Post-Virus Loss Of Disc Space In

Nov 30, 2007

I am having a problem with losing disc space. I recently caught and presumably deleted a Trojan, Zlob-X.a. My computer was fine for about 48 hours after the removal. Now every time I connect to the internet I lose GB of hard disc space (about 1 GB every 5-10 minutes). The loss or continues for several minutes after I disconnect, as if something has downloaded and is expanding in the background. No spyware removal tool or antivirus has detected anything.

Low Disc Space?

Jan 25, 2010

When i bought the laptop the there were 3 partitions, due to the two seperate hard drives, i used Drive C:/ for all of my programs and just school files. Drive D:/ is for music and movies, and E:/ are the standard HP recovery discs that come on the Hard drive. Yesterday when i turned on my computer i got a message telling me i had low disk space on drive D:/. But i don't have that much on it. The day before i still had 160gb free on that drive. It has just all a sudden become filled.

I have run symantec antivirus, windows defender, ad-aware, and ccleaner to try to fix the problem. I have also defragged the drive, and gone in and manually looked at all of the hidden and system protected files. I see no reason that the frive should be full, because all the most i have on that drive is 60gb.

Running Out Of Disc Space

Sep 7, 2009

I just had a new hard drive installed. I am using OS vista Home Premium SP2 64 bit. I am now getting this message "Low Disk Space You are running out of disk space on RECOVERY . To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here.. "When I "Click here," I am then offered "Disk Cleanup for RECOVERY (D." The Disk Cleanup offers "Office Setup Files" and "Recycle Bin," but both have "0 bytes" so I can't free up space that way.

when I go to my the only folder listed on the is the Recovery and when I click on it it has the HP Invent screen that says: Recovery Partition WARNING!!!! This area of your hard drive(or partition) contains files used for your PC Recovery Do not Delete or alter these files Any changes to this partition could prevent any recovery later. There are no files listed that I can see, so don't know what is actually on there, and I want to back this up to my external hard drive.

Low Disc Space Drive C:

Sep 11, 2007

I have had this Pavillion dv6305tx laptop just 2 months and after a short while the disc almost full message popped up, it is a 160gb HDD with vista ultimate 64 bit os. Strange because I had not installed any new programs. I phoned the HP line (India) and was told to re format the HDD. This I did but now I have the same message again. I have not istalled anything and the add/remove programs tells me I have less than 2gb of programs installed. The HDD seems to be filling up in its own and I cannot work it out. I think it is a setting in vista but don't know wher to start. The problem is not with the recovery partition D.

Just Randomly Gained 2GB Disc Space...

Jul 14, 2009

I turned my computer on today and nothing out of the ordinary happened, but I noticed my disc space went from its previous 168GB to 170GB. I assume it's just because it cleared 2GB of uneccecary files. I doubt it's a problem, though, just wanted to ask you guys to make sure.

Also, is it enough to run weekly scans on all my drives with McAfee VirusScan and Windows Defender, or does it have the potential miss things?

Running Low Disc Space On Driver F

Jun 8, 2008

I recently was told by my computer I needed to backup my files. First I tried moving them to disc drive F but then it said that I had no more room. I tried compressing the files on F but it didn't work. So I put my backup on dvds. My question, is how do I get that stuff off of drive F, I keep getting a baloon that says "You are running low on disc space on drive F" and it's annoying. Plus I don't need that backup stuff on F anymore. What do I do to empty it out, as it was before?

Hard Disc: How Much Space Re-gain By Using Compress Drive Tool ?

Mar 23, 2008

I have Vista Home Premium running on a PC with a 40GB C drive primary hard disc. My programs are on this C drive, all my docs etc are stored on either of separate D drive and H drives. My primary drive is running at about 30GB used/10GB free space. I continually clean out my C drive of temp files etc, clear my cache but how much space would I re-gain by using the Compress Drive tool (visible when I look at C drive properties)?

Losing Memory At An Alarming Rate And Now The Remaining C Disc Space Is At 257kb

Sep 16, 2009

The PC has been losing memory at an alarming rate and now the remaining C disc space is at 257kb. We both regularly clear Temp Internet Files, and now only have programs installed that we use. There are only myself and my boy who use this PC, the other 3 kids have another to use, and between us we only have aroung 6 gigs worth of stuff on it, photo's and music mainly. We even took it back to the original factory settings earlier in the year due to this problem, but it started happening again almost straight away. I have AVG installed for anti-virus and Comodo firewall, after trawling the net I get the impression that this is not a virus-based problem but a setting anomaly?

Loss Of HTTP Connectivity Going Out

Apr 10, 2009

My wife's computer is running Windows Vista. The system works fine for almost all purposes. It accesses the Internet successfully through a wireless network card to our home WiFi router. The WiFi connection is fine with a high signal strength. It's connecting to an old DLink 802.11b router using WEP encryption, which is all the router supports. Periodically, on average every few days, she will lose HTTP connectivity. This happens in both IE7 and Firefox 3.08. She can still send and receive email and still use a web browser via HTTPS, but she cannot connect to ordinary web pages on port 80. The problem normally persists until she reboots, at which time connectivity is restored. Two other computers on my home network (one Linux, one XP) are unaffected. They work fine through the same wireless network while my wife's Vista computer is not connecting...............

