Vista 32bits Unix Command That Allowed

Jul 19, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Hundreds of years ago, UNIX had a command (and maybe still does) that allowed you to check which version of a command was being invoked on the command line. For example, assume you have several Java versions on your machine. The command: whence java would give you the complete path for the specific "java.exe" that would be used if you typed, for example:

Use A UNIX Like OS (Linux/FreeBSD/OpenBSSD Etc...) Alongside My Vista Box

Jul 31, 2008

I need to use a UNIX like OS (Linux/FreeBSD/OpenBSSD etc...) alongside my vista box. I have decided against a dual boot scenario, because I need both accessable at same time, which leads me to useing either MS Virtual PC 2007 or VM Ware. As for the Guest OS, probably going to go with Linux, not sure wich distro yet, but inside there all pretty much same and I dont need a pretty gui, so I am not terribly worried about graphics card emulation. My host system is a Vista Ultimate64 laptop, 4gig mem, 360gb disk drives @ 7200rpm (X2), and Intel Core 2 duo @ 2.8ghz so I dont see a issue with that.

What I need some advice is this, Virtual PC 2007 or VMware workstation, I know VMware is $180ish, thats not a issue, what I am looking for is the best solution. Anyone here have experiance with one or both and have some opinions, speed comparisone etc? FYI I will be doing bridged networking so the guest OS can get its own IP and not rely on NAT from the host.

MS Acknowleges Unix Competition In SEC Filing

Aug 6, 2009

"Client faces strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market. Competing commercial software products, including variants of Unix, are supplied by competitors such as Apple, Canonical, and Red Hat. Apple takes an integrated approach to the PC experience and has made inroads in share, particularly in the U.S. and in the consumer segment. The Linux operating system, which is also derived from Unix and is available without payment under
a General Public License, has gained some acceptance, especially in emerging markets, as competitive pressures lead OEMs to reduce costs and new, lower-price PC form-factors gain adoption. Partners such as Hewlett-Packard and Intel have been actively working with alternative Linux-based operating systems."

Windows Equivalent Of Unix Spool Directory

Aug 2, 2009

Under Unix a logged in user can print to a printer with the lpr command. What happens is that the print job goes to a special directory on the Unix operating system's filesystem such directory known as a spool directory. From the spool directory the job goes into the printer's memory from which it is printed. When a printer is turned off its RAM is cleared so that it does looses knowledge of such jobs when it is turned on. However, under Unix whatever was in the spool directory remains there and if you power off the computer and then back on it keeps sending it to the printer. Now, I don't know what the equivalent of a spool directory under Unix is called under Windows, but I would like to clear it by cancelling all print jobs from the user I am logged into. So how do I cancel print jobs under Windows Vista Home Premium SP1? This would save me lots of wasted ink and paper,

FDisk Command Doesn't Work From A Command Line Start

Mar 12, 2009

I am writing to this Forum in desperation because I cannot find any way to get in touch by email with Windows Live OneCare even though I am a paid subscriber. I have NOT had a good experience of MS tech support. After 18 months of endless problems with Windows VISTA Ultimate Edition V 6001 I now wish to reformat my computer and get RID of it altogether, replacing it with System 7 for which I have a serial number and a beta download from the recent Microsoft online download offer.

As VISTA seems to have eleminated DOS altogether and the old FDisk command doesn't work from a command line start, I have tried to reformat from my OEM Vista Ultimate Edition re-installation DVD which I am certain used to offer me reformat and partitioin delete as the first options but that no longer seems to offer me any reformat option at all and not only instists only on re-installing VISTA (which I no longer want) but leaves the old installation in a directory renamed "WindowsOld" which VISTA will then not allow me to delete....

Well, since I can reassign keys I need to 'browse' to the command vista uses to shutdown. Any one know it ?

I have just started having problems sending emails, I am receiving my emails with no problems. I have even added the windows mail to be allowed through the firewall. I don't know if there was a windows update that has caused the problem since I have not had problems like this before. A window pops up stating....your server has unexpectedly terminated the connections. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or longer periods of inactivity. Error number 0x800CCCoF. My internet provides say there is no problem on their end and that it must be a firewall problem.

Looking For Bootable Command Prompt

Feb 13, 2010

the thread title says it all: I'm looking for a lightweight bootable command prompt which supports ntfs drives and supports x64 command line tools. Something like Freedos x64 or command.com x64 (if they existed which unfortunately they don't).

So far, all I can do is to boot into Windows' own command shell, but this is far from being lightweight. Every Linux supports booting into a pure command line mode, so there must be something similar for Windows with x64 support. Basically, the recovery console would suffice if it allowed using external command line tools, but afaik this is not the case.
