a command line start, I have tried to reformat from my OEM Vista Ultimate Edition re-installation DVD which I am certain used to offer me reformat and partitioin delete as the first options but that no longer seems to offer me any reformat option at all and not only instists only on re-installing VISTA (which I no longer want) but leaves the old installation in a directory renamed "WindowsOld" which VISTA will then not allow me to delete....

My wired keyboard had a power button, this one has no power button...you know that you can shutdown windows with a push of a button. View 9 Replies View Relatedthe thread title says it all: I'm looking for a lightweight bootable command prompt which supports ntfs drives and supports x64 command line tools. Something like Freedos x64 or command.com x64 (if they existed which unfortunately they don't).
So far, all I can do is to boot into Windows' own command shell, but this is far from being lightweight. Every Linux supports booting into a pure command line mode, so there must be something similar for Windows with x64 support. Basically, the recovery console would suffice if it allowed using external command line tools, but afaik this is not the case.

I just ran the vista advisor from Microsoft and it said my 160 GB FAT 32 Hard drive was acceptable. I was under the impression that Vista required NTFS. I don't like the convert command because it loses some performance and has other issues. I can format and partition another 160 GB Hard Drive to NTFS and then use Acronis to copy partions (it will copy the files from an image without copying the FAT 32 format). The only problem is that it will take more than four hours. Does anyone know of a quicker method?

I have Power Point 2000 installed (yes, I know, old version, but this my fathers machine and he is not wanting to buy the latest version if this continues to work, which I can understand). Anyway, the default file associations are properly set, and when the file is saved into the documents directory, you can click on the file and it will open properly. This problem is only happening in Windows Mail. Is there a simple fix to this?

In the June 2007 issue of Microsoft's TechNet magazine Michael Murgolo has a great article about how to elevate commands in scripting using a free PowerToy called elevate.
Elevate allows you to elevate the permissions of a script or exe automatically instead of having to right click on a file and selecting Run as Administrator. Instead, you can just run "elevate my_script_that_needs_admin_rights.cmd" at command prompt or in a vb script.

For power users Command Prompt is where you go to get work done quickly and efficiently. If you spend a lot of time using Command Prompt, why not customize the appearance and operation to your preferences? There are actually a few Command Prompt customizations that will make it more useful and good looking.
Just follow these steps to customize your Command Prompt:
Click on the Start Button and key in Command Prompt and hit Enter.
Once Command Prompt has started, right click on the top left icon in the menu bar and select Defaults. Alternatively you can select Properties if you want to have different settings for different Command Prompt shortcuts.
You will now see the four tabs of options to customize. The sections that I always work with are Font, Layout and Colors. To get started, click on the Font tab. Here you will be able to change the font and size used. If you would like a micro prompt as shown below, select Raster Fonts and size 4x6.
On the Layout tab you can specify the size and location of the window as well as the buffer. I usually only change the Screen Buffer Height setting. This controls how many previous command lines are saved and can be scrolled back up through. Increasing this value is useful if you are looking at a large directory with more than 300 files. I always increase the Height value to the max which is 9999.
The Color tab is where you get to have the most fun changing the look of your Command Prompt. Just select what you want to change the color for and then change the color.
Back on the Options tab I recommend turning on Quick Edit Mode. This allows you to easily highlight text without having to go to Edit -> Mark and copy it by just right clicking. Then you can paste it by simply right clicking once more....