Loss Of Fax Capability With Home Premium

Mar 23, 2008

I have just purchased a new computer from Dell and assumed I would have some problems learning a new OS, but I did not anticipate the loss of a good applet like Microsoft Fax. I counted on this small program for occasional direct communication with other facilities fax machine. It was quick and easy.

I have a second older Dell computer which I invested with hardware updates in preparation for upgrading to Vista as well. The lack of fax capability in Vista precludes my upgading as I need one machine that can function in a more complete manner. I don't pretend to understand the rationale behind this lack in Vista but I sorely miss the function. Others have teased me about my early adoption of Vista and now I am definitely embarrassed. I sincerely hope Microsoft will reconsider this situation and perhaps at least offer a download correction to improve the functionality of this Vista suite......

Blue Screen: Loss OTA Digital Channel

Mar 23, 2008

I have Vista Home Premium. I have two Hauppauge 1600s and a Nvidia 8600GTS. I have been receiving all my local digital OTA channels just fine since getting this machine 6 months ago, and now suddenly the local CBS affiliate, channel 4.1, is gone. Just gone. Dead. I get nothing but the No TV Signal blue screen. When I go to settings and check the digital signal strength, it is totally dead. The dreaded red bar. All other channels come in at six green bars, just like 4.1 did until this past monday.

I have tried re-setting up the guide, I have tried recording one digital channel while trying to view 4.1 to check if it's just tuner 1. Both times I get the blue screen. I then took the cable out of one of the tuner cards and ran it directly into my TV and the signal comes in almost perfectly. Why is the signal suddenly gone on just one channel?

My Internet Drops & Loss Of Home Network In Vista

Mar 23, 2008

loss of Internet Connection in Vista; completely loosing my Home Network; random

Internet Lags and Drops; and it seemed the only solution was to Reboot my

Computer to get an Active Internet connection. I applied many of the

Hotfixes; and used all of the Suggestions but nothing seemed to work. The

one thing that did seem to make sense though was the Tech advice here and

their that would say it was a Hardware Issue with Routers, etc.

So this is what I did; I went out and Bought the D-Link DIR-655 which is

Certified to work with Vista. It arrived last week; hooked it up and since

then I have not had 1 Internet Drop; or have I lost my Home Network. Now my

Computer can stay on; go to sleep; and when it wakes I have an immediate

Internet Connection. On the Upside the speeds are much faster as well

instead of your basic 100mbps; im getting 300mbps. So it was well worth the

Upgrade to me. It actually made sense that to take advantage of some of the

new options with Vista Networking that you would need a New Certified Vista

Router. Im actually very glad I did it; no more headaches and reboots. Hope

this helps anyone who was going thru the same Issues I was.

Oh and by the way just so you know here is what I have going on with my

Network: My New PC; 2 Mac Books; 1 older PC; 1 Xbox; 1 PS3; and 1 Wii; and

the VOIP.

I also used to use the Hawking Booster on my Network to help with VOIP lag

and arranging packets; but I also elminate that now because this new Router

arranges the packets and no Lag on the VOIP.

Loss Of Internet Connectivity With IE And Firefox Whilst Mail Can Still Update

Sep 21, 2009

Having surveyed numerous similar posts I am at a loss as to how to resolve this issue, hence posting my specifics...all help greatly appreciated.

I am running Vista Home premium, IE8, Firefox 3.5.3, AVG free and Zonealarm. On starting the PC there is no problem connecting to the internet through either browser or updating email (Windows Mail).

Problem...

Loss of internet connection via IE and/or Firefox whilst Mail can still send/receive. I have tried clearing the cache etc but the only thing that works is re-booting the laptop (Dell XPS 1330).

I mainly browse with IE but downloaded Firefox in case IE was the problem. One or the other will lose connection first then the other will follow.

Default Vista Supplemental Drivers Would Mean Loss Of Graphics Quality Compared To Using Up To Date Drivers On A XP OS

Oct 4, 2005

While being satisfied by the cool effects and new interface of Windows Vista Codename Longhorn, many of us testers are what you would call "gamers." The lot of us would like to know if gaming on the default Vista Supplemental drivers would mean loss of graphics quality compared to using up to date drivers on a XP OS. For example, I installed Vista and then installed my trusty game, Battlefield 2. I tried using the new nvidia Vista drivers but the game kept crashing when I start it up. So I reinstalled the Vista Supplemental drivers and it happened to work. Quite interesting. I am able to run the game on default vista drivers and not the nvidia vista drivers. Coming to conclusion, would using the vista drivers result in loss of quality and graphics compared to using up to date drivers on a XP system?  Or you can also rephrase it; Would gaming be better on the Vista Beta or XP? Does anyone know if SLI works on Vista?

Post SP1 Can't See My External

Apr 5, 2008

Since I installed SP1 for Vista HP 64x I can no longer access my external hard drive/media player.

When I connect it via USB I get a message saying I need USB to IDE drivers. Windows then offers to search the internet etc but cannot find any. As a result Vista cannot see the drive and I am prevented from accessing nearly 300GB of my photos, music and movies.

This is a personal disaster. My best photographic work is on that drive.

I have had the drive for about a year and it worked perfectly before SP1. It's sold by a firm called Envizage but I believe they are just importers.

I contacted them and they replied that no drivers are required for Vista.

I was not even aware there was an IDE drive in there but I believe it is a 400GB Samsung. Can't check now obviously.
